Matt Berg founded his San Francisco-based company, Tortoise Shell, to provide
architects, designers, builders, and developers a reliable resource for today’s most
innovative, sustainable building products. He launched his business with a vision to
transform traditional construction materials and practices into the most advanced, eco-
friendly fabrication technologies. Tortoise Shell offers healthy, durable building options
that reduce waste, increase energy efficiency and feature recycled and rapidly renewable
content without sacrificing aesthetics.
Matt believes that now, more than ever, architectural design is a high-technology
endeavor– not just in electronic, appliance and lighting components--but also in the
manufacturing of structural walls, cladding systems, and high-end design finishes. While
working with high-tech companies throughout the 90’s, including Manufacturing
Engineering for Apple Computer, Matt realized the technological evolution would soon
collide with the green revolution, greatly impacting the traditionally conservative world
of architecture and building. Consumer demand for clean, progressive environments has
created tougher standards for builders and manufacturers. And, until now, these higher
standards have been tough to meet on time and on budget.
Tortoise Shell’s mission is to be the environmental/architectural (TM) liaison between
front-end producers (manufacturers, architects and builders) and end users (owners,
investors and tenants of physical structures) in the residential, hospitality and commercial
markets.
Healthy products are only one aspect of responsible building. Traditional manufacturing
facilities have huge carbon footprints that negatively impact our environment. So not
only does Tortoise Shell represent companies that produce eco-friendly products, but that
the facilities and processes used by these companies reduce emissions and waste,
