4. • Cancer Stem Cell Theory states that only small
subset of cells called cancer stem cells or
tumor initiating cells are capable of giving rise
and maintaining Tumor. (Willian L.Farrar 2009)

-we choose CSC theory as our subject of this
review because it’s a promising theory with
many potentialities to be used as a strategy of
new drugs.

8. • Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition or EMT is a process that gives cells characters of
mesenchymal phenotype so that cells can move and acquire the shape of fibroblasts. Cells in
condition of EMT have the following criteria:
1)Release of B-catenin.
2)upregulation of vimentin.(intermediate filament protein)
3)upregulation of fibronectin.( mediate cellular interactions with ECM and important for migration.)

• We used Pubmed as our database search
engine.
• Our inclusion criteria are papers written in
English, from year 2000, and published or in-
press.

• Cancer stem cells are isolated using one of the
following methods:
1)Flow cytometric sorting of side population based
on Hoechst dye 33342 (Pureblu).
2)Sorting based on cell surface markers expression.
3)Sphere culture.

20.  Conclusion and Future Potentialities
• Treatment strategies based on CSC targeting
are promising.
• Many therapeutic strategies can be
developed based on targeting signaling
pathways such as Notch and Wnt.
• Also, CSC can be used as a prognostic factor.
