Revolutions Leading Up to the
Civil War
By Mike K and David L
The American civil war in the age of
Nationalist Conflict
• Andre M. Fleche from The University of North Carolina Press Chapel Hill has
researched the revolutions around the world between 1776 and 1861. “These
wars and revolutions seemed to present different models of republican nation-
building and offer alternative definitions of what democratic revolution could
entail.” These Revolutions led up to and had a great influence on the American
Civil War. Each revolution looked at between this time was a revolution of a
government. The government change was either a change to a more democratic
government or a change from monarchy to republicanism. This change was made
by countries around the world because of America’s revolution against Britain.
This shows that America had a huge impact on the world. These revolutions also
had a great impact on America. After America had seen all the revolutions in
Europe they were further convinced that they needed to make a change. They
were not democratic enough because they still had slavery. America influenced
the governments of many nations around the world between 1776 and
1861, while those nations and their revolutions also influenced America .
• The American Revolution was the start of a wave of revolutions during the 19th
century. A painting by John Trumbull of the British surrendering shows the
American’s victory. This victory inspired other nations to revolt against their
monarchies and start republican governments. This painting begins the slideshow.
American Revolution 1776
This is a painting of the British surrendering to the United States during the American
Revolution. This marked a new era all around the world. Once other countries had seen
what the United States had accomplished by revolting against the British, the other
countries decided that they were also tired of being ruled by Monarchs and there was an
outbreak of revolts in a short time.
Map of Revolting Nations 1776-1826
This map shows the revolutions that occurred between 1776 and 1826. 1776 was the end
of the American Revolution and after this many revolutions occurred. 1826 is not the end
of the revolution era but this map still shows that many countries were revolting at this
time.
Haitian Revolution 1792
This is a painting of the Haitian Revolution which occurred in 1792. This was a slave revolt
and the painting depicts many Africans battling against the French for freedom. This
revolution along with other slave revolutions had an influence on America and their decision
to abolish slavery.
French Revolution 1789
This is a painting of the French revolution of 1789. This was a revolution of the lower
class of French people against the upper class and monarchy in France. This is a very
similar situation to America's revolution and America definitely had a influence on
France.
Poland Uprising 1830
This is a painting of the battle of Grochow which occurred during the Polish Uprising of 1830. The
polish uprising was Polishes fight for independence against the Russians. They ended up losing to
Russia but it was a revolt and the American revolution and other revolutions definitely had an
influence on Poland's decision to revolt. America was also influenced by this revolution. America saw
this fight for independence and knew they wanted to fight for the people in their country who were still
not free.
European Map 1848
This map shows the borders of European countries in 1848, the year when revolutions spread across
Europe. It also shows the boundaries of the German Confederation. The Forty-Eighters supported
unifying this territory under one democratic government. This group was a major supporter of the
European revolutions and was deeply involved with them, especially in Germany. America saw this
democratic movement and thought that they should also change to be more democratic and this lead to the
Civil War.
Carl Shurz
Carl Schurz was a member of the Forty-Eighters, a group of Europeans who supported the revolutions
throughout Europe in 1848 and wanted a unified Germany, along with more freedoms and a more
democratic German government. Forty-Eighters strongly opposed slavery. Soon after these revolutions
in Europe, The American Civil War took place and ended slavery in the U.S.
Denmark Uprising
Years before the revolutions of 1848, a movement in Denmark began leading the country in a new
direction. During the Spring of Nations in 1848, a peaceful uprising occurred in Denmark. This
uprising put an end to the absolute monarchy in Denmark, with Christian VIII as the last absolute
monarch. Then Frederick VII (above) became the first constitutional monarch. This was a
democratic change and America saw all these Democratic changes and want to also change.
Italian States Unification in 1848
The image above shows The different states in Italy before it was unified during the Spring of
Nations in 1848. During this time, part of northern Italy was ruled by the Austrian Empire. The
biggest uprising occurred in Sicily. The Italian revolution was all together a failure and many of the
Italian States’ governments went back to the way they were soon after. Once again this democratic
change affected America and made them also want to make a democratic change.
American Civil War
This image shows a battle from the American Civil war, when the Union fought the
Confederacy with the main conflict being slavery. This shows that America was impacted by
the rest of the world, because during this time, many other countries around the world were
abolishing and denouncing slavery, such as Haiti and the Forty-Eighters who were prominent in
Europe.

Revolutions Leading to the Civil War

  • 1. Revolutions Leading Up to the Civil War By Mike K and David L
  • 2. The American civil war in the age of Nationalist Conflict • Andre M. Fleche from The University of North Carolina Press Chapel Hill has researched the revolutions around the world between 1776 and 1861. “These wars and revolutions seemed to present different models of republican nation- building and offer alternative definitions of what democratic revolution could entail.” These Revolutions led up to and had a great influence on the American Civil War. Each revolution looked at between this time was a revolution of a government. The government change was either a change to a more democratic government or a change from monarchy to republicanism. This change was made by countries around the world because of America’s revolution against Britain. This shows that America had a huge impact on the world. These revolutions also had a great impact on America. After America had seen all the revolutions in Europe they were further convinced that they needed to make a change. They were not democratic enough because they still had slavery. America influenced the governments of many nations around the world between 1776 and 1861, while those nations and their revolutions also influenced America . • The American Revolution was the start of a wave of revolutions during the 19th century. A painting by John Trumbull of the British surrendering shows the American’s victory. This victory inspired other nations to revolt against their monarchies and start republican governments. This painting begins the slideshow.
  • 3. American Revolution 1776 This is a painting of the British surrendering to the United States during the American Revolution. This marked a new era all around the world. Once other countries had seen what the United States had accomplished by revolting against the British, the other countries decided that they were also tired of being ruled by Monarchs and there was an outbreak of revolts in a short time.
  • 4.
