2. GENRE
 Genre is the repetition and variation of familiar conventions but it is not just a
simple means of labelling or classifying films. Genres change over time and
hybrids emerge. Hybrids are where two or more genres collide together to create
a different type of film but just as enjoyable.
 Why is Genre important to producers?
 Genre is important to them so they can categorize their film and sell it to the right
audience. If they don't know what genre their film falls into then they can't start
the selling process When they know what genre it is they can make sure the film
follows the codes and conventions of that particular genre and make sure it is as
appealing as possible to their target audience.
 Why is Genre important to Film audience?
 Genre is important to them so they can easily identify whether they will like the
film and make the instant decision of whether going to see it or not. If the film
producer doesn’t give their film a genre then it won’t sell well to the audience as
they can’t decipher whether they will like it or not.

3. ASA
 The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the self-regulatory
organisation (SRO) of the advertising industry in the United
Kingdom. The ASA is a non-statutory organisation and so cannot
interpret or enforce legislation. However, its code of advertising
practice broadly reflects legislation in many instances. The ASA is
not funded by the British Government, but by a levy on the
advertising industry.

4. BBFC
 The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British
Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organisation,
funded by the film industry and responsible for the national
classification and censorship of films within the United Kingdom.
They give you information on the movie including Violence,
swearing and nudity. After they have watched the movie they
will label it as what age you have to be to watch the movie. If it
has too much violence it will be rated 15 and if it has sex scene
then the age rated will be 18.

5. TWO DIFFERENT FILM GENRES
(Slasher)
The first genres I am going to focus on is Slasher. A slasher film is a
sub-genre of the horror film genre typically involving a
psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims in a
graphically violent manner, often with a cutting tool such as a
chainsaw. Although the term slasher may be used as a generic
term for any horror movie involving graphic acts of murder, the
slasher as a genre has its own set of characteristics which set it
apart from related genres like the splatter film. An Example of a
slasher film are the Saw series of films and also Halloween.

6. What’s does slasher include?

 The villain in slasher films is usually physically deformed and/or mentally deranged. The
killer is almost always Male. His identity is hidden and usually by a mask, or is always
hidden by lighting or other methods. The character often is recognised easily, by
character motifs, such as Freddy Krueger by his hat and blade hands. Attempts to kill
the villain fail, any bullets or knives often miss or do not work. The killer is a serial killer
who is often strong and carries a hand held weapon like a knife, axe, chainsaw and
more. The common location in Slasher films is a suburban area, often with the main
focus on one house. Usually a quite large detached house, which looks quite normal.
The main places are small towns, abandoned buildings or farms and deep in the
forest/rural area. The locations are far from civilization where phone reception may be
bad, and the villain often cuts electric or phone lines. The only way out is a car, which
fails or the villain also destroys. Usually a female hero exists in slasher films, being the last
girl standing. She is often sensible and the less popular girl, and less attractive than her
friends who are killed. She is almost always brunette. She is often more innocent,
virginal, and sensible than her friends. She will survive to the end, where she has a
confrontation with the villain or monster and it is killed, but it can also only be deterred.
In this case, the film is left open for a sequel, where the last girl standing sees the return
of the villain. Examples; Halloween, Scream, I know what you did last summer.

7. SLASHER POSTER ANALYSIS
The tagline has an immediate effect on the audience as it does not give
clues as to who this ‘someone’ is. This is effective as it intrigues the audience
as the only way they will find out is if the go to see the film. Also, the addition
of‘rewrite’ indicates how this is a sequel as in the previous movie, the stalker
may had been revealed and now someone else has taken the role of
Scream. The title of the film continues with the theme of all its previous film
posters which makes it consistent as the audiences are familiar with the title.
The use of replacing the ‘A’ with the number ‘4’ has been effective in the
fact that it reduces the amount of text on the poster making it concise. The
‘group shot’ of the main characters have all been edited onto the poster
individually so that the camera focuses on all the characters rather than one
specific person. This is effective as now, each characters facial expressions,
body language and mise en scene can be seen. Subsequently there are two
images on one poster which makes the poster more interesting as often only
one image is the main focus of a poster. However the smooth integration of
the image on the top half of the poster contrasting and blending in with the
second image is useful as image 1 is in black and white which creates a
chiaroscuro effect on the characters’ face through light and shadow
making them look more mysterious which indicates that there is more than
meets the eye with these characters who may had been the protagonists in
the previous films.

8. TWO DIFFERENT FILM GENRES
(Sci-Fi)
 Science Fiction film is a genre that incorporates hypothetical,
science-based themes into the plot of the film. Often, this genre
incorporates futuristic elements and technologies to explore
social, political, and philosophical issues. The film itself is usually
set in the future, either on earth or in space. Traditionally, a
Science Fiction film will incorporate heroes, villains, unexplored
locations, fantastical quests, and advanced technology.

9. FAMOUS SCI-FI MOVIES
 Avatar was released on December 17th 2009 in the UK. The
media hype that surrounded Avatar was that it was meant to be
the best film of all time. Also that with all the technology used to
create Avatar it would change cinema and 3-D forever. The
audience expected Avatar to better than James Cameron’s last
film Titanic. But some critics also thought Avatar would be a flop.
Avatar is mainly science-fiction but it also has some elements of
adventure and romance. The BBFC (the British Board of Film
Classification) are the people who decide what the age rating is
for each film in Britain. Avatar was rated 12A. Avatar was rated
that younger people could watch the film too and it didn’t have
anything explicit.

10. SCI-FI POSTER ANALYSIS
The bottom of the poster he is one of the main characters in the also shows
some of where the film is film. It also shows that the humans are set, it shows
it to be quite a mystical somehow going to be joined with the world which
implies to the audience Avatars to become one and this interests that this is
set on another planet. To the audience as they will want to learn the right of
that shows the forest to more about the plot of the film. Also bybe burnt
down and destroyed this having Sam Worthington as the main implies some
kind of war is going to focus of the poster is shows that the film happen
where the mystical world is company are relying on his popularity as going
to be damaged. The title of the film is in at he action genre and the fact it is
set very futuristic metallic style in another world could appeal to font which
reinforces the idea boys as they like the idea of fighting that this film is set in
some and something involving conflict. At the bottom of the poster it says
‘A James Cameron Film’ this will and suggests that maybe this ranges as it
features a well known draw in an audience as he is a very popular film
director, this was also his actor and it has a plot that ages over planet and
its inhabitants are first film after his massive success from the film Titanic so
the audience very at one with nature.12 will be able to understand.

11. The trailer begins with some explosions in New York City. This is a sign
of what's to come. The Army has been called out to face some
deadly threat but we all know they won't have the firepower to deal
with this
We want to see the team fighting some massive enemy together. But
with the team just getting together, if they were all chummy from the
beginning, that wouldn't be much fun. Each character isn't used to
fighting with each other. They probably barely even know each
other. As you can imagine, there's going to be some butting of
heads before they all become buddies.
If the scene with Loki at the beginning does come from the beginning of
the movie, it could show the start of whatever crazy scheme he has up his
sleeve. It looks like he's going to seriously attack the soldiers but we don't
know the condition Loki is in and how exactly he arrived on Earth. It could
also be part of his plan to get captured. We later seen him being
escorted into custody as if he accepted defeat as he gives Black Widow
a smug look as he walks by.
SCI-FI MOVIE TRAILER ANALYSIS

12. The trailer begins with a normal Halloween night, kids out tick or treating
etc.There is a narrative voice leading you throughout the trailer, explaining
what is happening or what is going to happen. Flash scenes/ quick editing are
used to combined with what is happening within the trailer, in terms of a killing
scene running fast the audience don’t realize what is happening at first. The
sound effects of heartbeats make the audience want to watch the film more
because the follow on with the fast paste flash scenes. Characters: Victim:
Young girl and Villain/ deranged character/ unknown face are classed as the
main focus of the film because of there character status and views in the
trailer. There is also a slight reveal of the villain near the end of the trailer.
Flashes of the murder weapons similar to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is used
a lot in slashers because of what the film plot is trying to portray. Creepy
background voices and sounds are used to scare the audience/viewers so
they want to see what happens in the rest of the film, also the use of loud
background voices/sounds makes the film seem as it is real and you as the
audience are apart of it. there is also a terrible shunned sound which runs
throughout the trailer to create the sense of pain and suffer. Lots of different
camera angles (close- ups, extreme close-ups, wide shots etc…)+Cuts, snap
shots and shock shots, this has been used because the creators wanted to
make the trailer as exciting as well as watching the film itself. Low and dark key
lighting was used to create suspense throughout the trailer, it was also used to
make the villain less recognizable. Setting: Normal suburban home Moment of
equilibrium: Friendly town becomes deserted and a lot of people are staying in
there houses.
SLASHER TRAILER ANALYSIS
