Vast Universe of ICT (Informationand Communication Technology)
ICT(Information and Communication Technology) offers an ocean of opportunity.
One, however, needs to be patient, do one’s own study/research to be aware of
this vastuniverse. Entrepreneur mustalso identify his/her chosen area to focus
on. Any emerging entrepreneur should also realize that any window of
opportunity is transient. Nevertheless with right and sustained determination and
focus one can find success along the way.
The universeof ICTcomprises on a broad brush of hardwareand software.
Hardwaremanufacturing/assembly is generally capital intensive and it is the
domain of few big to mega corporations in the world. Within Software,
application software(or apps on mobile phones) and ITrelated services pose
greater opportunity for emerging entrepreneurs. Application Softwareabound
and one mustcreatively find a particular application area for which one wants to
providea solution. ITrelated services again have a very wide canvas and one must
choosecarefully a niche to focus on. One mustalso keep abreastof newer areas
of opportunity/activity evolving continually within the ITUniverse. Onemust be
nimble and agile and re-strategizeoften as marketshifts. Existing popular
application softwaresuch as Facebook social media softwareor SAP, a leading
ERP softwarealways offer opportunities in that improvements through add-ons to
add new features or enhance user experience are always good business
proposition. Content creation by thosesuitably qualified (knowledge, language
and expression wise) will continue to be in demand. Web analytics (analyzing web
site traffic data, marketresearch information generated fromsites), Social media
optimization (such as designing/maintaining Facebook page for corporate bodies)
are also new areas for emerging entrepreneurs. Couple of suitably qualified
friends armed with PCs, Internet and some tools can startoff an Application
Softwareor some ITServices company fromtheir own homes.
Software and ICT is taking over the world
Softwareis taking over the world and good programmers willbe the super stars
of this universe. Softwaredevelopmentand marketing companies will proliferate.
Softwarecompanies are poised to take over large swathes of the economy. Apple
in 2012 became the biggest company in the world in market valuation surpassing
Exxon Mobil followed by Microsoftand Google. More and more businesses and
industries are being run on softwareand being delivered as online services from
movies to banks to national defense. Softwarehas matured over years and now
can be said to work after four decades since the invention of the microprocessor
and two decades into the rise of internet. More and moredisruptions of
traditional industry by softwarewill happen in the coming days. Borders, a
traditional mega book store(started by two brothers in 1971 in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, USA) filed for bankruptcy whileAmazon.com, an online BVM (books,
video and music) outlet to start with (founded about20 years later in 1994 by Jeff
Bezos in Seattle, Washington, USA) grows fromstrength to strength. Amazon.com
sells everything online and has ‘Kindle’ digital book replacing physicalbooks.
Books are now softwaretoo. Amazon.comcontinues to threaten Barnes & Noble,
a Fortune 500 company and the largest retail bookseller in US. The underlying
theme in all aboveis Amazon.com and such company’s ability to remain agile and
improvecustomer experience almost on a day to day basis. Customers will expect
nothing less and ruthlessly reject slow movers. Thus for mostcompanies failure to
acquire digital agility will become an existential threat. Acquiring digital agility
through heightened useof Softwareand ICTis thus a strategic necessity. Here lies
rainbow of opportunity for emerging ICTentrepreneurs.
Barriers toentry are lowand getting lower but barrier tosuccess is still high
Itis generally true that setting up to be an ICT/ Softwareentrepreneur is easy.
Development tools are mostly free. Sales and Marketing tools, customer support
tools, social media management tools and tools in almostall product category are
free or next to free. One can turn to blogs, mentoring programs, meet-ups and
other educational opportunities that did not quite exist in pre internet days. One
can ask ‘StackOverflow’ if one has a technical question. But expectations from
customers areset by likes of Apple, Facebook, Google. Unfortunately customers
expect the same from even the small startups. Thus while entry barriers may be
low success is for those with most determination and focus.
Bangladesh perspectives
Bangladesh is a fertile place for emerging entrepreneurs in Softwareand ICTfield
in general. There are already estimated 250,000 technicalpeople working in this
sector. BASIS (Bangladesh Association of Softwareand Information Services)
formed in 1997 with 17 charter members in Softwareand ITES industry (author is
one of the founder charter members) now has over 800 members. There are also
over 60,000 freelancers providing allkinds of ITand non ITrelated services using
freelancing websites. These individual freelancers havealso banded together to
formICTcompanies. BASIS member companies are involved amongstothers in
SoftwareDevelopment, Web Application Development, Web Site designing and
maintenance, E Commerce, Content Development, Graphics Design, 3D
Animation, Games development, Mobile Apps development and ICTTraining.
ICTindustry in Bangladesh has grown over 20-30% consistently in recent years.
Favourabledemographic and macro economic trends, high growth rate and a
relatively liberal investment climate has convinced Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan
to identify Bangladesh as one of the mostattractive emerging economies. World
Bank funded LICT(Leveraging ICTfor growth, employment and Governance)
projectof BCC (Bangladesh Computer Council) under ICTdivision launched in
early 2014 aims to train 34000 male(70%) and female (30%) graduates. Training
will be for 10,000 graduates in Top up ITspecialized training, for 20,000 graduates
in ITES Foundation training and for 4000 graduates in FTFL (FastTrack Future
Leaders) (3 months training course) for employment in IT/ITES industry. SME
loans for Softwareand ITCompanies, introducing PayPalin Bangladesh, increasing
limit of money repatriation for Softwarecompanies, abolition of obstacles in
softwareimportare some of the areas where Bangladesh Bank are working.
Fenox Venture Capital has already invested in Bangladesh. Moreover, AB Kinnevik
of Switzerland, SNTClassified, Rocket Internetof Norway and many other
renowned companies of the world haveinvested in the ICTsector of Bangladesh.
One of the world’s largest Online PaymentGateway Service(OPG) providers
‘Payoneer Inc., USA’ haveopened shop in Bangladesh. This has been a relief for
growing freelancers in Bangladesh earning and bringing lot of foreign currencies
into the country.
Aboveare indicative of a Bangladesh that should be brimming with activities in
Softwarean ICTfield in the coming days. Theseare signs of opportunities
knocking for emerging Softwareand ICTentrepreneurs in Bangladesh. They must
go and grab them, and in the process do themselves and the country proud.
