Doctrine is of paramount importance. Sound doctrine delivers us whereas unsound doctrine destroys. Join us as we look at the importance of sound doctrine as it relates specifically to the Reformation and the Church of Rome.
1. Doctrine: Deliverance or Destruction?
1 Timothy 4:13-16
13 Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to
exhortation and teaching. Do not neglect the spiritual gift within
you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with
the laying on of hands by the presbytery. 15 Take pains with these
things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident
to all. 16 Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching;
persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure
salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.
Teaching (διδασκαλίᾳ - didaskalia or didache)
Doctrine
2. Doctrine: Deliverance or Destruction?
1 Timothy 4:13-16
• Salvation is fundamentally a work of deliverance –
Psalm 144:2; Rom. 6:17-18
• Sound doctrine delivers. False doctrine destroys.
And this I pray that your love would abound still more and more in
real knowledge and all discernment
Philippians 1:9
3. One can have sound doctrine and live an ungodly life, but it is not
possible to live a godly life with unsound doctrine.
Truth:
4. 14 Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the
presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and
leads to the ruin of the hearers. 15 Be diligent to present yourself
approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,
accurately handling the word of truth. 16 But avoid worldly and empty
chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, 17 and their talk will
spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,
18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the
resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of
some.

8. Council of Trent

If anyone saith that the justification
received is not preserved and also

justification obtained, but not a
cause of the increase thereof, let
him be anathema

Christ’s sake; or that this confidence
alone is whereby we are justified, let
him be anathema. - Canon 12

the Mass.”
12. Sacrifice of the Mass
The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice
of the Holy Eucharist are one single
sacrifice. The victim is one and the
same: the same now offers through the
ministry of the priests, who then offered
himself on the cross; only the manner
of offering is different. …This sacrifice
is truly propitiatory.
- Catholic Catechism, paragraph 1367

22. What Now?
We do not hate Roman Catholics.
We do hate Roman Catholicism
We must love Roman Catholics enough to tell
them the Truth.
Romans 1:16
Public reading of Scripture – central part of synagogue worship; Jesus did in Luke 4 (Isaiah 61); early church did this & added Apostolic teaching
Exhortation – challenge to obey what is taught. Not to be hearers but doers per James 1:22
Do not neglect
Be in them – if you are growing in Christ you don’t have to advertise it. If you are a believer you don’t shouldn’t need a T-Shirt so others will know you are
Pay close attention – take heed. Take heed to 2 things:
Himself – life; holy conduct; Timothy to be set apart, above reproach, unstained by the world
Teaching (doctrine) – body of teaching that is authoritative; Jesus taught with authority. Originates from Creator – it is true, it saves. It delivers
Psalm 144:2 – Lord is my deliverer.
Rom. 6:17-18 speak of being obedient to doctrine and being freed from sin
Rich man in Luke 16; Judas; many evangelical celebrities today

Ruin – katastrophe. Same word used to describe what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah. God ordains not only the ends but the means to the ends
Ungodliness – worldy and empty chatter not chitchat. Heresy. Unsound doctrine has no power to restrain evil behavior.
Gangrene – Mark it.

Colt 45
Rom. 3:28 – for we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law
Rom. 5:1 – Therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ
Um, yeah! That is the definition of faith.
1 Tim. 2:5 – For there is on God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus
Immaculate conception, sinless (despite her own words in Luke 1 – my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior), assumption into Heaven like Christ
Victim – No!! That is a different Jesus, dear friends.
Purgatory!
Rom. 3:28 – for e maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law
Rom. 5:1 – Therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

Hebrews 7:23-25 23The [former] priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
1 and 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Baruch, Prayer of Manasseh, etc.
Jon Huss – Czech priest who challenged RCC and popes. Indulgences. First Reformer. Arrested by RCC. Given multiple opportunities to recant. Last words were, “Lord Jesus, it is for thee that I patiently endure this cruel death. I pray Thee to have mercy on my enemies.” Recited Psalms as he burned.
Tyndale – Strangled while tied to stake for translating Bible into English. Then burned“Lord, open the eyes of the King of England!”
Hugh Latimer – Began as RCC. Fierce defender of Rome and Papacy but converted in 1520. Began preaching true Gospel. Bruend at stake with Nicholas Ridley. Last words, “Play the man, Master Ridley. We shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England as I trust shall never be put out.”

We must hate what Jesus hates.
Roman Catholicism is spiritual bondage
Once saved, will not stay in it.
