Conversion, School of Marine Science and Technology, University of
Newcastle
Professor Bruce has 30 years industrial experience in shipbuilding including
more recent roles in facilities development and marine technology
research. He has consulted and delivered project management training
for shipbuilders, ship repair and marine companies across the UK, Spain,
Portugal, Italy, Greece, Abu Dhabi and Oman. George was previously
involved in three major EU funded projects in support of the ship repair
industry where he worked on developing and transferring new technology
into their operations. He was formerly Manager of Policy and Standards
Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand and
recently retired from teaching shipyard production and management at the
School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle University.
Introduction to Ship Design and Naval Architecture
About the Course
Ship design is a complicated process involving the multiple input
requirements from many other professionals. This includes navigating
and engineering officers, managers, charterers, superintendents,
surveyors, owners, operations staff and even passengers all having
different requirements, which often clash with each other and yet
being intrinsically linked.
This 2 day course is intended to provide interested parties with an
overview of the fundamentals of naval architecture, to help them
develop a better understanding of the science of ship design, and
therefore their influence on the design and operation of ships.
The course will consider key aspects in ship design, such as ship
stability and hydrostatistics, hull structures, durability, powering
and machinery requirements as well as expected resistances when
operating in the marine environment. Finally, these key areas will be
integrated together within the typical design process used to develop

He has consulted and delivered project management training for shipbuilders, ship repair and marine companies across the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Abu Dhabi and Oman. George was previously involved in three major EU funded projects in support of the ship repair industry where he worked on developing and transferring new technology into their operations. He was formerly Manager of Policy and Standards Development with the Maritime Safety Authority of New Zealand and recently retired from teaching shipyard production and management at the School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle University.
  • 2. Introduction to Ship Design and Naval Architecture About the Course Ship design is a complicated process involving the multiple input requirements from many other professionals. This includes navigating and engineering officers, managers, charterers, superintendents, surveyors, owners, operations staff and even passengers all having different requirements, which often clash with each other and yet being intrinsically linked. This 2 day course is intended to provide interested parties with an overview of the fundamentals of naval architecture, to help them develop a better understanding of the science of ship design, and therefore their influence on the design and operation of ships. The course will consider key aspects in ship design, such as ship stability and hydrostatistics, hull structures, durability, powering and machinery requirements as well as expected resistances when operating in the marine environment. Finally, these key areas will be integrated together within the typical design process used to develop What Past Delegates Liked About Our Maritime Courses About the Course Director the design of a ship. Professor George James Bruce, Retired Professor of Ship Repair and Conversion, School of Marine Science and Technology, University of Newcastle George recently retired as Professor of Ship Repair and Conversion at Newcastle University, where he taught shipyard production and management. He continues to be active in teaching, presenting an MSc module in Marine Project Management in the UK and Singapore. He is also Director of Incremental Limited, a company providing management information software and consultancy for ship repair and ship construction companies. He has recently provided project management training in Oman, Greece and Curacao, and advice on shipyard developments in the UK, and also in Abu Dhabi and Greece. While at Newcastle University, he led or participated in three major EU funded projects in support of the ship repair industry, SYRIOS – to develop computer based management Information Systems, INTERMAR – to explore and understand the ship repair supply chain and develop e-commerce tools and SHIPMATES – to develop novel technologies for ship repair. He has carried out a number of projects with SMEs in the marine and other sectors to transfer new technology into the operations of the companies. He has worked with small and large shipbuilding and repair companies in UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. George previously advised companies, local and national governments on the development of shipbuilding and repair facilities. He has worked in over forty countries, is a past member of the ship repair working group of European Shipbuilders (CESA) and a past member of the management council of the Shipbuilders and Shiprepairers Association. He was previously technical director at A & P Appledore, a leading marine consultancy in the 1980s. He also worked for British Shipbuilders after training and early career at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders. At Swan Hunter he specialised in ship production and played a major role in the development of new facilities at Wallsend and Hebburn Shipyards on the River Tyne. George trained as a naval architect and also holds an MBA. IBC Training Academy Upcoming Training Courses!
