2. Introduction
• Work-life balance is a term used
for the idea that you need time for
both work and other aspects of
life, whether those are family-
related or personal interests. The
saying goes that ‘all work and no
play makes Jack a dull boy’.
• But work, or at least some kind of
contributory effort, whether paid
or voluntary, is often recognized
as being important for personal
satisfaction, so it seems likely that
‘all play’ would be dull too.

3. Research Says:
• Recent research says that more than 60%
respondents are not able to find a balance
between their personal and professional life.
• Traditional thinking leading to more stress and
lack of concentration in work, hence leading to
greater absenteeism and increase in attrition
rate.
• Activities and social spaces are becoming
ambiguous.

4. The Origin of the Idea of ‘Work-
Life Balance’
• “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had
made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work
which he had made.” Genesis 2:2
• In the 1800s, during and following the industrial revolution,
industrialists and unions alike agreed that workers needed a
day off. This later became a two-day ‘weekend’. But in those
days, ‘work’ was mostly manual, and once workers left the
site, they also left their work behind. They were genuinely able
to rest, away from work, without having to think about it or
worry about what might be going on in their absence.
