❖ Cadenas served as the presiding magistrate of Chiapas Judiciary. A lawyer by
profession, has served as federal deputy and senator on two occasions,iv
but under the
PRD. During his time in PRD, he also assumed various internal positions, as secretary
general in Chiapas, coordinator, as well as a representative.v
❖ In July 2021, Chiapas will hold state elections for the following positions; State Deputies
and Municipal Councils (City Councils).
❖ Chiapas has an agricultural economy. It is strong in production and exportation of crops
ranging from coffee and honey, to flowers and plantains.
❖ Chiapas also has a growing livestock sector and is a leading producer of milk in Mexico.
❖ Access to the sea through the port at Puerto Chiapas helps Mexican exporters avoid up to
seven border crossing through Central America on their way to the Panama Canal.
❖ Chiapas is home to one-third of Mexico’s biodiversity.
❖ Chiapas has the 5th lowest rate of FDI in Mexico ($108 million in 2016).vi
❖ Chiapas has the lowest household income in Mexico (MEX$93,024/year or $5,200),
almost a fourth of the highest (Nuevo Leon).vii
❖ Chiapas is the most diverse state in religions, with over 400 religions (including
indigenous) and only 58 percent rate of Catholicism.
❖ Tourism has significantly increased since the 1994 Zapatista rebellion drew international
attention. Tuxtla is a staid government town, but San Cristobal de las Casas is a popular
jumping-off point for ecotourism, with ever more restaurants, boutique hotels, and lovely
cafes and chocolate shops.
