Joscelyn Harris

2. About Me
My name is Joscelyn Harris and I am a first year LPN
Nursing student attending Selkirk College. I graduated
from Ryerson University in 2005 with a bachelor in
applied science food and nutrition. I then took a leap
and decided to run my own business. I ran a food truck
for 11 years in Nelson B.C.. The concept of the food
truck was “healthy gourmet fast food”. The experience
taught me a great deal of work ethic and gave me skills
to manage and implement creative ideas. My desire to
care for others inspired me to go back to school. I have
been working in the healthcare field since 2018 as a
Health Care Assistant in acute and long-term care . I am
currently attending Selkirk College to obtain my
certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Values and
Beliefs
Nursing is not simply caring for the ill it is promoting health
and healing. I believe everyone regardless of race, religion,
culture, gender or socioeconomic background deserve equal
rights to safe and effective healthcare service. As nurses we
have the responsibility to not only assist in the healing
process but foster the skills for clients to continue their
journey of health in their own environment. Working in
healthcare is a job that holds a great deal of responsibility
because people put their trust in us to provide the most
optimal care. Professionalism and ethical decision making is
integral to form trust in clients. Nurses play a vital role in the
quality of treatment and should self assess personal biases
and judgements at all times. I truly believe you should treat
others how you would like to be treated and there is value in
altruism. Selflessness has value but you cannot take care of
others unless you take care of yourself. Self care and allowing
your self concept to grow will foster relationships in your life
personally and professionally. Caring, compassionate and
empathetic characteristics are integral in the nursing field.
Focusing on the patients quality of life and having a holistic
patient-centered care approach are core values to possess. I
feel learning is a lifelong journey, education not only allows
for personal development but will hone your skills as a nurse.
