The iron-carbon diagram predicts different solidification paths, depending on carbon content. Primary phase formed; transformations during solidification; and in solid state vary. This implies that each steel type is sensible to specific quality problems. So, we have steels which tend to show inner porosity, cracking, blown grain, rhomboidity or central segregation / porosity. In this presentation, the relationships between the solidification and the aforementioned defects are discussed for several steel grades.
