• Benefits - What are the reasons one might consider this kind of
publishing agreement?

– Cuts - songs recorded by other artists
– Developmental Deal - an agreement whereby money
is spent towards the growth of a young and promising
artist
– Draw - monthly revenue paid to artists by a publisher
– Intellectual Property (IP) - a work or invention (such
as an idea, song, invention, or process) that comes
from a person’s mind; the rights of a person who has
thought of or invented something that other people
want to use, profit from, etc.

– Mechanicals - revenues generated from both physical
and digital copies
– Performance - revenue generated from airplay
through terrestrial radio and at conventional business
locations
– Performance Rights Organization (PRO) - an entity
that collects copy- right performance revenues on
behalf of a songwriter and publishers
– Plugger - a company whose role is to promote a song
catalog in order to better monetize it

– Recoupable - a type of payment that reimburses an
initial advance; basically a loan
– SoundExchange - a digital performance rights
organization primarily responsible for collecting and
distributing streaming revenues
– Split - a percentage of ownership in which the creating

SoundExchange for music played on services such as
Spotify, Apple Music, and Pandora

level, (e.g., a larger label), often facilitated by a
publisher, producer, or manager

service provider that is owned by the hiring entity; all
creative ownership retained by the hiring entity
