Personal Profile
I am a committed and passionate media and communication specialist with
background in education, communication, peace building and development work. I
graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree; second upper Class honours and a
Masters of Arts degree in Communication Studies from the University of Nairobi.
I have a host of other post-graduate trainings in Monitoring and Evaluation,
Advocacy, Translation, Gender, Emergency Response Preparedness and Conflict and
Peace Building. I have undertaken skills development in online communications,
photography and video editing as well as social media and networking in recent
times. I desire to make a meaningful contribution to the communities through media
campaigns, developmental communication and engagements with women, girls and
community members at large.
I am fluent in spoken and written English and Kiswahili languages and have
undertaken consultancy work in Translation: English to Kiswahili and vice versa. I am
an experienced writer and a columnist in one of the local dailies in Kenya; writing on
topical issues particularly on Gender, Devolution, Democracy, Governance, Peace
building and Conflict Management. I’m technically proficient and experienced in Ms.
Office Suite with skills in media and design software’s.
Background Information
John Harrington Ndeta is seasoned media and communications professional with
extensive experience in managing media components in donor-funded programs. For
the past 8 years, he has worked in East Africa with visits in Europe due to his work
on media, gender, training and capacity building as well as peace building and conflict
management programs. John has a proven track record in implementation of donor
funded projects and he is currently the Media and Peace Coordinator for the
International Rescue Committee’s Peace Initiative Kenya project. The USAID funded
Peace Initiative Kenya Project was designed to address gender based violence before
and after the 2013 general elections and under his guidance, exceeded its targets by
effectively reaching to Kenyans through a highly visible media campaign that he
spearhead under a consortium of over eight peace, gender and media organizations.
Key components he has been involved in include documentation of peace building
activities, media campaigns, community development, advocacy, and good
governance. From peace building to media specific programs, John has over the years

2. demonstrated management flexibility and broad knowledge by leading numerous,
successful donor-funded programs.
Through this project, he has attained significant, cross-cultural experience in building
constructive and strategic relationships with national and local government
authorities, UN agencies, local and international NGOs and community-based
organizations.
Professional Experience
Peace & Media Coordinator for Peace Initiative Kenya, International
Rescue Committee (2012 to 2014)
In the last two years, I worked under a USAID funded Peace Initiative Kenya project
under a consortium of organisations working for peace and eradication of gender
based violence in Kenya led by the International Rescue Committee. In the above
position, I over saw an elaborate media campaign designed to change attitudes and
perceptions towards gender based violence and ethnic and tribal violence.
To this extend the project made huge successes delivering largely a violence free
election in March 2013 and now have narrowed down to gender based violence in
the larger Kenyan society.
Knowledge Management Officer, PeaceNet Kenya, Nairobi (2011 – 2012)
I was charged with coordination and media documentation work for the 5 programs
under implementation by PeaceNet Kenya. These programs include: Kenya Tuna
Uwezo (USAID), Sikika Hasa Campaign (European Union), Active Citizens (British
Council) Sauti Mashinani (GIZ) and Towards Peaceful and Secure Election (DfID),
and Global round 7 HIV/Aids program (Care International).
For all the above projects, he has produced success stories which are published on
PeaceNet Kenya website and a host of journals, produced documentaries and taken
photographs instrumental in development of project reports.
Current program portfolio provides support to all PeaceNet Kenya projects which
cut across capacity building for community-based organizations, coordination of
peace actors, early warning early response, policy advocacy and HIV/Aids. Oversees
on average 7 staff working under the Knowledge Management Portfolio at PeaceNet
Kenya and coordinates over 11 Regional coordinators across the Country.
Information Officer, PeaceNet Kenya, Nairobi (2009 – 2011)
Upon joining PeaceNet, I worked alongside other program officers to implement
multi-million dollar portfolio of USAID, US State Department, DFID, EU and
Netherlands Government-funded programs focused on post-conflict development
issues of IDPs, returnees and reintegration; civil society growth; and community
development.
In late 2009 and early 2010, I managed DFID funded project through Oxfam GB
aimed at monitoring vernacular radio stations with a sense of instilling conflict
sensitivity in radio programming.
The net product was a media monitoring booklet titled “Nurturing Nationhood
through Peace Media” published in April 2010.
Later in the same year, 2010, I was tasked to oversee the media component under
Uwiano Platform for Peace program; a multi-stakeholders coalition that brought

3. together Government, Independent Commissions, UN Agency and Civil Society
Organizations to forestall violence during the 2010 constitutional referendum. Under
this, produced media messages, and served as a media liaison person for the Uwiano
campaign.
Lecturer, East African School of Journalism, Nairobi (2008 – 2010)
In 2009, I was part of the dream team that revamped the East African School of
Journalism in 2009 when the college affiliated to the University of Nairobi. I lectured
Media law and ethics; News and Feature Writing and Developmental Journalism
Editor, Kenya Times, Nairobi (2006 – 2009)
Edited articles and photos and laid pages for the daily papers. I rose through the
ranks to become the Chief Sub-editor for the Sunday Times Newspaper.
Wrote numerous opinion pieces, editorials and feature stories on topical issues
including; peace, education and governance.
