2. Process
To create the illusion of the square flashing
and moving, I created two layers on
Photoshop, both with the exact same
squares, one red, one black. I then added
new layers to the timeline and made it so
every other layer flashed red (the other one
flashing black). This created the flashing
illusion.
After creating this illusion, I started to
move one square two spaces, then
moving the other square 4 spaces,
making it look like it was moving and
flashing simultaneously. I did the same
thing with the downwards movements.
This made it look as if it was moving.
3. Process
To create this neon stacking of rectangles I made a
rectangle, then duplicated the layers and changed the
colours. I then angled each layer differently to give a
circle shape. I split them into two ‘motions’, the first
motion was the first time that a full circle was done by
the rectangles, and the second was the start of the
second circle.
This animation was quite easy to make,
because every other timeline layer, I would
turn off the layer with the rectangle before,
to give a stacking effect.
Due to the different colours, the rectangles look like it is
flashing in a circle
4. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
– I probably won’t use many elements from this
experiment, as I was just getting to know the
system/ software. This helped me be able to
expand my experiments and make them look
better, and allow me to explore more to develop
my skills for my final project.
5. Process
• I want to include a scroll screen
background in my final
animation, so I created a short
sequence, using the scroll
background with a simple switch
between the characters stance to
create a walking illusion.
I made the background the same
height as the other experiments and
the page that I created my
characters on. However, I made the
length 10 times as big as the page
length, meaning I could easily tween
it by adding a new layer in the
timeline then moving the
background to the end of the scroll.
I added 20 slides, to make the scroll
slower, to make the character
walking more natural.
To make the character look as if it was moving, I
had to create a walking character look and a
standing character look, this meant that the
walking sequence looked more natural and all-
round improved the look of the game itself. To
do this, I added a new layer in the timeline, and
alternated turning off the character layers of the
walking and standing every other timeline layer
to give the walking effect.
6. To create the sound to go with my animation, I
wanted to create a sound which would be similar
o the sound I would use in my final product. I
want to create a traditional Chinese themed
animation, so I used instruments like Harmonicas,
ukulele, drum synths and a pipe organs. In my
final product, I will use a koto sound, which is a
traditional Chinese instrument.
I used a stacking formation,
because it made a rising sound,
which looped well with the other
sounds.
This formation made the drum
sound strong on every other
beat, making it sound rising.
This beat didn’t have a
specific structure,
because, as I found, it
sounded best stacked
with sections in different
octaves, but still having
the climbing sounds.
A similar thing happened to the
structure of the pipe organ, I
found that I sounded best with
different structures and levels
included.
7. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
I added small details to the background – the jail cell and the cracked wall with fire
inside, to show some potential details to include with my final product. It also makes
the animation look more like a pixel game. In the final product, I will cut to other
backgrounds to give a ‘level’ aspect – similar to Mario games.
I like the scroll background and the character walking, as it looks natural. I think the
pixel art works best with games like these because it doesn't look too over animated or
too complicated.
I will use the scroll background in my final product as I like games that have this kind of
aesthetic and want to create , my own version. I also find it easy to create.
I will also use the same style that I used for my audio, because it will make my game
sound more authentic to its theme.
