Misleading icons
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
“
I am afraid it’ll post my photo to
social media directly.
“
12. Misleading icons
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• The front/rear camera switch button looks like “Refresh”
• Misuse of the “Filter shuffle” icon for “camera switch”
• The “Star” icon at the upper left corner on the homepage leads to ads (removed in
current version)
• The “Ruler” icon for the “Stretch” feature is confusing for some users
13. Confusing features
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• The outcome between “Firm" and “Smooth” is not distinguishable
• The difference between “Resize" and “Reshape” is not noticeable
• Problem with finding the “B|A” button
• Misuse of the “B|A” button for brightness
• The method for using the “B|A” button is not understandable
• The method for removing acne is not intuitive
• The adjustment between "on” and “off" in “Beauty magic” is not obvious
14. Logo
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• Unable to identify the branding through the logo – participants have problems
understanding that the product is a photo editing application
15. Annoying settings
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• Default filter effect is set to “Noir”
• Default make up effect is “Freckle”
• Tutorials pop up too often
• Review is asked too soon
• No free trial for the paid features – participants are frustrated without trying and
saving the “Firm” feature
16. Malfunctions
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• No change of orientation is allowed on iOS - camera doesn’t recognize the face
while the camera is upside down
• Rear camera is unstable on the filter screen and jumps back to the landing (Camera
& Library) screen while taking picture
• All buttons on Share screen on Android platform are broken
17. Save & Share
FIVE MAIN PAIN POINTS
Can I easily access to the
photo I just took, instead
of going back to the
library?
Will my photo be directly
posted on social media if
I click the “upload” icon?
Is the filter the only
thing I can do with this
app? I don’t know
there are “retouch”
and “makeup”.
Is the photo saved
or not after I took it?
Where to find the
photo I just took?
18. Suggestions
PROBLEMS FOUND during usability testing
• Flow: Simplify the flow of “Save” and “Edit”
• Save: Improve the transparency of saving photo
• Edit: Immediately launch all editing options after saving
• Album: Provide easy access to the photo album within the app
• Share: Enhance the progress to encourage sharing photos
Further advices for a friendlier experience:
• Icon buttons: Refine the icons, i.e. front/rear camera, filter shuffle, and stretch, etc.
• Feature description: Improve the readability of each feature in addition to the icon
• Standardized term: Use the name/title to match the local device to eliminate confusion, e.g. rename “Library”
as “Album” on iOS
• Feature outcome: Display a more noticeable result by enabling the default settings
• Free trial: Allow saving photo as in the paid features
• Tutorials: One-click skip/resume tutorials/demos when needed
19. The test findings illustrate that the most
significant problem is with the flow of saving
and continuing editing after taking a picture
as well as sharing photos.
Users need to easily find and edit the photos
they just took. Currently they are confused about
whether their photos are saved or not, where to
find them, and how to navigate amongst all the
features in the app.
In addition, possible ways of extending the
time spent (stickiness) and increasing the
exposure are our focuses, as requested by
AirBrush.
PROBLEM
STATEMENT
20. GOALS &
OBJECTIVES
Redesign the processes of saving and sharing
photo to increase ease-of-use:
• Improve the transparency of saving photo
• Increase the stickiness (by facilitating the
start of a new flow - capture or edit the next
photo)
• Encourage sharing photos on social media
22. Goal 1: Improve the transparency of saving photo
Version 3.3
• The three icon buttons at
upper right corner are not
noticeable
• Way to skip the filter feature,
i.e. Vignette, is not clear
Proposal 1.1
a. Simplify the UI of the camera
screen: All camera features
are grouped in one row with
descriptions to make room for
the album indicator, and
shutter.
b. Saved photo: Photo should
be immediately displayed in a
small album indicator after
taking - to improve the
transparency of the saving,
and to eliminate unnecessary
navigation to the local photo
album.a
b
23. Version 3.3
The Save and Close buttons are
not noticeable on a light-colored
background.
Proposal 1.2
Enhance the noticeability of the
“Save” button by adding a bright
button color
24. Version 3.3
Saving each step of the
changes is missing prior to
directing to the Save and Share
screen.
Proposal 1.3
A “Check” button is needed
while proceeding to the next
step, which confirms all changes
have been applied.
25. Version 3.3
Home and Setting buttons are
too close, It is unnecessary to
have both of them here.
Proposal 1.4
a. Photo is clearly shown as
saved
b. The “Settings” button can be
omitted, and the “Home”
button remains on the “Save”
& “Share” screen to allow
restarting.
b
26. Version 3.3
Users have difficulty to
understand the bottom area
filled with so many camera
settings.
Proposal 2.1
All camera settings are displayed in an individual screen. Original options, for
example, frame, flash, timer, etc., are hidden while not needed. The “Shuffle”
button can be omitted.
27. Version 3.3
Immediately launch the editing
screen once the photo is taken
Proposal 2.2
Allowing “Retake”, or “Save” a
photo before moving onto the
next step.
29. Current version
In the current and V3.3 version, the information about next step is
not clearly enough.
Goal 2: Increase the stickiness
Proposal 1
Reorganize the layout -
follow with “Continue,”
and “Share” once the
photo is saved.
Users are guided to
either a) Share the
modified photo, or b)
Edit more photo.
Version 3.3
a
b
30. Proposal 2
Add the function to “select multiple
photos to edit”.
This function actually can both
facilitate the start of a new flow (edit
multiple photos one after one), and
also encourages sharing.
用户情景:

修的那张。而且她很完美主义,希望每次发到社交软
件的组图都是统一滤镜的,这样才能保持色调和风格

了第一张的滤镜的名称。
32. Task 3: Encourage sharing photos on social media
Proposal 1
“Share” is re-ordered
above the “Camera”
and “Library” options
and is apart from the
advertisement
Version 3.3
The “Share’ options are so
close to the advertisement and
are like part of it.
Current version
33. Proposal 2
Viewing a full-width
final image is preferable
prior to sharing it with
others.
Current version Version 3.3
A small round image indicates
that all changes have been
saved. Users will decide to
a) Return to Home;
b) Continue more editing;
c) Share the edited photo
b
c
a
34. Proposal 3A
We want to encourage users to select preferred photos (single or multiple) and sharing them
on social media, or by email, or chat app, etc. while on the AirBrush platform.
35. Proposal 3B
If proposal 3A and/or 3B is adopted, note that sending multiple images via email, or chat apps will avoid
the limitations offered by some social media platforms (as they restrict the number of simultaneous
uploaded pictures.) AirBrush technical support may need to cover that function.
37. Task Flow of V.3.3.1
The proposed task flow is revised based on the
version 3.3 given to us.
• Improving task flow: The editing screen is
immediately launched once the photo is taken and
saved to the album – eliminating unnecessary steps
and confusion
• Increasing stickiness and encouraging sharing:
An additional in-app “Multiple Share” option allows
sending/sharing more than one photo at a time.
38. Prototype
a. Proposed “Indicator” at the bottom left corner - The saved photo will be immediately displayed here, and also serves as an Album shortcut
b. The task flow of v.3.3.1 forces the launch of the editing screen once the photo is taken
c. Three different versions of the “Save and Share” screen are proposed and will be tested
d. The default settings of all the features should be turned on to better measure outcomes

39. Usability Test and Takeaways
The Save and Share screen with a full-width background image was well received in the first prototype. A revised layout with the
proposed solution from AirBrush is composed of three different arrangements for Edit, Save, and Share, and were further tested.
Version 3 is recommended. The user has a choice between 1) “Share”, which directs him/her to more options; or 2) “Restart”
button to edit a new photo. (We suggest to replace “Next” with “Restart,” an action button.)
