Reading for
Appreciation and
Enjoyment
 Heighten awareness of three structure of literature selections
 Enhance appreciation of stylistic options
 Compare different interpretative strategies
Let’s get the most out
of literature
• Reading literary selections, be they
poems, short stories, novels, plays, or
essays, not only provide pleasures.
To understand a poem, ask
yourself the following questions:
1. Who is the author of the poem? What is the
purpose of the author?
2. What is the title of the poem? Is it related to
the subject and theme of the poem?
3. What is the genre of the poem?
To understand a poem, ask
yourself the following questions:
4. What is the format of the poem? Haiku?,
Tanka?, Cinquain? Or a Diamante?
5. Does the poem use sound devices? Is the
poem in free verse or in some regular meter?
6. Does the poem contain images that appeal to
different senses?
7. Does the poem contain figures of speech? Do
they help projecting tone and in conveying
the theme?
8. What is the setting of the poem? How is it
related to the mood of the poem?
9. What is the theme of the poem?
To understand a poem, ask
yourself the following questions:
10.Can you infer about the speaker? If so, what
is it?
11.What is the plot of the poem, if it is a
narrative or dramatic poem?
12.What can you infer about the characters or
about the relationships of the characters of
the poem, if it is a narrative or dramatic
poem?
To understand a poem, ask
yourself the following questions:
Literature
• Related to the feeling of people whether
it is true or just a product of their
imagination.
Kinds:
Prose
Poetry
Different Kinds Of Prose
Prose (non-metrical)
 is a form of language that exhibits
a grammatical structure and a natural flow of
speech, rather than a rhythmic structure as in
traditional poetry. Where the common unit
of verse is based on meter or rhyme, the
common unit of prose is purely grammatical,
such as a sentence or paragraph
Examples of Prose
a.) Novels
- a long narrative divided into chapters and
events are taken from true to life stories.
Example:
Harry Potter
(J.K. Rowling)
b.) Short Story
- this is a narrative involving one or more
characters, one plot and one single impression.

animals and inanimate things who speak and act
like people and their purpose is to enlighten the
minds of children to events that can mold their
ways and attitudes.
Example:
The Monkey And The Turtle
f.) Anecdotes
- these are merely products of the writers
imagination and the main aim is to bring out
lessons to the readers.
Example:
The Moth And The Lamp
(Jose Rizal)
g.) Essay
-This expresses the view point or opinion of the
writer about a particular problem or event.
The best example of this is the editorial
page of a news paper.
h.) Biography
-This deals with the life of a person which
maybe about himself, his autobiography or that
of other.
Example:
Cayetano arellano
Socorro O. Albert
i.) News
-This is a report of everyday events in society,
government, science, and industry, and accidents
happening nationally or not.
j.) Oration
-This is a formal treatment of a subject and
intended to be spoken in public.
It appeals to the intellect, to the will or to the
emotions of the audience
Different Kinds Of

of both speech and song that is nearly always
rhythmical, usually metaphorical, and often

Lyric Poem
Expresses the observations and feeling of
a single speaker
Examples:
Folk songs (awiting bayan)
Songs
Psalms (dalit)
Narrative Poems
Are stories told in prose. Often narrative
poems, even ballads have all the elements of
short stories, such as plot, characters and
setting
Examples:
Epics
Ballads
Dramatic Poems
is any drama that is written in verse that is
meant to be recited. It usually tells a story or
refers to a situation. This would include

Afterwards, he was still.
A Tanka is another verse form
• It has thirty-one syllables arranged in five lines (five,
seven, five, seven, seven)
Examples of Tanka
(Aida Villanueva)

The branches of tree move
I shiver with fear.
Then the sky groans and it cries
Dread seizes me and I swoon.
A Cinquain is a poetic unrhymed
