I was mainly inspired by the methods of magazine Vice and their system of independent distribution directly. They distribute directly to shops such as Urban Outfitters and Retro Bizarre  whose target markets are the same as the magazine’s own and so the magazine is able to take advantage of the customers attracted by the shops. My magazine would benefit greatly from this form of distribution, considering that I am targeting a very niche audience who need to be reached through a common medium. An obvious difference between the magazines, however, is how they are sold. Whilst Vice is free, reliant on advertisement, I feel that Radiowave’s £2.00 price is reasonable, especially having priced it based on the comments of my audience earlier in the project and it’s still cheap for a student audience.
Using my audience research as well as bearing my target audience in mind, I can imagine Radiowave being distributed to indie/alternative clothing shops such as Blue Banana or Urban Outfitters where I would be guaranteed to hit my target audience given that the magazine and the shop will be attracting the same customers. It was mentioned by another friend on my research that the magazine, because of its very strong musical themes, could be sold in music shops too, and in this case targeting places such as HMV would be better, due to its large audience and distribution of many different musical genres. My only wariness about distributing to HMV would be that HMV is very mainstream, and the audience I may find there might be too small to warrant selling my magazine there.
I also intended to have a website version of the magazine with extra and extended articles, photoshoots and reviews, perhaps with messageboards or a comment button for readers to be able to have their views heard, as the idea of “Web 2.0” and how the audience influences the magazine is both interesting and modern and would attract more audience interest. The web would be a useful tool as it provides much larger access to both audience and advertisement opportunities, important in gaining popularity considering my niche audience. After observing how magazines like Kerrang also hosted live events to attract audiences both for the bands included in their magazine and indeed the magazine itself, I decided to recreate this similarly, inventing “Amplified”, a competitive live event in which bands compete to be signed to the magazine’s own label, the magazine having created the event too. This would attract public attention to both the band itself and the magazine, and bolster magazine sales in the future.
