The composition was is dense in colour, with a lighter background and strong and vivid colours of the two sisters. It was a foretaste of the changing style of Renoir of relax and dreamy style. The full title of the painting is ‘Two Sisters (On the Terrace)’, painted on 19 April 1881,oil on canvas, 100.5x81 cm, at the Art Institute of Chicago. It was painted at lunch in Chatou with fellow American artist James NcNeill Whistler. On this incidence, Renoir commented “I am engaged in a struggle with trees in bloom and woman and children and can see no further than thatat the moment … The weather is fine and I had my models; that is my excuse (for not gong to London)”. The painting is an example of Renoir’s shifting his style in the 1880s. Two Sisters celebrates both his recent artistic gains and the promise of beauty inherent in spring and youth.
