2. Foreign policy is a policy such as a treaty that is
made with other nations in order to achieve a
national desire.
3. There are multiple ways in which a President
can make foreign policy. Two of these ways are:
◦ Response to foreign events: The President will
initiate U.S. Policy in reaction to an event or
movement in a foreign nation that challenges US
desires.
◦ Negotiate international agreements: The President
has the ability to negotiate with other countries,
keeping congress in mind, and make such
agreements as trade and arms reductions.
4. Similarly, Congress has the power to make
foreign policies. Two of which being:
◦ Legislative directives: Congress will make
legislature establishing objectives and programs to
direct the executive branch into specific tasks.
◦ Legislative pressure: Congress can threaten the
executive branch with legislation in order to
pressure the executive branch into action.
5. In layman’s terms, the Doctrine states that
Europe must stop colonization in the Western
hemisphere or else.
At the time the doctrine was implemented, we
may not have had any power backing the “or
else,” but this the United States’ first major
foreign policy. The doctrine is the most
important because it became the outline for
how the US works in foreign policy and
similar doctrines like the Eisenhower Doctrine
have followed.
6. NATO’s main role in foreign policy is
operating in crisis-management,
safeguarding democracy, and working to
peaceful resolutions for disputes.
Currently, NATO is in Kosovo maintaining
peace, and is helping build a professional
security force.
7. The UN’s main roles in foreign policy would
include working with nations to improve
standards of living, just improving international
relationships, maintaining peace, and promoting
and protecting human rights
Currently, UN operations in monitoring the
borders of the North and South parts of the Abyei
region in Sudan and is authorized to use force in
order to stop violence, and protect the citizens
and humanitarian workers.
8. The World Hunger Organization’s role in
foreign policy is to implement policies that
assist the large number of people facing
hunger problems due to conflict or other
problem.
Currently, a World Hunger Organization, The
World Food Program, is performing a food
security and nutrition program in the Gaza
region of Mozambique
9. Despite a foreign policy being made with
another nation far away, US citizens can feel an
affect. If it is a trade agreement, prices and
amounts here at home might change for
certain foreign goods. If the policy escalates to
war, taxes might raise to fund, or they might
gradually drop if a treaty is signed to end the
war. The policies might also just trigger moral
responses such as anger to abuses towards
human rights and democracy in another
nation.
