changing reservoir performance and
ever-more challenging fluids.
We review and investigate opportunities
and problems with all types of unit
operations and overall systems installed
offshore and onshore. Our focus is
always on providing a solution that
maximises benefits and minimises
modifications.

At Atkins, we know process engineering is at the heart of topsides production decisions. We can
quickly help you using our cross-domain skills and depth of technical knowledge. Our job, in its
simplest form, is engineering success for our clients. We’d like to show you how we do that, even
in these cost-critical times.

2. Concept engineering
Getting it right, early
Setting a project off in the right
direction is critical to maximising
success. That means both making the
most of any investment in terms of
optimising cost to maximise return,
but also minimising the risks. With our
extensive multidiscipline capability, we
provide a multifaceted approach mixing
individual discipline specialisations
and cross discipline collaboration. This
allows the emergence of innovative
ideas which are then assessed via our
technical and economical expertise.
We provide robust assessment of
the potential options to our clients
to support them in making the right
decision. This includes:
•• Technical evaluation (flowscheme
development, design and
equipment sizing)
•• Constructability review, HAZID, risk
review
•• Economical evaluation, cost and
benefits (IRR, NPV)
•• Reliability, availability and
maintainability evaluation
•• Project schedule
•• Project risk register
•• Business case assessment
“From myself personally and
on behalf of our larger team I
want to thank you for the very
high quality of work done for
this project. Technical content,
details and language of all
documents and deliverables had
actually set a new standard to
follow!”
Client Project Manager
Atkins has given a client CAPEX savings equivalent to $50 - $100
million by filtering out a number of the projects on their portfolio
without a strong business case during the Concept phases.
Advanced process modelling and tools
For an easier, safer and optimised operation
Atkins advanced process modelling
team ensures that our clients can start-
up their assets smoothly, avoiding
unnecessary trips, operate safely by
anticipating major upsets or emergency
shutdowns, and save costs by optimising
controls and design. We specialise
in dynamic process simulation and
transient modelling, for which we use
industry standard packages including
HYSYS dynamics, UniSim dynamics,
OLGA, WANDA.
In addition, we have developed a
number of tailored tools on behalf of
our clients in order to automate their
processes, support efficient operations,
and reduce calculation times. These
include:
•• MeasVal – Performs QA check of
HYSYS model inputs and outputs
to minimise risks of modelling
errors.
•• MeasCap – Capacity model linked
to HYSYS allows multiple facility
production cases to be run and
constraints identified and assessed
quickly.
•• ProRank – Compare and rank
projects / modifications on an
equivalent economic basis to
identify projects that add the most
value
•• Override Assessment Tool
– Allows operators to quickly
assess the risk of multiple related
overrides and understand
the implications and related
safeguards.
•• HAZOP Action Close-out
Management – web-based
HAZOP management centralised
tool to track and control action
progress and provide full visibility
across multiple organisations.
•• Debottlenecking Database
– used to quickly identify
the common options for
debottlenecking; allows a rapid
risk assessment of additional
impacts.
“I want to highlight that the
pace and quality of work that
Atkins performed in a very
short timeframe did not go
unnoticed…”

3. As an asset is ageing, new challenges
appear, from maintaining the facilities
to the latest standards, to improving
uptime or maintaining performance.
We work closely with project teams to
prioritise projects to increase revenue
and reduce risks.
We offer a practical approach to ensure
that the root causes of the problem are
understood, by performing a structured
design and operability review. Options
are selected with the collaboration of
our clients.
Projects and operations (brownfield)
Addressing risks and opportunities on ageing assets
We work closely with our clients
to:
• Understand existing
limitations
• Understand actual operations
and maintenance practices
• Benefit from lessons learned,
past inspections and
investigations
On a recent project, Atkins proposed an improvement solution
for an existing dehydration unit with potential production
savings of £35 million per year.
We will address brownfield challenges
by:
•• Prioritising operational
optimisation
•• Minimising physical modifications
•• Researching latest technologies
•• Assessing impact on surrounding
facilities
•• Incorporating parallel / future
projects
•• Identifying constructability
constraints
•• Considering phasing requirements
•• Minimising shut-down
requirements / tie-ins
•• Proposing improvements to
maintenance strategy
Process optimisation
Maximising asset capability with our solutions
In the oil and gas industry, we
understand that things don’t stand
still. Introducing new wells or new
fields onto a facility might be required,
or the operator might be dealing with
more water or gas from reservoirs. Our
clients may also choose to change how
their facility operates or change out
equipment due to declining reservoir
pressures. Our solutions will ensure that
current operating limits are understood
and changes assessed quickly and easily.
Our strategy includes identifying client
objectives, building an integrated
production model, identifying
capacity constraints, and identifying
and modelling options to address
the constraints. Our in-house tool,
MeasCap, allows us to model many
options rapidly, quickly realising benefits
for each scenario. Options can then be
ranked, and we can support clients in
preparation for progress through the
next stage gate.
Atkins provides the following support:
•• Re-evaluating operation as
production changes
•• Integrating production models
(from reservoir to topsides,
onshore)
•• Automating facility capacity
calculations with Atkins’ MeasCap
tool
•• Identifying capacity constraints
•• Providing recommendations:
Upgrade solutions
Project prioritisation
Preferred operating mode
Project cost benefit
Case to decommission
Soft constraint
Internal mods
Hard bottleneck
MeasCap has been shown to reduce the cost of a typical capacity study by 60%.
4. Our offshore team of experienced
engineers has provided offshore
commissioning support, streamlined
start-up support and project
management for over 10 years. We
have supported over 40 offshore
commissioning projects, ranging
from small remedial scopes to FPSO
redeployment. Our service is typically
provided by engineers who understand
the complete topsides-subsea system
and has typically included the following
elements:
•• Dedicated focal point for planning,
supervision of third parties and
managing the interface between
asset and DSV
•• Assurance that the system is ready
for subsea intervention
•• Permit to Work control and
assurance of Safe Working
Practices
•• Streamlined work sequence to
minimise permit requirements and
delays to dive scope
•• Involvement in diving contractor
and third party vendor workscope
development, to provide the
client’s offshore and onshore
personnel with clear progress and
risk identification/ reporting
Commissioning support
Streamlined start-up
We saved our client over £5 million in DSV time over a 100-day
campaign.
Over 1000 man days with no LTIs.
“Well planned and executed
workscope with no delays due
to procedures. Atkins team
integrated very well into the
production team giving open
and honest communication.”
