C. LessonProper
As early as 300 BC. India already
possessed a body of literature written in several
Indian tongues derived from common ancestral
language.
One of those literary pieces is the
Panchatantra. It is a rich collection of brief
stories of ancient times. This book is said to
contain the first parables ever written. In
literature, how can you define a parable?
4. A parable is a story commonly lifted from
the Bible or any religious texts primarily to
teach moral lessons that can be applied n
everyday life.
In relation to your Social Studies class,
India gave birth to the four great social classes
of people or the caste system. Who are those?
The growth of Hinduism gave birth to the
caste system in India: the Brahmans
(priests/scholars); Kshatriyas (warriors);
Vaisyas (peasants who later on became
merchants); and Sudras (slaves).
The stories from the Panchatantra are
arranged into frames. One story leads to
another. The chosen story is about four men
who travel to test the extent of their
intelligence. Who are the lion makers
mentioned in the story?
The Lion Makers are the Brahmans or the
priests/scholars.
Where did the story take place?
The story happened at a certain town in
India.
The characters in the story have a very
distinctive identity. How can you describe
each?
They are the four Brahmans who lived in
friendship. Three of them had reached the far
shore of scholarship but lacked sense. The
other found scholarship useless; he had nothing
but sense.
In what way did the Brahmans try to
apply what they had learned from their
scholarship?
They met for consultation and they planned
to travel to know whether they learned or not
from their scholarship.
The Brahmans decided to travel to earn
the favors of kings and acquire money. Who
suggested among them to let their dullard
friend to turn back and go home because of his
lack of scholarship?
The eldest Brahman.
Cite some lines uttered by the eldest
Brahman to justify your answer.
“One of us, the fourth is a dullard having
nothing but sense. Now nobody gains the
favorable attention of kings by sense without
scholarship. Therefore, we will not share our
earnings with him. Let him turned back and go
home.”
What did it show on his character?
The eldest Brahman is very selfish and he
underestimated the capabilities of the fourth
Brahman.
How did the third Brahman react upon
hearing the eldest Brahman’s argument? What
5. did it reveal about his character?
The third Brahman disagreed and defended
the fourth Brahman. He believed that some
way or another, the fourth Brahman could help
them. He valued their friendship.
With this agreement, they continued their
journey and on their way to the forest what did
they find?
It served as their opportunity to test the
ripeness of their intelligence. They planned to
bring the dead lion back into life again.
To prove that they are all great and
intelligent what did they do with the bones of
the dead lion?
Give the contribution of the first
Brahman to bring the lion back into life.
The first Brahman assembled the skeleton.
With continued boastfulness, what did
the second Brahman do?
He provided the skin, flesh and blood.
How about the third Brahman?
He could give it the breath of life.
The first assembled the skeleton; the
second provided the skin, flesh and blood.
How did the fourth Brahman protest when the
third Brahman intended of giving the breath of
life to the dead lion?
The fourth Brahman warned them that it was
a lion and it could kill them if they would bring
it to life.
Did the three Brahmans believe to the
man having no scholarship but only sense?
No, they regarded him as a fool and inferior
to them. They continued their plan.
What did the fourth Brahman do instead?
He climbed into a convenient tree where the
lion could not reach him.
State what happened to the three
Brahmans.
The three Brahmans were slain by the lion.

than sense. Therefore, seek intelligence;
senseless scholars in their pride made a lion,
