TOP 5 BEST PRACTICES:
1 – Be specific, identify the 3 – 5 agencies you’re interested in working with based on the services
they buy and the services you offer
2 – Be succinct – on average it takes 18 months and/or 9 touches with a contract officer or program
manager to be awarded a contract. When you make contact, be ready with opportunities you’ve
researched/identified and/or have a white paper that explains your successes and how you could help
the agency meet their mission.
3 – Be smart – price for a profit. Don’t cut your price to get your foot in the door. (will also mention
the SMART acronym – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely)
4 – Be significant – if you haven’t done it, you don’t do it. Be prepared to explain your past
performance and demonstrate you are experienced with contracting (government or commercial).
Also, be open to teaming to increase your capacity or capabilities to compete for contracts.
5 – Be sincere – people do business with people who they like. Being kind and genuine can go a long
way and also help distinguish you amongst your peers.

When you make contact, be ready with opportunities you’ve researched/identified and/or have a white paper that explains your successes and how you could help the agency meet their mission. 3 – Be smart – price for a profit. Don’t cut your price to get your foot in the door. (will also mention the SMART acronym – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely) 4 – Be significant – if you haven’t done it, you don’t do it. Be prepared to explain your past performance and demonstrate you are experienced with contracting (government or commercial). Also, be open to teaming to increase your capacity or capabilities to compete for contracts. 5 – Be sincere – people do business with people who they like.
