Success and growth in the tree care industry

  1. 1. SUCCESS AND GROWTH In The Tree Care Business
  2. 2. Congratulations on the success of your tree service business. 1 The clients who leveraged and took advantage of these technology trends grew their business and they grew it fast. But we learned it is important to work with the right company. The kind of company that wants to grow and can handle the growth. We don’t want you to have short lived accelerated growth. We want you to experience sustainable and responsible growth, the kind that matches the long term vision of your business. You do have a long term vision, right? Even if you don’t, it’s ok. This book will help you. As you read, you’ll learn these trends we talk about are revolutionary, but not impossible to implement. They’re proven, often times common sense technolo- gy pieces that you might already have in place. In fact, your business might just need to optimize these things in order to achieve growth. But again, the majority of tree businesses do not take complete advan- tage of these pieces. The information presented in this document can fuel the growth and expan- sion of your tree service business over the next year. How do we know? We’ve seen it happen. The majority of the clients we’ve worked with over the last years have been missing one or all of these critical elements that were necessary not only to sustain their business but to grow and outper- form their competitors as well.
  3. 3. Our job is to be the experts in tree service marketing and your job is to do what you do best. PROVIDE TREE CARE SERVICES. We have a lot to share with you about how your tree removal business can dominate the market, expand territories and take the success of your business to new levels. DRAMATIC CHANGES IN THE MARKETPLACE The landscape has changed dramatically in just a few years and will con- tinue to change at an alarming rate. With the continued development and deployment of technology, the way consumers shop and buy has changed dramatically. How they research products & services, how they hear about them (social media) and how they make a final purchasing decision all rep- resents a shift to the power of the consumer. There are three components of this consumer shift that will affect your tree care business. • Search Engines • Social Media • Mobile Devices You need to leverage these 3 things to dominate your market. 2 Avanti Vision: We help tree service businesses grow, expand and dominate their markets.
  4. 4. 93% of consumers use search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) to find out infor- mation about a business. 97% percent of consumers search for local businesses online with Google. This means two things for your business. Search is King Anyone who uses the internet uses a search engine to find information. And Google has the highest share of search engine users at roughly 65%. (Bing ~ 20% and Yahoo ~ 15%). You Need First Page Placement On Search Engines (particularly Google). Search is king but more importantly it is kingmaker as well. High visibility in search engines means more website traffic, more leads, more customers, more referrals and more profit for your business. 1. Search Engines 3
  5. 5. The tree services industry has become a super competitive marketplace in the last few years and there are more popping up every day. First place placement on search engines is the difference between being an unknown company or being Top Dog. Rank Matters After a consumer enters a keyword into Google, they’re presented with pages and pages of results. Most (about 97%) of consumers will never click beyond the first page of Google results. Then, consumers tend to focus only on the top 3-5 results. It’s not enough anymore to even rank in Google, you have to be one of the top three to even be relevant. You know the joke: Where is the best place to hide a body? On the second page of Google. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Out there for everyone to see about your business is the good, the bad and the ugly. Getting found on search engines is a double-edged blade, both good and bad. Customers who provided reviews for your business are visible. But what if some of your review are negative? What if they’re downright bad. Bad reviews will haunt your business for years and having a crushing negative impact on your profits. Good reviews on the other hand can generate referral traffic and provide social proof of jobs well done. 4
  6. 6. 2. SOCIAL MEDIA You’ve heard the hype about social media and unfortunately there is a reason for that. Social platforms have been an absolute game changer for businesses, like it or not. The Rise The rise of social media is amazing. Facebook grew from a Harvard dor- mitory to an internet force with over 1,000,000,000 global users…in less than 10 years. Facebook seems like old news now - a presence in our lives that we take for granted - but it’s worth noting how recently this shift has taken place. Not Just For Kids A common misconception that businesses have is that Facebook and other social media outlets are just for kids and teenagers, thus their target market is not represented on the site. But the opposite is true. Social media users range through all ages and fastest rising age group using social media are people over 35. That means a lot for you because that age group typically owns property and have the larger income. 5 60% of U.S. consumers use social media to vent about customer service issues.
  7. 7. High Engagement People aren’t just using social networks, they’re practically living on them. The average Facebook user spends close to 8 hours a month on the site. That’s about 15 minutes every day! That’s not including the other big social media outlets like Twitter, Linked In, Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat. This means one thing: Your customers are on Social Media and they’re spending a lot of time on there. They’re sharing, tweeting, liking, pinning, friending, starring, following, fan- ning, posting, hash tagging, uploading, retweeting … you name it. If you want to capture their attention, reach out to them or pitch them your services you’ll have to meet them there before the competition does. 6
  8. 8. Sharing Their Experiences and Frustrations Consumers nowadays take to the web and share their experiences with brands. What they share with friends, family and associates isn’t always flattering. People are use social media to vent out bad experiences and problems like customer service issues. And it’s not just Facebook, it’s happening on other sites like Yelp, Google +, Twitter and Angies List. If your business doesn’t realize these online reviews are happening, you’re in trouble. Though you can’t control what people say about you or your business online, you should monitor, manage and contribute to the conversations to influence the outcome. As a tree service business owner, you must realize that having an active online presence, focused on adding value to the customer, is the best way to preserve and expand your company’s reputation and brand. You must protect yourself from the ramblings of a few unhappy customers by monitoring and engaging these people through social media. 7
  9. 9. 8 The Buyer Expectation Being relevant, staying relevant and giving timely updated information to your buyers is another reason you have to be on social media. Your buyers and potential customers expect it, and if you fall short of their expectations, they will spend their money somewhere else. For exam- ple: Imagine severe thunderstorms just passed through your area, you post on social media that your company is ready to clean up any storm damage, property damage or fallen trees. This post will reach your cus- tomers or potential customers in real-time at a relevant moment. Join the conversation or your competitors will.
  10. 10. 9 3. MOBILE Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, you see someone with his or her face buried in their phone - surfing the web, checking social media, reading emails, watching videos, playing games and the list goes on. This trend is not slowing down. In fact, it will only increase as the technology gets better. The mobile computing revolution is one you cannot underestimate. Today, 325 million Americans have mobile phones and believe it or not some have more than one. When did these devices became a “can’t live without” essential?
  11. 11. If you’re a little younger and grew up with these devices then you really can’t appreciate all the things they’re capable of nowadays, you take it for granted. Your cell phone has more computer power than NASA did in 1969 when it placed two men on the moon. It’s hard to believe. A square device that fits in your hand has a greater computational capacity then an entire govern- ment agency did guiding a spacecraft’s around the earth 46 years ago. Do not underestimate the power of this. There are 5 billion people in the world carrying this device around in their pockets. It takes someone longer to report a stolen wallet (26 hours) then it does a lost cell phone (68 min- utes). 10 The Revolution Is Mobile The future of the web is tied to smart phones and other mobile devices. People will visit your website from a small-screened device more and more instead of a desktop or laptop. What does that mean to you, the tree ser- vice business owner? It means: if you want to dominate your region and grow, you’ll need a web- site that supports a multitude of platforms, specifically the smart phone.
  12. 12. 11 We all know the economy has been slow to recover in the past years. People are worried about los- ing their jobs still. Millions of homeowners are concerned about their mortgage pay- ments and whether owning a home is actually worth it. Credit-card debt continues to weigh down U.S. households. Challenging times indeed for consumers and businesses alike. As a business owner, you can’t give them any more reasons not to buy your prod- ucts or services. If your site is not optimized for mobile, people will very quickly leave your site and never come back. If your mobile business site looks cluttered, cramped, or non-legible when viewed on a tablet or smart phone, customers will leave. What’s more, you don’t want to add any additional friction to the process of buy- ing your products and services! A streamlined, functional website for mobile is a new must-have. Particularly when you consider that people with smart phones are still turning to search engines to look for information. Mobile Matters In This Economy
  13. 13. What does all of this means to YOU! Show of hands: • Do you do research online before making a purchase? • Do you search online before deciding what businesses to buy from? • Do you choose a company based on the positive recommendations you heard from friends on social media? • Do you carry a smart phone with you at all times? YES. We all do! These trends are only accelerating. Is your business being left behind? As much as you wish business would remain as usual, it will not. The search, social and mobile paradigm is not going anywhere. If you are a tree service busi- ness that has not addressed where you show up in search engines, what social media platforms to use or have not yet built a mobile friendly website - then you are behind the ball and making matters worse for your business. 12 Search On Mobile, Purchase On Mobile People who use their cell phones to research products and services are more likely to take immediate action and buy from their cell phones. Meaning that, if you have a contact us, book now, purchase now or call us call-to-action, a consumer will take action.
  14. 14. 13 It’s Time to Put The Blade To The Wood. Do you have someone that is helping your business in these areas? If you think you’re going to do it yourself or with the effort of one of your em- ployees that may or may not have a marketing background, you are kidding yourself. Dealing with the day-to-day operations of your business leaves little time or motivation to learn and master the fundamentals of Search Engine Mar- keting (SEM) or Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As your slow season rolls in, you have to assume your competitor is going all to address and implement these technologies. Search engines, social media and mobile technology are now part of the com- petitive landscape of the tree care industry. The businesses that get this will only widen their gap and domination over those that do not.
  15. 15. ARE YOU READY? You might realize that you need to make a change, that you’re not growing like you should, that your current approach to getting new customers is not producing and you’re committed to getting past your current income level. If so, there is potential for us to work together. However, we are particular about who we work with. We only work with one tree care businesses per geographic region who have the mindset and resources to handle the level of growth that is possible.
