BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Javier Pizarro-Berdichevsky is an Assistant Professor of the Obstetrics and Gynecology
Division, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. He also works as an Urogynecologist at Dr.
Sotero del Rio Hospital, the largest Chilean public hospital. Dr. Pizarro-Berdichevsky joined the
Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute of Cleveland Clinic as a research scholar from 2012 to
2014. He worked for 2 years in stem cell therapy for pelvic organ prolapse with groundbreaking
results. In 2014 he was recruited for a clinical fellowship position at the Female Pelvic Medicine
and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) section of the urology department.
Dr. Pizarro-Berdichevsky’s contributions to the scientific community includes over 24
publications in peer-reviewed journals, 73 abstracts and 19 meeting presentations. His work
includes reviving an old but highly successive colpocleisis technique, the validation of a Spanish
QOL questionnaire, a prospective study for non-surgical management of prolapse, and a survey
to understand surgeons' attitudes towards sling tensioning during surgery for female stress
urinary incontinence. His on-going projects including the natural history of symptomatic
prolapse generate understanding of pelvic floor function and pathophysiology. Dr. Pizarro-
Berdichevsky is currently in charge of a functional head MRI study for a better understanding of
the Brain activity in patient with a succesful InterStim theraphy for oaveractive bladder. He
currently is the principal investigator for more than 10 funded clinical research projects. He was
recently appointed as a member of the IUGA Terminology and Standardization Committee and

 The mismatch repair genes are responsible of correcting the errors during the DNA
replication. Defects in these genes have been associated to urological cancers. Our
aim was to study these errors in testicular cancer cells compared to normal testis cells.
We demonstrate a higher rate of errors in the testicular cancer cells. These results
suggest that the mismatch repair genes errors may be implicated in the genesis of
tumor cells.

We demonstrate a higher rate of errors in the testicular cancer cells particularly in
seminomas. These results suggest that the mismatch repair genes errors may be
implicated in the genesis of tumor cells. At the same time it could be related to an
increased aggressiveness.

 The mismatch repair genes are responsible of correcting the errors during the DNA
replication. Defects in these genes have been associated to urological cancers. We
demonstrated in previous studies that these errors are related to testicular cancer. Our
aim was to correlate the presence of these errors with the cancer stage, prognosis and
survival. Our results shown higher rate of Mismatch repair errors in advance stages,
also the recurrence after chemotherapy was higher and the mortality was higher. The
study of these errors is a useful tool in prognostic evaluation of testicular cancer.

frequency of the so-called “microsatellite instability” (MSI) of these genes could be
related to worse prognosis in testicular cancer. Our aim was to determine the rate of
MSI in testicular cancer and the correlation to clinical outcomes. Our results shown a

 Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women. POP is related to
diminished quality of life. POP surgeries are associated to high recurrence rate. To
reduce the recurrence mesh prosthesis has been used. These meshes are associated to
specific complications as erosion of the vagina and retraction of the mesh which can
determine pain during intercourse. Our aim was to identify risk or protective factors
for these specific complications. We show that the post menopause status was a

 Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women. POP is related to
diminished quality of life. POP is divided in 4 stages. Stage II can include patients
with and without bothersome POP. Our aim was to identify risk factors for
bothersome stage II POP. We found that the presence of urinary incontinence at the
moment of physical examination was the only recognizable risk factor.

 Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women. POP is related to
diminished quality of life. POP surgeries are associated to high recurrence rate. To
reduce the recurrence mesh prosthesis has been used - based on the assumption that
the mesh is inert. However these meshes are associated to specific complications as
erosion of the vagina which can determine pain during intercourse and other types of
discomfort. Our aim was to determine if the most common mesh used can produce
cell inflammation during in vitro culture explaining partially the origin of the
complications. The preliminary results shown a dramatic inflammation reaction of the
vaginal cells over time. Our results could motivate new strategies to reduce the mesh
surgery complications.

 The used of anti-diabetes drug called Metformin has been correlated better prognosis
in ovarian cancer women. Different theories have been used to explain these findings.
Our aim was to examine if Metformin alone or in combination with classic ovarian
cancer chemotherapy could bring about ovarian cancer cell death. We proved that
metformin alone was not able to cause cell death but increased the cell mortality in
combination with chemotherapy. Furthermore in 44% of the cultures from patients
with ovarian cancer the addition of metformin improve the ability of chemotherapy to
kill the cells. Our results support the need of clinical studies to evaluate the effect of
metformin as part of the ovarian cancer treatment.

 There is minimal data on progression of prolapse (POP) in symptomatic women. At
our institution, many patients may wait months or years for surgery. We
prospectively describe the natural evolution of POP in this group of patients. This
unique information will allow for a better understanding of the progression of pelvic

 Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women, increasing whit aging.
POP is related to diminished quality of life. Vaginal pessaries are a treatment option
mostly reserved for old and frail women. Some specialists prefer surgery as the
treatment of choice. The aim of this study was to describe the subjective response and
complications associated with the use of pessaries in patients ≤65 years old with POP.
Eighty eight percent noted significant subjective improvement. In conclusion the use
of vaginal pessaries in patients under 65 with POP is feasible, associated with
subjective improvement in symptoms, with low complication rate.

Defects in these genes have been associated to urological cancers. Our aim was to study these errors in testicular cancer cells compared to normal testis cells. We demonstrate a higher rate of errors in the testicular cancer cells. These results suggest that the mismatch repair genes errors may be implicated in the genesis of tumor cells. 2. Our aim was to study these errors in testicular cancer cells compared to normal testis cells. We demonstrate a higher rate of errors in the testicular cancer cells particularly in seminomas. These results suggest that the mismatch repair genes errors may be implicated in the genesis of tumor cells. At the same time it could be related to an increased aggressiveness. 3. We demonstrated in previous studies that these errors are related to testicular cancer. Our aim was to correlate the presence of these errors with the cancer stage, prognosis and survival. Our results shown higher rate of Mismatch repair errors in advance stages, also the recurrence after chemotherapy was higher and the mortality was higher. The study of these errors is a useful tool in prognostic evaluation of testicular cancer. 4. Velasco A, Pizarro J, Berlín A, Wistuba I, Villaroel L, Leach Fs. Risk Factors For Mesh Shrinkage And Erosion In Prolift Like (Pl) Surgery: Can Menopausal Status And Dyslipidemia Explain Them? Int Urogynecol J (2010) 21 (Suppl 1):S161–S162  Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women. POP is related to diminished quality of life. POP surgeries are associated to high recurrence rate. To reduce the recurrence mesh prosthesis has been used. These meshes are associated to specific complications as erosion of the vagina and retraction of the mesh which can determine pain during intercourse. Our aim was to identify risk or protective factors for these specific complications. We show that the post menopause status was a protective factor and having high cholesterol has a tendency to be a risk factor. 8. J. A. Pizarro Berdichevsky, G. Galleguillos, R. Cuevas, M. Int Urogynecol J (2012) 23 (Suppl 2): S43–S244  Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) can affect 30-40% of women. POP is related to diminished quality of life. POP surgeries are associated to high recurrence rate. To reduce the recurrence mesh prosthesis has been used - based on the assumption that the mesh is inert. However these meshes are associated to specific complications as erosion of the vagina which can determine pain during intercourse and other types of discomfort. Our aim was to determine if the most common mesh used can produce cell inflammation during in vitro culture explaining partially the origin of the complications. The preliminary results shown a dramatic inflammation reaction of the vaginal cells over time. Our results could motivate new strategies to reduce the mesh surgery complications. 11. Different theories have been used to explain these findings. Our aim was to examine if Metformin alone or in combination with classic ovarian cancer chemotherapy could bring about ovarian cancer cell death. We proved that metformin alone was not able to cause cell death but increased the cell mortality in combination with chemotherapy. Furthermore in 44% of the cultures from patients with ovarian cancer the addition of metformin improve the ability of chemotherapy to kill the cells. Our results support the need of clinical studies to evaluate the effect of metformin as part of the ovarian cancer treatment. 16.
