9. Just 30 minutes north of Uvalde, Garner State
Park is known for hiking, swimming and
camping – enough to make it one of the most
visited state campgrounds in Texas, attracting
about 350,000 campers each year.
Being the most popular Texas state park, there
must be many, many others who agree. From
its cold, crystal clear waters to the majestic
Old Baldy overlooking the park, and the
amazing Hill Country scenery and wonderful
people you will encounter, Garner is
something everyone should experience!
Garner is known for its bone-chilling water,
otherwise known as the Frio River. The
Frio River is really cold, y'all, hence its
name. It has three tributaries - The East,
West and Dry Frio Rivers. All tributaries
originate from a spring and conjoin in
Uvalde County, where it continues to flow
south until it reaches the Nueces River near
Three Rivers.
The park's rock formations were created in
the Cretaceous age, which ended around
65 million years ago.
These canyons and hills, including the
famous Old Baldy photographed above,
formed when limestone in the Edwards
Plateau uplifted.
Before tubers flocked to the river, natives
camped in the area , 12,000 years ago.
Aborigines chose to live in the area
because of its plentiful game, useful plants
and dependable Frio River.
Garner is one of 31 existing Texas parks
built by the Civilian Conservation Corps
(CCC).
The CCC provided 2.5 million young men
with outdoor jobs in camps across the U.S.
from 1933 to 1942.
Enrollees helped build 56 parks in Texas, of
which 31 are still in operation, including
Bastrop and Palo Duro Canyon state parks.

All About Garner
10. Still, Garner's wife, Ettie, supported the project,
which led to the acquiring of land. The park was
purchased for $12 an acre in the mid-1930s.
County Judge C. P. Spangler petitioned for the
park starting in 1933 and local groups were able
to purchase the 478 acres for $12 an acre. After
traveling to Washington D.C., Spangler gained
approval for the project and construction began
in 1935. The park opened six years later.
All original buildings are made from local
materials. Members of the CCC used native stone
from local quarries to construct buildings,
fireplaces and other structures.
Bald cypress trees that line the Frio River live to
be 600 years old. The trees stand 120 feet tall and
tower over Garner State Park and the Frio River.
Some trees have lived more than 1,000 years.
The park is considered the best for dancing,
along with swimming and hiking. Garner State
Park is well known for its large outdoor pavilion,
which holds dances throughout the summer.
TPWD Magazine deemed the park "The Best
Dance to a Timeless Tune."
"It’s a familiar scene for many Texans — a warm
summer’s night at Garner, the stars shining
overhead and the dance floor full, the jukebox
playing a tune from long ago.”
With around 350,000 visitors annually, Garner is
the most popular Texas State Park for camping
since it opened in the early 1940s.
Even before it was acquired by the state, the
Magers family owned part of the land and ran a
camp in the 1920s.
Garner State Park is named after John Nance
Garner, the 32nd vice president of the United
States. Former Vice President Garner moved to
Uvalde, Texas, where he served as a county judge
and, later, as a legislator. He served under
former President Franklin D. Roosevelt from
1933–1941.
But at first, former Vice President Garner did not
support the new project. He opposed
construction through the CCC because it called
for federal funding.

11. AXIS DEER - GARNER STATE PARK | PG. 11
Workers also used local cypress for
beams and doors and a local
blacksmith shop manufactured
metals for hinges and light fixtures.
The Frio Canyon's primary exotic
animal, the Axis deer, is seen as a
threat to white-tailed deer. White-
tailed deer are native to Garner
State Park, but they compete for
food resources with non-native Axis
deer.
The park is known for its abundant
wildlife, including fox squirrels, Rio
Grande turkeys and raccoons.
The canyons at the park allow for
lush vegetation - something that is
uncommon in the Hill Country.
Because the canyons are angled
southeast to northwest, winds keep
the temperature low and landscape
moistened, though the Hill Country
is typically dry.
