2. GUIDANC
E
This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
should cover for a practical project. It
is not exhaustive, but provides some
guidance on stages, types of planning
and documents you should be
assembling. This is not a one size fits
all document, you will need to amend,
rejig and add/subtract sections
depending on what you are making.
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary.
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Use section to track your process of of generating ideas.
List and discuss the styles, techniques and conventions
that you have identified in your research. Explore how
you could approach the project using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
Make sure you assess the viability of ideas as well as the
potential for them creatively.
5. RESEARCH
Use this to summarise production research and existing
products from your previous investigations. Link this into
you idea generation and development.
6. Reflecting on the research that I conducted I found that
looking into what my audience are interested in was
helpful for me because it allowed me to gain more
knowledge on what they would be attracted to. I know
that young adults are keen to stay active and like a
challenge which is why I thought my idea would be
suitable for my audience.
When looking further into my audience I started to
research physio graphics, I noticed that most of my
audience may be socially conscious which was a negative
for my project. This is because players would have to
travel around York using public transport which isnโt
environmentally friendly and young adults like to speak
their mind which could result in some complaints etc.

Summary
7. RESEARCH SUMMARY
When researching into existing products I found that
looking at exiting apps that are similar to what I would be
making, looking at the UI & UX within Instagram allowed me
to gain some ideas on how I want my app to look, I used
Instagram as an example because I though that Instagram's
layout was minimalistic yet effective. This was something
that I wanted to achieve within my app because I wanted it
to be easy to navigate through. I am hoping to make my
home page simplistic and should be easy to use. I wanted to
add some of my own features that arenโt included in
Instagram's layout like a leader board. I also looked into
geocaching as its something that I wanted to try and portray
through my project. I found that including a exploration
element int my idea that players would have more of an
incentive to play and should be able to keep their attention
One issue that I ran into when researching geocaching was
that players may mess around with the content inside of the
box which will then ruin the experience for the rest of the
players, another issue is that players might not fully
understand the clues and end up never finding the box.
14. FINAL IDEA โ RATIONALE
I have decided on this project because I feel as if it will work well my
target audience as I am trying to put a different perspective onto York.
With making my idea more outdoor based with activities along the
way, it will entice the younger audience because of the game aspect
of it.
I am also making an app for players to blog their photos and is used
to see other players progress using the leader board system. The app
will be free to download for everyone on the Apple App store and
Google play. I am going to make a video for an introduction to the app
and an introduction to the game.
15. FINAL IDEA โ CREATIVE
CONCEPT
The concept for this project is an app that anyone can download, this
app will allow players to take photos of the locations and the boxes in
those locations, other players can see each otherโs photos and be able
to like them and rate them. People with the highest scores from the
day will get a prize which is vouchers for shops nearby. This will entice
the players to go to separate locations after the game has finished to
use their vouchers. Inside the box will be items that have been pre-
placed, and players will have to include that item in their photo. There
will be a clue as to which one they have to use, and the clue will be in
the box. This game will be a race and players will be on a time limit,
every player will start at a different location in York and will have to
work their way around to try and complete all locations.
I will need to research into my audience a bit more and understand
what their true interests are, this will be useful because I will be able to
create an introduction video that would be suited to my target
audience instead of older people for example. I will research into
existing products such as Instagram, Be Real and geocaching. All these
apps are relevant to my project as they all have something that I am
wanting to include with my app/game
17. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make it.
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are on Teams.
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
18. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production:
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome and what will be delivered [duration, format[s],
etc]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from a pitch]
19. LOCATIONS
Starting point โ Bridge over the river
York Minster
Shambles
River Ouse
Clifford's tower
The Mansion House
Various pubs/cafes
The cost will be completely
free, the distance between all
locations wont be far at all,
meaning it will be within
walking distance. All players
will have to find their own way
to the starting point and after
that they will be given a route
to take to complete all
locations
20. EQUIPMENT
I will need to book a room for me to film in ( 12th
October)
I will need lighting equipment from college
I will use my own camera
21. FACILITIES
I will edit my video at College using the PCโs in class
To edit my video, I will use adobe premiere and I will
potentially use Adobe After effects just for some added
features
In case I want to work on my video after college I can
download Premiere Pro on my home PC
25. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual/creative
planning of your production. This is WHAT you want to
make
You should use this section to develop what is it going to
look/sound like and establish what the visual design is
and the desired sequence.
It is important that you โpre-visualiseโ the project before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process.
The following tasks should be part of your visual
planning, including:
๏ญ Pre-visualisation and concept boards
๏ญ Storyboarding
๏ญ Shot list
๏ญ Flat plans
๏ญ Colour plans
26. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the โlook & feelโ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the โmise-en-sceneโ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
29. MOVING IMAGE TEST/DRAFT
IMAGE TESTING
Remember to test methods, techniques and styles. Detail
them here and upload the finished video work to your
website as well. Add more slides as necessary
30. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN/PLANNING
Breakdown your project into its basic sections and apply
broad visual and creative ideas to each section.
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots/pages, etc to each
section when you develop your full sequenced plan and
planned outcomes.
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
project, then add a slide for each section with timings,
what happens visually and in terms of audio, page layout
aim to have as much specific detail as possible.
The structure of the project and method of doing this is
dictated by the type of project.
32. STORYBOARDING - VIDEO
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production visually
Remember, each frame should be as the camera frames it
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
๏ญ https://www.storyboardthat.com
๏ญ http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
๏ญ http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
33. AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING
Remember, video production is a multi-sensory medium,
do not forget your audio planning, whether this is for
spoken dialogue, VO/narration, sound effect or
soundtrack. This needs detailed planning, linking to
sequencing and sourcing/creating.
34. PRINT/NON-MOVING IMAGE
PLANNING
Rather than storyboarding and sequence planning, print
and still image projects require different image and
layout plans.
You should research conventions for your chosen
medium in your earlier work and then approach the
project using some of the methods youโve discovered.
36. ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING
If the visual and creative planning is the WHAT of the
production, organisational planning the WHO, WHAT,
WHERE, WHEN and WHY of the production.
This is the functional planning for the project, applying
common sense and organisation to your creative ideas.
37. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
38. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Teams kit booking as a
starting point.
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
40. CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
42. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youโre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
44. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
All locations that I will be filming in are public places
therefore I will be able to film what I need without having
to gain permission from anyone, this will make the
process of filming a lot easier for me and allows me
more time.
Editor's Notes
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this?
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you? Models? Contributors? Interviewees?
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Teams.
