2. The poetic documentary style is a unique way of displaying
Feelings through video, it mainly focuses on the different
experiences in peoples life and creates a new perspective on
peoples life. This type of style often has a ‘loose narrative’
therefore meaning that there isn’t much dialogue and in order to
be able to understand the meaning behind the documentary you
will have to play close attention to the imagery. One recurring
theme within with poetic documentaries is that they are
normally quite experimental and they try to create a certain
mood or tone within the documentary
This subgenre I find interesting but its something that I will not
be including in my own work as I will need more of a narrative in
my work and my idea will simply not work if there is limited
dialogue. Another reason why I am not going to be using this
type of documentary style is that I am trying to achieve
something less serious and with the imagery being a key factor
within this style, it creates a more serious tone which wouldn’t
work for me.

3. Expository documentaries is where there is footage used to
support a point or argument, I've decided to look into this style
because I think it links quite nicely with my idea. This is because
I would plan to also use footage to support my point while also
narrating over the videos or images on screen. I would have to
really research into my idea when using this style of
documentary because the style is constructed to inform or
persuade the audience.
This would work well with my idea because I am wanting to
inform the audience about fashion and explain my POV and
other peoples POV through imagery and videography. I feel as if
this style Is great for interviewing people about the subject as it
could be quite informative and interesting for the viewers.

4. Observational Documentary
Observational documentaries is an interesting style and
exclude all use of voice over narration, soundtracks and
interviews. Immediately this type of style wouldn’t be
overly useful for my project however I am taking
something away from this style of documentary.
For example I am wanting to include raw footage of
peoples everyday life and what they are wearing, I would
do this without any sound other than the sound coming
straight from the camera. I would use this style to further
observe my subject in real life situations without
interrupting them. This would give me a natural feel to my
footage and I think it would work quite well with my idea
of fashion. This is because there are so many people
wearing so much different things and I think it would be
great to include all the different types of fashion.

5. I decided to research into a similar style of videos as to what I
will be making, this will help me further extend my knowledge
on how to layout my video and what sort of things I should be
including within it. So far I have learnt that supplying images on
the screen while I am narrating with help further prove my
point to my audience, it also helps create a better visual
experience for the viewers. The different editing techniques in
these videos that I am researching into are helpful for me when
linking back to my project because it allows me to understand
how I should be editing my videos in order to keep the viewers
attention at all times.
I am wanting my video to be informative yet also entertaining
and by making it more comedic and playing around with editing
techniques on Photoshop I will be able to achieve that.

6. Editing Techniques
After researching into other documentaries on YouTube covering fashion
I have noticed that a few different documentaries include fast paced
editing which is something that I am going to take into consideration
when I am in the production phase of this project. I think including fast
paced editing will help keep the younger audience interested in the
video, because I feel like a lot of docs are quite slow and the way that
they give out information can be a bit boring sometimes. An example of
this could be when you are just reading from a script word for word and
not incorporating any sense of realism to your point, hence why I am
wanting to make my doc more comedic because I think it’s a great way
to get my point across.
Some of the docs had stock images displaying on the screen while
someone was narrating behind it. This is something that I am wanting to
try and achieve however I am aware that all work has to be my own,
with that in mind I am still planning to incorporate stock images but edit
them on photoshop and make them my own. This is something that I
thought worked well for the docs that I was researching into, I think it
works well because the viewers can gain a better understanding on what
is being said through visuals.
7. Research summary:
To summarise I feel like the research that I conducted was extremely helpful and has allowed me to gain a better
understanding on what type of documentary style I am wanting to use and what would best fit my idea. When
looking at the few subgenres of documentaries there was lots of things that I also found out that wouldn’t be
useful for me, which would then help me further realise how I want my video to be laid out. By conducting this
research I have found a better understanding of my target audience, this allows my project to be better aimed at
the right audience which should help the final piece.
I have also learned about the different editing techniques and how they become useful for the viewers
perspective, what I mean by this is that there is a certain type of editing style used in the docs that I think could be
useful for my final piece. Some examples of these techniques are fast paced editing, quick/smooth transitions etc.

Context affects what is produced, how it is produced and who can produce it.
Technology is part of the context. Early fanzines were hand made because there was no InDesign or Photoshop. Web-series simply didn’t existing because the web didn’t exist.
People who don’t have access to jobs in mainstream media, to become journalists or editors, might produce work independently of that system.
People who don’t see themselves or their interests being represented in main stream media, might produce something that represents them or their social group.
The political situation will influence what someone decides to make. The cultural situation will influence what people make.
Every media text is a product of its environment, just like people.
Style: The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed. The combination of distinctive features of literary or artistic expression, execution, or performance
characterizing a particular person, group, school, or era.
For example, a podcast could be two people talking, it could be interviews and a voice over, it could just be a recording of a teaching session… how it is done, is the style.
Techniques:
How are these things being made? What methods are being used? Find out and also use your own experience. For example, is a fanzine being hand written or word processed? How do people making a web series set up their shooting spaces? The more you can find out about technique, the more you can get ideas for your own work.
Content:
The material, including text and images, that constitutes a publication or document.
What is actually in this product? Break it down. Is it interviews, monologues, reviews, instructions… Identify the different types of content in the items you research, to help your own ideas.
