Audience Research
James
Secondary Audience research
• Observation: I selected a video from the youtube channel 'Fantano'. It's a music
based youtube channel that has a lot of videos based around music discussion.
This one about Taylor Swift is farily popular, mainly because it's a more negative
leaning video based around a more popular artist.
• What this says about my audience: The audience is more atracted to
discussions surrounding mainstream popular artists, especially if it's more
negative, since that draws the most attention.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I'm hoping my product will cover
the more mainstream artists, and the bad side of some them, be it in their words,
actions or music.
Secondary Audience research
• Observation: A more straight to the point title, that's much more on the negative side compared to
the last one. This video again came from a more music focused channel, primeraly the rap scene
and all the news/albums that come from it. Clearly the bluntness of the title payed off because this
particular video nearly has half a million views.
• What this says about my audience: The fact that the channel is only really focused on one
single genre shows how mainstream and sought after the genre actually is, wether it be the artists,
the trends, or just new album releases.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: The product touches on many different genres,
including rap, quite a lot of it actually just because of how big it is in the current climate, so I think
the people that enjoyed THIS video would enjoy my project as well.
Secondary Audience research
• Observation: I got 2 of the most popular examples of the 'trend' videos that can stem from one single
popular song, I find it interesting that these are both based on 2 different songs from the same artist.
This shows the easy mainstream appeal the artist has, plus how easily he can make a challenge.
• What this says about my audience: The audience clearly has an appeal to these kinds of videos,
especially when they're trending, I doubt these videos have got many views in the last few months. The
audience might like to feel involved with a trend that stemmed from an artist that they enjoy listening
to. Doing the challenge is also an easy way to grow your own social platforom, which attracts even
more of the audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: In my product I'm going to try and talk about just
why these trends get as popular as they do, and why. It's something that seems obvious but not a lot of
people can really explain why. I believe the secondary audience would want to know why they feel so
attracted to these challenges, which is how it would appeal to them.
Primary audience research
• The survey was only given out to the
primary target audience, so all the
answers that are given, were given by
17-19 year olds.
• The majority of the target audience
would consider music to be an
important part of their life. These
results are exactly something I was
hoping for, since this is something that
I was planning on bringing up as a
theory in the essay, so I can use these
results as visual representation.
• This says something about my target
audience that I already would've
guessed, over the last few years
they've become more and more
influenced and hooked by the music
that they listen to, so much to the
point that it's become a pivotal point
in their lives.
• I plan on covering why this is the case,
and why this generation is carrying on
the trend of being influenced
by music, that's been around for
decades now.
• Everyone 100% agreed with this
question, even if it's not an important
part of their own lives, they can see
and recognize that it's had a massive
impact on the world around them.
• With these results it shows that the
target audience is observant and
aware of the impacts that go on around
them, and they aren't biased, even
though it isn't as important to them,
they can acknowledge that it's having
a greater impact on the people around
them.
• I plan on using this as representation
as well, when talking about how
people have percived the impact of
music, since I believe that it's the
younger people of this generation
that have noticed the massive cultural
overhaul, when the older generations
stick with what was big at their time.
• I think the audience will appreciate
seeing a fully thought out percpective
on this subject, since it's obviously
something they've at least noticed.
• My target audience is music fans of
any kind, however, knowing they
listen to music for just more than
one thing helps support multiple of
the points I'm hoping to bring up, a
lot of people assume this
generation are only fans of music
for the sound, or the energy. Here,
however, the target audience
proves that they love listening to
music for so many different
reasons, other than just 'how it
sounds'
• This shows that a large portion of the
target audience really like a sense of
personality in their music, they want to
be able to connect to the person that
they're listening to.
• If I were to guess I'd say the person that
only likes songs for 'the flow/melody' is
also the same person that earlier on
said they wouldn't consider music an
important part of their life.
• All of the points from this survey are
going to be put into the project, and I
hope to adress just why this may be the
case, as I'll cover this in the 'personal
impact' part of the essay.
• Again, this kind of answer is something that
I honestly saw coming.
• In the last few years especially, more and
more music has come out that appeals to
so many different kinds of people, with
variying amounts of genre prefrence. Which
means there is a song for ANYONE out
there. And because my target audience is at
the age where they'll consume more music
than those older, and younger than them.
• It shows that the target audience may use a
song that has a personal meaning to
them as a way to cope with something.
• I also find it interesting that some of
the people that answered won't
always listen to a song that has a
meaning to them, like they'll save it
for something, or they have such a
strong connection to it that they
have to be in a certain mindset to
listen to it. Which backs up my point
that some people would use that
songs as a way to cope with
something.
• It shows that my audience isn't
afraid to connect with something.
• Again this goes to show the power and
impact that music has on individuals. If
you're open to having your mood
changed, then music can do that pretty
easily if you want it to, which is why
some people listen to happy songs when
their sad, and vice versa. In fact more
people listen to sad songs when they're
sad, for reassurance, and just so they
know they aren't alone.
• In fact listening to a sad song can even
put people INTO that sad mood, there's
so many different ways it works, so of
course everyone has recently been
influenced by a song, one way or the
other.
• I also want to use these results for a
short part of the project.
• For years aggressive, and more 'in your
face' music has been accused
of encouraging and promoting
violence, the 2 biggest genres most
notorious for this is, rap, and metal.
• With this I want to show that, the very
most music can do is influence
someone's mood, and at most,
their dress style and how they see
the world. I want to actually show
that music literally cannot influence
peoples actions. And these results will
actually help with that.
• The 50/50 response here actually
did surprise me a bit, I thought it
would lean much heavier to the
third option. The fact that no one
chose the first option is good
because I was hoping to bring up
the diversity in music these days
and how every teen likes at least 4
or 5 different genres. It also shows
how much music has changed,
since in the early days of music
people only really listened to the
same kind of stuff.
• These kinds of responses are shown in the
top music charts as well, it is mainly one or
two different genres, being mainly pop and
rap, sometimes both. But there's also some
other genres that are sprinkled in as well,
classical hits, rock, pop rock, and alternative.
These results are elevated by things like
Spotify making playlists for people that have
some songs they otherwise wouldn't have
known about, while also keeping things
familiar. That's why I think teens in this
generation have such a wide and expansive
music taste.
• One of the more mixed results out of the
survey, probably for a few reasons. People
look for different things with their music,
some just want background noise, some
want a personal connection, and some just
really like the energy the people making the
music give off. So it makes sense that the
results here are mixed.
• Overall it's pretty even in what the target
audience likes out of the people they actually
listen to, which isn't what I really expected, I
thought more people would lean towards
the 2nd one. So more people look up to, or
at least appreciate, the people that make the
music.
• This does, though, feed into my idea that
people listen to music for different reasons.
For example, the person who answered
number 3 might like a band like AC/DC for
their aesthetic and powerful music, while not
knowing anything about the people in the
group. Compared to people who answered
number 1, they'll know a fair amount about
the people that made the songs, while also
being able to connect to the music on a
separate level.
• So this proves that everyone wants something
different from music in general.
• Mostly an overwhelming consensus on this
one. Which doesn't surprise me too much,
the target audience is very aware on
what's going on around them, and how
people around them are being influenced
as well, and they can recognize it because
they're most likely being influenced by it as
well.
• It's good knowing that most of the audience
is able to recognize this, since music is one
of biggest things on the planet right now,
and it's good knowing that, even those that
may not listen to it as passionately
can recognize the massive impact it's
currently having in so many different
directions.
• It's difficult to know what the one person
who selected option 3 was thinking,
there's the chance that maybe they just
don't see the actual impact, meaning
they might use social media just as much
as everyone else in the target audience,
because to really see the impact you do
need to branch out onto social platforms,
from there it's honestly difficult to miss.
• The 100% yes response to this question
gives me hope that my target audience
would really like watching the product
I'm planning on making. Which is a
video essay on modern music, but I'm
planning on editing it in a very familiar
way to people in this generation, it's
more along the lines of a 'YouTube
style, essay. Those can be very hit or
miss, but as long as I take inspiration
from the best ones, then it should turn
out the exact why I have it envisioned.
• This has also shown me that the
target audience is eager to go on and
learn about how things in the media
are impacting the world around them,
and probably even impacting them
without even knowing it.
• This is also reassuring to me since I
don't just want this to be a 're-
cap' kind of video I want to have
some info and stats that may not be
known by a lot of the target audience.
So knowing they're down and okay to
learn more about the topic is
really good.
Looking at this it's easy to see that the primary
audience cares the most just about the music itself.
Although, this is probably the most divisive out of all
the results I've gotten so far. This is good for my final
project as it gives me a lot more to talk about outside
of just the music itself, I can talk about, the artists,
the culture surrounding music, and maybe even live
shows, all without my target audience tuning out and
getting board.
This also shows that the target audience isn't just
focused on the music and only that, they like to take
it a step further and look into the people that make
the music, why and how they do it, and what inspires
them to keep going in an oversaturated industry at
this point.
Some of the target audience cares more about
the atmosphere of the music and the electric
energy surrounding a live show, some of them
genuinely care about the person that they listen
to the most so they find what that artist does
outside of music actually interesting. Some of
them really care about the many different
musical cultures and trends that has come out of
the industry (something I believe a lot of music
listeners have in common).
This is all information that I can try and use in my
final script, and maybe even expand upon as the
project goes on.

Audience research

  • 2. Secondary Audience research • Observation: I selected a video from the youtube channel 'Fantano'. It's a music based youtube channel that has a lot of videos based around music discussion. This one about Taylor Swift is farily popular, mainly because it's a more negative leaning video based around a more popular artist. • What this says about my audience: The audience is more atracted to discussions surrounding mainstream popular artists, especially if it's more negative, since that draws the most attention. • How will your product appeal to this audience: I'm hoping my product will cover the more mainstream artists, and the bad side of some them, be it in their words, actions or music.
  • 3. Secondary Audience research • Observation: A more straight to the point title, that's much more on the negative side compared to the last one. This video again came from a more music focused channel, primeraly the rap scene and all the news/albums that come from it. Clearly the bluntness of the title payed off because this particular video nearly has half a million views. • What this says about my audience: The fact that the channel is only really focused on one single genre shows how mainstream and sought after the genre actually is, wether it be the artists, the trends, or just new album releases. • How will your product appeal to this audience: The product touches on many different genres, including rap, quite a lot of it actually just because of how big it is in the current climate, so I think the people that enjoyed THIS video would enjoy my project as well.
  • 4. Secondary Audience research • Observation: I got 2 of the most popular examples of the 'trend' videos that can stem from one single popular song, I find it interesting that these are both based on 2 different songs from the same artist. This shows the easy mainstream appeal the artist has, plus how easily he can make a challenge. • What this says about my audience: The audience clearly has an appeal to these kinds of videos, especially when they're trending, I doubt these videos have got many views in the last few months. The audience might like to feel involved with a trend that stemmed from an artist that they enjoy listening to. Doing the challenge is also an easy way to grow your own social platforom, which attracts even more of the audience. • How will your product appeal to this audience: In my product I'm going to try and talk about just why these trends get as popular as they do, and why. It's something that seems obvious but not a lot of people can really explain why. I believe the secondary audience would want to know why they feel so attracted to these challenges, which is how it would appeal to them.
  • 6. • The survey was only given out to the primary target audience, so all the answers that are given, were given by 17-19 year olds. • The majority of the target audience would consider music to be an important part of their life. These results are exactly something I was hoping for, since this is something that I was planning on bringing up as a theory in the essay, so I can use these results as visual representation. • This says something about my target audience that I already would've guessed, over the last few years they've become more and more influenced and hooked by the music that they listen to, so much to the point that it's become a pivotal point in their lives. • I plan on covering why this is the case, and why this generation is carrying on the trend of being influenced by music, that's been around for decades now.
  • 7. • Everyone 100% agreed with this question, even if it's not an important part of their own lives, they can see and recognize that it's had a massive impact on the world around them. • With these results it shows that the target audience is observant and aware of the impacts that go on around them, and they aren't biased, even though it isn't as important to them, they can acknowledge that it's having a greater impact on the people around them. • I plan on using this as representation as well, when talking about how people have percived the impact of music, since I believe that it's the younger people of this generation that have noticed the massive cultural overhaul, when the older generations stick with what was big at their time. • I think the audience will appreciate seeing a fully thought out percpective on this subject, since it's obviously something they've at least noticed.
  • 8. • My target audience is music fans of any kind, however, knowing they listen to music for just more than one thing helps support multiple of the points I'm hoping to bring up, a lot of people assume this generation are only fans of music for the sound, or the energy. Here, however, the target audience proves that they love listening to music for so many different reasons, other than just 'how it sounds' • This shows that a large portion of the target audience really like a sense of personality in their music, they want to be able to connect to the person that they're listening to. • If I were to guess I'd say the person that only likes songs for 'the flow/melody' is also the same person that earlier on said they wouldn't consider music an important part of their life. • All of the points from this survey are going to be put into the project, and I hope to adress just why this may be the case, as I'll cover this in the 'personal impact' part of the essay.
  • 9. • Again, this kind of answer is something that I honestly saw coming. • In the last few years especially, more and more music has come out that appeals to so many different kinds of people, with variying amounts of genre prefrence. Which means there is a song for ANYONE out there. And because my target audience is at the age where they'll consume more music than those older, and younger than them. • It shows that the target audience may use a song that has a personal meaning to them as a way to cope with something. • I also find it interesting that some of the people that answered won't always listen to a song that has a meaning to them, like they'll save it for something, or they have such a strong connection to it that they have to be in a certain mindset to listen to it. Which backs up my point that some people would use that songs as a way to cope with something. • It shows that my audience isn't afraid to connect with something.
  • 10. • Again this goes to show the power and impact that music has on individuals. If you're open to having your mood changed, then music can do that pretty easily if you want it to, which is why some people listen to happy songs when their sad, and vice versa. In fact more people listen to sad songs when they're sad, for reassurance, and just so they know they aren't alone. • In fact listening to a sad song can even put people INTO that sad mood, there's so many different ways it works, so of course everyone has recently been influenced by a song, one way or the other. • I also want to use these results for a short part of the project. • For years aggressive, and more 'in your face' music has been accused of encouraging and promoting violence, the 2 biggest genres most notorious for this is, rap, and metal. • With this I want to show that, the very most music can do is influence someone's mood, and at most, their dress style and how they see the world. I want to actually show that music literally cannot influence peoples actions. And these results will actually help with that.
  • 11. • The 50/50 response here actually did surprise me a bit, I thought it would lean much heavier to the third option. The fact that no one chose the first option is good because I was hoping to bring up the diversity in music these days and how every teen likes at least 4 or 5 different genres. It also shows how much music has changed, since in the early days of music people only really listened to the same kind of stuff. • These kinds of responses are shown in the top music charts as well, it is mainly one or two different genres, being mainly pop and rap, sometimes both. But there's also some other genres that are sprinkled in as well, classical hits, rock, pop rock, and alternative. These results are elevated by things like Spotify making playlists for people that have some songs they otherwise wouldn't have known about, while also keeping things familiar. That's why I think teens in this generation have such a wide and expansive music taste.
  • 12. • One of the more mixed results out of the survey, probably for a few reasons. People look for different things with their music, some just want background noise, some want a personal connection, and some just really like the energy the people making the music give off. So it makes sense that the results here are mixed. • Overall it's pretty even in what the target audience likes out of the people they actually listen to, which isn't what I really expected, I thought more people would lean towards the 2nd one. So more people look up to, or at least appreciate, the people that make the music. • This does, though, feed into my idea that people listen to music for different reasons. For example, the person who answered number 3 might like a band like AC/DC for their aesthetic and powerful music, while not knowing anything about the people in the group. Compared to people who answered number 1, they'll know a fair amount about the people that made the songs, while also being able to connect to the music on a separate level. • So this proves that everyone wants something different from music in general.
  • 13. • Mostly an overwhelming consensus on this one. Which doesn't surprise me too much, the target audience is very aware on what's going on around them, and how people around them are being influenced as well, and they can recognize it because they're most likely being influenced by it as well. • It's good knowing that most of the audience is able to recognize this, since music is one of biggest things on the planet right now, and it's good knowing that, even those that may not listen to it as passionately can recognize the massive impact it's currently having in so many different directions. • It's difficult to know what the one person who selected option 3 was thinking, there's the chance that maybe they just don't see the actual impact, meaning they might use social media just as much as everyone else in the target audience, because to really see the impact you do need to branch out onto social platforms, from there it's honestly difficult to miss.
  • 14. • The 100% yes response to this question gives me hope that my target audience would really like watching the product I'm planning on making. Which is a video essay on modern music, but I'm planning on editing it in a very familiar way to people in this generation, it's more along the lines of a 'YouTube style, essay. Those can be very hit or miss, but as long as I take inspiration from the best ones, then it should turn out the exact why I have it envisioned. • This has also shown me that the target audience is eager to go on and learn about how things in the media are impacting the world around them, and probably even impacting them without even knowing it. • This is also reassuring to me since I don't just want this to be a 're- cap' kind of video I want to have some info and stats that may not be known by a lot of the target audience. So knowing they're down and okay to learn more about the topic is really good.
  • 15. Looking at this it's easy to see that the primary audience cares the most just about the music itself. Although, this is probably the most divisive out of all the results I've gotten so far. This is good for my final project as it gives me a lot more to talk about outside of just the music itself, I can talk about, the artists, the culture surrounding music, and maybe even live shows, all without my target audience tuning out and getting board. This also shows that the target audience isn't just focused on the music and only that, they like to take it a step further and look into the people that make the music, why and how they do it, and what inspires them to keep going in an oversaturated industry at this point. Some of the target audience cares more about the atmosphere of the music and the electric energy surrounding a live show, some of them genuinely care about the person that they listen to the most so they find what that artist does outside of music actually interesting. Some of them really care about the many different musical cultures and trends that has come out of the industry (something I believe a lot of music listeners have in common). This is all information that I can try and use in my final script, and maybe even expand upon as the project goes on.
