4 Rules Of C h a n g e

1. Organizations Don't Change,
   People In Organizations Change.

2. People Will Change
If They See A Personal Benefit In Changing.

3. If You Change
Then Others May Change Their Behavior.

4. Top Management Is Not The Most Important Change Agent,
Middle Managers Are The Most Important Change Agent.
The Single Most Important Determinant Of Individual Performance
Is A Person's Relationship With His Manager.

      Do Something Different
“I’m On A Journey”
      A Journey Of Discovery

            Discovering

What I My … All About (My Purpose)
What I Am … Supposed To Be Doing
What I Am … Going To Do In The Future
How I Am … Supposed To Affect Others

“I’m On A Journey”

“A Journey With My Style”
           carrying
Something that ….. is in me.
   Something that ….. is me.

With what is UNIQUE to me.
     Not a copy of another.

I am UNIQUE…..We are all UNIQUE

AFFECTING

YOUR INFLUENCE
   BEING MADE
WHERE YOU WORK
Everywhere You Go

AFFECTING
       THE ATMOSPHERE AROUND YOU

       We’re Led Down
        “The Path”?

Always Working For Other People
Our Supervisors
        Our Managers
                Our Organization
                            14
We’re Led Down The Path”?

     Always Being Directed
What To Do & How To Do Things

Being in a trap without knowing it

  Not understanding our influence
Not taking a stand or position

                                15
We’re Led Down The Path?

Always Being Influenced By Others
  Not consciously influencing others

Hopefully Being Protected By
   Our Supervisors, Our Managers,
          Our Organization

                                    16
When????
WHEN DO WE . . . . . REALIZE & STOP
• REALIZE we’re grown up, able to lead & influence?
• STOP depending on others to lead & influence?

WHEN ARE YOU . . . . . THE ONE
• The one to lead and influence?
• The one to protect others?

WHEN WILL YOU . . . . . BE THE ONE
• Be the one to
            Affect The Atmosphere Around You
In Your Way, With Your Style?
                                        17
What am I talking about?

                     EXAMPLE 1
               WHEN LEADERS THAT
      LEAD, DIRECT, PROTECT, AND INFLUENCE,
                RETIRE OR MOVE ON.
           How is the atmosphere affected?

> When someone takes a leader’s place…..
  How is the atmosphere affected?
> When the cycle of personnel change continues…..
  How is the atmosphere affected?
                 MY EXPERIENCE….
                                           18
MY EXPERIENCE….

• Leaders Retired. I and others remained.
Change continued. New leaders came and went.

• I RECOGNIZED THAT
Those who were with us started something that I liked.
They created an atmosphere that I was able to fit into.

NOW, THEY WERE GONE.
It Was Up To Me And Those Around Me
To Affect The Atmosphere Around Us.

                                               19
MY EXPERIENCE….

   I told my co-workers:

   The atmosphere was
 not being provided for us
         as it was.

We now had to provide
   the atmosphere.
                             20

          THE MANTLE of

what it should be and could be ?
                                21
What Can You Do?

          Example 1
Sharing Someone Else’s Experience
          “A story”
   “A personal experience”
      how relationships
         can change
  an atmosphere and events.

WHEN THINGS STAY THE SAME

• WE MAINTAIN TRADITIONAL PRACTICES
     Whether Good Or Bad.

• Times when…..
    Maintaining Traditional Practices are GOOD.

• Times when…..
    Maintaining Traditional Practices are BAD.

Tradition may limit learning & progress.
                                         28
WHEN THINGS STAY THE SAME

• You’ll always BE where you’ve always BEEN
If you always GO where you’ve always GONE
Not going places you’ve never been
           That’s going in circles

• You’ll always BE where you’ve always BEEN
If you always DO what you’ve always DONE
       Habits
Doing the same things over and over
Not trying new things or new ways

                                              29
WHEN THINGS STAY THE SAME

 You’ll always KNOW whom you’ve always KNOWN
If you’re always WITH whom you’ve always been WITH
That’s a closed circle of acquaintances
       That’s not meeting new people

 Tradition can make “THE TRUTH” to be “UNHEARD”.
“We’ve always done it that way.”
We miss profits and easier ways of doing things.
We miss the relationships that can happen.
      We miss new experiences.
       We miss success.

  2. HOW MANY KNEW CHARLE JENKINS?
  3. APPA’S LEADERSHIP MESSAGE Something’s going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is it???????????? VOICE OF LEADERSHIP WITHIN APPA in the last decade, since 1998 Charlie Jenkins, Lander Medlin, Glenn Smith, Hal Peterson, Phil Cox, Fred Gratto, Jack Miller, James Canton, Allen Dessoff, Laura Long In early 1998, Douglas Christensen announced the launching of the APPAs Leadership Skills Academy to emphasize 3 core skill areas: Personal Effectiveness, Organizational Effectiveness, and Personal Skills In Leadership. To create the skills needed to deal with change. I’ve read the articles on leadership that have been published in the Facilities Manager since 1998. They are awesome. Charlie passed away in Dec 2004. Is someone taking his place to carry on the message. Is someone going to continue “the voice of leadership” within our ranks. I VOLUNTEER!!!! WHOLE HEARTEDLY.
