1. face
How does my media product
represent particular social
groups?
2. age
My magazine’s target audience
was ages 16-25, so I decided to
use models that were in that age
group, so that they would
represent them well, and also
appeal to my target audience. I
also wanted to challenge the
stereotypical image of teenagers
that is believed by society. For
example, I chose for the models
to dress and act differently
from what society expects when
they hear the word ‘teenagers’.
Instead of hoodies, and menacing
attitudes they wore jackets and
fedoras, and held a more
brooding and ‘deep’ attitude
rather than an intimidating one.
I also made the models use
fairly passive stances and poses
in the photos, as it represents
teens as cool and casual, rather
than antisocial and
intimidating.
3. gender
The majority of my magazine’s
target audience was male, but
they also wanted to be seen as
‘different’ and ‘unique’, which
is what I showed on the cover. I
chose to represent the male
gender differently. Instead of
having the model pose in a
manly, aggressive pose, I chose
for him to take a more
‘thoughtful’ pose, as if he was
thinking deeply. I also edited
it so that he appeared black and
white. This, combined with the
pastel colour background creates
a fairly ‘soft’ image of
masculinity, which is a very
emergent ideology.
Despite all this, the fact he is
a man also gives the magazine a
residual ideology.
4. social group
Courier New
I decided to use a fairly
residual ideology for the
presentation of social groups in
my magazine. The models in my
magazine are dressed typically
for the alternative genre, and
they are photographed looking
away from the camera in some
shots, which connotes
rebellion, a trait found commonly
in many music magazines. The font
chosen in the article also
presents a fairly residual
ideology, as the serif font
connotes an ‘edgy’ image. Which
is also a very common image in
music magazines, especially non-
mainstream ones
5. race
The fact that both models I used were
white shows that a very residual
ideology was used. The fact that
other races were overlooked and not
represented shows that other races
and ethnicities were not considered.
This shows how dominant ideologies
are an unconscious process, as I did
not even consider trying to assemble
a diverse cast.
