The Sticky Campus roadshow

Editor's Notes

  1. The notion of a ‘sticky campus’ is a place where students will want to stay even though they have no formal teaching sessions to attend. It’s important because it creates a culture, because it’s been identified as incredibly important for integrating students from different ethnic and social backgrounds – which address the statutory requirements universities have for widening access and promoting diversity amongst their student cohorts. It’s important because for a campus to become ‘sticky’, it requires investment in high quality spaces with connecting technology that together create this sense of belonging, and which initially ooze a ‘WOW’ factor and encourage students to choose that university for their studies. The 2017 Student Academic Experience Survey that was jointly published in June 2017 by HEPI and the HEA calls for “all higher education institutions to explore the “sticky campus” concept to ensure all students are fully integrated.” Architects and designers are all talking about “the Sticky Campus” in their promotional materials.
  2. Graham Coath, Business Development Manager for Notetalker, will be talking shortly about inclusion and accessibility in all learning spaces, including active learning spaces such as the Sticky Campus Roadshow. The slides for his talk will be available too.
  3. I have been involved in collaboration for corporates and HE for over 10 years, have two books published by Pearson, and my education book published in 2014 has directly led to the Digital Classroom Roadshow, which will now become the Sticky Campus Roadshow. In September 2017, the follow-up book, Creating the Digital Campus, with some great contributions from people who hosted and attended a roadshow. My experience with EdTech in higher education started in 2005 with the integration of collaborative technology in Visual Learning Lab at the University of Nottingham. One of the Hefce CETL projects.
  4. It may seem strange to start a presentation with the image of a retail shop. Technology is clearly disrupting education, but there is perhaps no better example of technology disrupting a sector than retail. The growth of on-line shopping has resulted in many high street failures, and Simon Carter, a high-end gentleman's outfitter, has recognised the need for walk-in stores to offer a different experience to its on-line shop.
  5. Simon Carter’s retail shops offer the visitor works of art and items of historical and architectural interest. The retail items are presented in a different way to many traditional shops. Just think of the shirts on sale in Marks and Spencer – there is very little difference between retail store and the on-line experience. On campus education needs to offer students a different experience to distance learning, otherwise there will come a time when potentially the Apples and Googles of this world will do a much better job of on-line education. And with the recent announcement that the University of London and Imperial College London in conjunction with Coursera will offer degree-level on-line courses, probably means that it won’t be too long before on-line commercialises even further. University isn’t just about the academic education, for many it can be a life-changing experience in many different ways. An experience and opportunities that on-line cannot offer.
  6. For modern active learning pedagogies that engage a wide range of abilities, rooms like this one are no longer fit for purpose at any level of education. This room – with a capacity for 49 students to be didactically taught – was chosen to be transformed into an Active Learning Studio that you will see on the following slide. Its utilisation was around 22%, and rarely did it host a full capacity.
  7. Reduced capacity – 49 – 36 – but massively increased occupation levels during taught hours, plus usage lunchtimes, evenings, weekends. Academic Development project – but supported across the campus Too successful? What should have been valuable as an academic development space for 12 months, was put on to the central timetable after just 8 weeks. Purpose – to create spaces where information is replaced by understanding thru high-quality interactions – tutor to students, student to student Easy and Intuitive
  8. DRIVING CHANGE All universities are being awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze for their teaching quality. Part of the assessment is on the quality of teachings spaces that the student engagement they generate, and the student outcomes on learning gain, employability skills, and more, which are all helped by these environments.
  9. Why are we here? Many universities host technology days when they are looking for new solutions. Having a wide array of technologies that are not creating a realistic environment of how they would be deployed in a learning space, is less than ideal. Creating an environment that is fully functioning is a great way to showcase how new technologies and technical furniture can transform spaces and enable active learning pedagogies.
  10. Instead of events with multiple competing vendors, the roadshow promotes an environment that is fully configured and connected, so that people can experience a solution that will give them the opportunity to make much better informed decisions about their own requirements. For this to work, a single technology has to be used, but we point out at each session that there is no intention to put forward this configuration as the blueprint for all to follow. This image shows the Sticky Campus Roadshow for 2018. We have different tables to highlight individual functionality: Height adjustable for incorporating wheelchair users. Folding, for when the furniture needs to be removed from the room to reconfigure for examinations. We have even sourced chairs with castors that can be nested when removed to provide a examination-standard configuration.
  11. In addition to active learning being used in formal spaces, there needs to be facilities for self-directed learning in small groups in libraries, social spaces, etc. We are now starting to see fit-for-purpose large cohort spaces that can transition from didactic to collaborative without any repurposing of furniture. The Kramer VIA wireless collaboration technology we selected for the roadshow requires an App – available for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook and Windows phone. Once the free app has been installed, it can be used in any of these scenarios. Having one solution that can be accessed in any location with a single app helps with technology adoption by students, staff and the institution itself. Learning Analytics: The Kramer VIA system can capture usage data from student (and staff) connectivity. This will indicate levels of usage/engagement, whether individuals or groups of students are active together and in which locations there is excessive demand or underutilisation. In addition to student engagement statistics, this data can help IT/AV and Estates plan future provision.
  12. The Sticky Campus Roadshow introduces a new collaborative lecture theatre design with many advantages over current developments. Being able to conduction front of class and group work in all learning spaces is become increasingly important, and these new larger cohort spaces need to support the same pedagogical scenarios as smaller digital classrooms and individual hub spaces in libraries, etc. This new arrangement for large cohort spaces has been developed by Ferco Seating, building on their heritage of equipping higher education spaces to a high standard.
  13. In fact, not it’s not just networks, estates, and academic development that are important. All these inputs are necessary for learning spaces projects to be successful. Having the roadshow resident on campus for four weeks, provides opportunities for many different stakeholders to come together and better understand what is required to make these new spaces work fully.
  14. A live example for the need to better inform architects on the new arrangements for active learning. This space has a non-negotiable requirement to accommodate 96 students for active learning with wireless technology, and could also be configured to be two rooms of 48 students. The architect proposed that students would be in groups of six around circular tables. How is each group expected to share information between them on a round table that doesn’t have any group screen technology? A layout with team tables incorporating screen technology was created, but it wouldn’t accommodate 96 students, and sight lines across the room, especially when opened out as one room.
  15. This isn’t the same space, but clearly shows the limitations of round tables when sharing collaborative technology is being used.
  16. Duncan Peberdy devised a solution whereby two technology tables would be arranged in pairs, with each team having access to a display housed between the tables. There are two screens back-to-back between each set of tables, which can be lowered or raised electronically. This configuration supports 96 students whilst maintaining the circulation space for the academic to support active learning, and can still be partitioned into one large space or two smaller ones as required.
  17. To come up with this configuration, I started with the student experience, and worked backwards to develop a way to deliver this. If the space is not a good experience for students, then it should not be developed.
  18. A typical active learning classroom would not have the variety of tables used in the roadshow. This is a typical layout which, in my opinion would benefit from having tables and matching chairs in a range of easily identifiable colours.
  19. Some examples of previous roadshows in full flow. University of Dundee – Workshop with guest speaker in June 2017 Participants experience a new environment, road-test the technology and collaboration, which after 2.5 hours makes an indelible impression on them. Most go an buy for themselves.
  20. Heriot-Watt – Edinburgh – May 2016. Almost every Scottish university and colleges attended one of 4 workshops, again with contributions from a guest speaker. This was supported by Streamtec and they got lots of business as a result.
  21. UWE January 2016. The new Faculty of Business and Law that opened a few months ago now features 8 active learning rooms, and every teaching space is equipped with Kramer VIA. This new building really has become a ‘sticky building’
  22. Ulster University. An internal workshop on ‘flipping the classroom’ which was run at least four times during their hosting. Their VC was so impressed, they purchased the classroom so that it could not leave! They have a new campus for 15000 students under construction and this is information their decisions on spaces.
  23. We chose Kramer VIA for the roadshows as they support a comprehensive range of connectivity options, and the same single App connects to all their hardware options, meaning that just one App is required to connect right across the campus, from social spaces, collaborative classrooms, to large cohort collaborative rooms. The App is free, intuitive, and allows students not only to present information, but to co-create on any document, CAD-File, or other digital content.
  24. To download and install the App for a Windows Laptop or MacBook, open a web browser and navigate direct to the table name. (Put directly into the browser, do not ‘search’)
  25. The features available in the App depend on the device that you are connecting with. From a Windows laptop or MacBook, you only need the Kramer App features, as you can fully multitask with these devices. From an iOS or Android device, unless you fully mirror your device outside of the App, you have to complete certain tasks from within the App; web browsing, access to on-line storage, etc.,
  26. Next to the main ‘Present’ / ‘Stop Presenting’ icon are two useful features. Freeze keeps the current image on display, allowing you to search for a file or view emails, for example, without these operations being ‘cast’ to the team screen. When you want to carry on displaying your content, simply un-freeze. You could also click “Stop Presenting” to stop you material being shown on the team screen. If you are the only person casting information to the screen, you can click on the Do Not Disturb (DND) button, and this will stop another connected device from being able to cast their screen contents.
  27. Room Control panel Image. One press selects the source of information – the teaching lectern or any team table. A second click determines the distribution. To the front of class screen (where any content from any student table can be controlled in real time for digital critiques with the whole class), or to all the student tables. In this example, we have an Epson visualiser connected, but it could be any content. There is also a button that blanks all the screens in the room if the tutor wants everyone's attention.
  28. Key benefits of the Kramer VIA system facilitating wireless collaboration in a variety of learning spaces across the campus.
  29. Previously, academics utilised whatever technology was provided for them. Now, those responsible for academic development are determining the systems that provide the best solutions for student engagement and achieving the desired learning outcomes. There is also an emphasis on creating spaces that provide all students with reasonable adjustments so that any learning differences do not hold them back in their studies. The Jisc Digital Tracker has reported that technology in place is not being utilised to anything near its potential.
  31. The benefits are not just for students. There are many advantages for staff and the universities.
  32. All these technology-rich active learning spaces provide analogue writing surfaces for students, like these mobile glass boards from TeacherBoards. They are used extensively, and every student has a device that can capture the analogue writing into their digital world.
  33. The Digital Classroom Roadshow was conceived to improve the traditional way in which universities engaged with new and emerging technologies. Providing more than just a short demo, site visit (when the facility is typically not being used), or an exhibition introduction with the associated information overload. The Digital Classroom evangelises new active learning methodologies, provides a proper evaluation environment, which leads to universities equipping many learning spaces with VIA technologies.
