"Encourage information professionals, librarians and research support staff to become familiar with online training materials and methods to support researchers in achieving Research Data Management best practice"
We have delivered several types of session to researchers – from PhDs to PIs; this session will cover one delivery – the ULTRA session.
We have worked with research support and IT staff. However, the train the trainers emphasis will be on RDMRose which is aimed at information professionals.
Part of core University training.
Compulsory for new academic staff unless granted exemption. Mainly early career researchers in first staff post.
Face to face can be very effective – like all training, it depend on part on the mix of people in the room.
Important for researchers at the point they are applying for grants – more detailed information about writing data management plans and thinking about costing.
Also, when they are mid-project – don’t forget to obtain consent, collect metadata, apply good RDM practice, think about data appraisal – what to keep, where to keep it etc. etc.
Get enthused about citizen science! Think about potential audiences in a broad and creative way.
Researchers in different disciplines have things to learn from each other.
Reflective learning – worked better with some than others. Difficult if lots of unknowns about role.
Select which bits are most relevant.
Some general information for awareness.
Reflective exercises.
Inquiry based learning – participants got most out of the course when applied in practice e.g. make contact with and talk to a researcher about their research.
Encourages librarians to adopt a researcher mindset and understand the researcher’s perspective more fully (and other practitioners).
