Abstract Feature-based image matching is an important characteristic in many computer based applications such as object recognition, 3D stereo reconstruction, structure-from-motion and images stitching. The Knowledge Exchange has published the report ‘𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙚: 𝙈𝙤𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙨𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥’. The report presents how the Openness Profile can help address existing gaps in the assessment of Open Science in relation to issues such as: • The need to accelerate the transition to Open - operationalising and normalising open scholarship practices has proven challenging. • Conflicting ambitions combined with strong network effects that punish those who deviate from sector norms around research assessment and practice. • The economic nature of challenges, either financial or relating to actors’ incentives, associated with the transition to open scholarship. • Distortion of researcher behaviour due to over-reliance on traditional metrics. • Underfunded and underdeveloped funder grant information systems. Poor adoption of PIDs and little to no interoperability with downstream stakeholders. • Key contributors to the academic knowledge ecosystem being under-recognised • Research being organised with ‘well defined’ rules that do not include ‘open’-related criteria. The potential to improve open research evaluation practice as well as the requirements to implement the Openness Profile are addressed, including recommendations for stakeholders.

The Open University UK (OU) has been implementing learning analytics and learning design on a large scale since 2012. With its 170+ students and 4000+ teaching staff, the OU has been at the forefront of testing, implementing, and evaluating the impact of learning analytics and learning design on students outcome and retention. A range of reviews and scholarly repositories (e.g., Web of Science) indicate that the OU is the largest contributor to academic output in learning analytics and learning design in the world. However, despite the large uptake of learning analytics at the OU there are a range of complex issues in terms of buy-in from staff, data infrastructures, ethics and privacy, student engagement, and perhaps most importantly how to make sense of big and small data in a complex organisation like the OU. The real-world impact of research is gaining much attention across the international Higher Education sector. Funding agencies, government organisations and community groups are seeking evidence that research initiatives are delivering impact beyond contributions to academia. Researchers, practitioners, educators, learning designers and developers require a good understanding of research impact, and associated terminology, to articulate the real-world benefits of technology-enabled initiatives. There are three good reasons to understand research impact in a Higher Education context. Firstly, comprehending the language of research impact facilitates meaningful discussion with research stakeholders. Secondly, recognising and communicating the real-world impact of an initiative affirms the ‘so what’ factor of a research project. And thirdly, demonstrating research impact, rather than reporting research outputs, is becoming more important in funding applications and project documentation. This paper concludes with a brief review of assessment frameworks developed to evaluate the real-world impact of Higher Education research.

By Professor Bart Rienties, Head of Academic Professional Development, Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, UK Abstract The Open University UK (OU) has been implementing learning analytics since 2014, starting with one or two modules to its current practice of large-scale implementation across all its 400+ modules and 170.000+ students and 4000+ teaching staff. While a range of reviews (e.g., Adenij, 2019) and scholarly repositories (e.g., Web of Science) indicate that the OU is the largest contributor to academic output in learning analytics in the world, behind the flashy publications and practitioner outputs there are a range of complex issues in terms of ethics and privacy, data infrastructures, buy-in from staff, student engagement, and how to make sense of big data in a complex organisation like the OU. Based upon large-scale big data research we found some interesting tensions in both design and educational theory, such as: – 69% of engagement by students on a week by week basis is determined by how teachers are designing courses (i.e., learning design and instructional design indeed directly influence behaviour and cognition), but many teachers seem reluctant to change their learning design based upon data of what works and what does not work (e.g., making sense of data, agency); – How teachers engage with predictive learning analytics (PLA) significantly improves student outcomes, but only a minority of teachers actually use PLA; – Some disadvantaged groups engage more actively in OU courses, but nonetheless perform lower than non-disadvantaged students. During this CELDA keynote I would like to share some of my own reflections of how the OU has implemented learning analytics, and how these insights are helping towards a stronger evidence-base for data-informed change. Furthermore, by sharing some of the lessons learned from implementing learning analytics on a large scale I hope to provide some dos and don’ts in terms of how you might consider to use data in your own practice and context.

This review provides an understanding of and justification for the transdisciplinary research(TDR) as an action-oriented research approach in higher education that promotes sustainabledevelopment in society. Current studies on TDR show that today more than ever before, there is a shifting landscape of knowledge generation in contemporary societies owing to the nature and number of challenges society is seized with which among others include political strife, hunger, unemployment, diseases, and urban migration. Little attests to the fact that societal problems have become too complex for one point of view as provided for by disciplinary research. The need therefore to make research relevant and contextual in addressing these complex reallifechallenges facing society today cannot be overemphasized when looked at in the context of sustainable development. This review argues that contemporary sustainable development challenges, complex as they are, demand cooperation between specialists and social actors with diverse backgrounds of knowledge and experiencesto be able to effectively track the challenges and come up with practical and contextualized solutions. This review employs document analysis to generate a deeper understanding as well as to proffer a cogent argument for the need for transdisciplinary research in solving contemporary socio-ecological challengesthroughco-production of knowledge in concrete real-life contexts.

Context. WASP-76 b has been a recurrent subject of study since the detection of a signature in high-resolution transit spectroscopy data indicating an asymmetry between the two limbs of the planet. The existence of this asymmetric signature has been confirmed by multiple studies, but its physical origin is still under debate. In addition, it contrasts with the absence of asymmetry reported in the infrared (IR) phase curve. Aims. We provide a more comprehensive dataset of WASP-76 b with the goal of drawing a complete view of the physical processes at work in this atmosphere. In particular, we attempt to reconcile visible high-resolution transit spectroscopy data and IR broadband phase curves. Methods. We gathered 3 phase curves, 20 occultations, and 6 transits for WASP-76 b in the visible with the CHEOPS space telescope. We also report the analysis of three unpublished sectors observed by the TESS space telescope (also in the visible), which represents 34 phase curves. Results. WASP-76 b displays an occultation of 260±11 and 152±10 ppm in TESS and CHEOPS bandpasses respectively. Depending on the composition assumed for the atmosphere and the data reduction used for the IR data, we derived geometric albedo estimates that range from 0.05 ± 0.023 to 0.146 ± 0.013 and from <0.13 to 0.189 ± 0.017 in the CHEOPS and TESS bandpasses, respectively. As expected from the IR phase curves, a low-order model of the phase curves does not yield any detectable asymmetry in the visible either. However, an empirical model allowing for sharper phase curve variations offers a hint of a flux excess before the occultation, with an amplitude of ∼40 ppm, an orbital offset of ∼−30◦ , and a width of ∼20◦ . We also constrained the orbital eccentricity of WASP-76 b to a value lower than 0.0067, with a 99.7% confidence level. This result contradicts earlier proposed scenarios aimed at explaining the asymmetry observed in high-resolution transit spectroscopy. Conclusions. In light of these findings, we hypothesise that WASP-76 b could have night-side clouds that extend predominantly towards its eastern limb. At this limb, the clouds would be associated with spherical droplets or spherically shaped aerosols of an unknown species, which would be responsible for a glory effect in the visible phase curves.

Understanding circumstellar disks is of prime importance in astrophysics, however, their birth process remains poorly constrained due to observational and numerical challenges. Recent numerical works have shown that the small-scale physics, often wrapped into a sub-grid model, play a crucial role in disk formation and evolution. This calls for a combined approach in which both the protostar and circumstellar disk are studied in concert. Aims. We aim to elucidate the small scale physics and constrain sub-grid parameters commonly chosen in the literature by resolving the star-disk interaction. Methods. We carry out a set of very high resolution 3D radiative-hydrodynamics simulations that self-consistently describe the collapse of a turbulent dense molecular cloud core to stellar densities. We study the birth of the protostar, the circumstellar disk, and its early evolution (< 6 yr after protostellar formation). Results. Following the second gravitational collapse, the nascent protostar quickly reaches breakup velocity and sheds its surface material, thus forming a hot (∼ 103 K), dense, and highly flared circumstellar disk. The protostar is embedded within the disk, such that material can flow without crossing any shock fronts. The circumstellar disk mass quickly exceeds that of the protostar, and its kinematics are dominated by self-gravity. Accretion onto the disk is highly anisotropic, and accretion onto the protostar mainly occurs through material that slides on the disk surface. The polar mass flux is negligible in comparison. The radiative behavior also displays a strong anisotropy, as the polar accretion shock is shown to be supercritical whereas its equatorial counterpart is subcritical. We also f ind a remarkable convergence of our results with respect to initial conditions. Conclusions. These results reveal the structure and kinematics in the smallest spatial scales relevant to protostellar and circumstellar disk evolution. They can be used to describe accretion onto regions commonly described by sub-grid models in simulations studying larger scale physics.
