Design Think Social Problems

Notas do Editor

  1. Welcome!
  2. So today we are going to learn about Design Thinking, a process that allows one to find desirable solutions to complex problems. We will use this tool today to solve one of the complex social problems. let’s look at some example of social problems and how design thinking process was used to create innovative solutions.
  3. In developing countries, mortality for infants is particularly high because incubators are extremely rare. Most hospitals and clinics in developing countries don’t have enough incubators to meet the tremendous need. Embrace, designed using the principles of design thinking at Stanford’s d.school, is a easy-to-use medical device that costs 99 percent less than a traditional baby incubator and has the potential to save millions of newborns in developing countries.
  4. Gyanu: When I was growing up in the rural village of Nepal, i saw my own sisters and mother struggling to fetch water daily from a nearby stream. The jars to carry water were heavy and uncomfortable. Similar to my mother and sisters, many women and children in rural parts across Asia and Africa make daily trips to fetch water. Hippo roller, is a barrel shaped container for carrying water faster than traditional methods saving women time which they can now invest in entrepreneurial activities and children can invest more time into their studies. . Both of these solutions were developed using design thinking technique.
  5. So, what is design thinking? It is about empathy, define, ideate, prototype, test. We will be working pairs throughout the design project so please go ahead and introduce yourself to the person across from you.
  6. Today we will be dealing with “Obesity”, one of the complex social problems. Obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, usually 20% or more over an individual's ideal body weight. Obesity is associated with increased risk of illness, disability, and death. But why is this a social problem? According to Gallup survey 2015, over the span of 7 years the number of overweight American adults increased by 6.1 million. The cost towards obesity was estimated to be $305 billion in 2014. The problem of Obesity is becoming the top health threat in the country.
  7. In an article written by Janet Currie, “Do Fast Food Restaurants Contribute to Obesity?” one of the major causes of obesity is the consumption of fast foods. So, our main goal today is to address the problem of consuming fast foods.. Before we begin this design project, I would like all of you to take a minute to think about the last time you had fast food. In particular, reflect on the time you made a decision to eat fast food and your experiences until you were done eating..l
  8. Before we begin, I’m going to warn you that this is going to be fast paced. It is going to feel like that we are not giving you enough time. But we are asking you to trust us and lean into this experience and hopefully the experience we have together will allow us to have a more rich conversation and debrief at the end of this workshop. Instead of just telling you about design thinking, we want to immediately have you I jump right in and experience it for yourself. Let’s go!
  9. Please turn to first page of your packet. In human-centered design we do not design a solution for ourselves. Your challenge is to solve the problem of fast-food consumption for your partner. The first and the most important step of solving a problem for someone is to gain empathy for that person. One way to do this is to have a good conversation, which means you are going to interview your partner. From now on we are going to refer to the person on the left as partner A and the person to the right as partner B. Partner A will have 3 minutes to interview Partner B, and then we will tell you when to switch. As a starting point ask them about their last fast-food experience. Why did they make the decision? What made them choose fast-food over healthier options? In the left hand side please take note of things you find interesting or surprising. Let’s go.
  10. In step 2, you need to dig deeper into your partner's story. Follow up on the insights that stood out to you during the interview. Your goal is to build upon those insights and this can be best achieved by digging into feelings, emotions and experiences that are somehow related to consuming fast foods. Ask “why” often, to discover more ideas to your partner’s response. Each of you have 2 mins to ask more questions. Let’s start with partner A and we will tell you to switch when 2 mins are over.
  11. In section 3, you will have to synthesize your learning into two groups: your partner’s goals and wishes, and insights you discovered. Use verbs to express the goals and wishes. For example your partner’s goal to solve the problem of consuming fast food might be to cook at home. On the other hand, insights are discoveries that you might be able to leverage when creating solutions. These are the needs related to consuming fast food. Think about both physical and emotional needs. For example, you discovered that your partner does not have healthy source of food in the nearby grocery store. Take help from the notes of the interview while you work on this section. (3 mins)
  12. In section 4, select the most compelling goal and most interesting insight to articulate a problem statement. This is your point of view. This is the statement that you’re going to address with your design, so make sure it’s juicy and actionable! It should feel like a problem worth tackling! As an example, a point-of-view might be: Janice needs a way to have access to healthy food because she thinks there are no healthy food stores nearby. You have 2 mins to create your problem statement.
  13. Section 5 is the time for idea generation. In this section, first rewrite the problem statement from section 4 at the top of the page. And then come up with at least 5 radical ideas to address your partner’s problem statement. GO FOR QUANTITY. Remember this is time for idea generation, not evaluation—you can evaluate your ideas later. Remember to be VISUAL—use words just when necessary to call out details. See if you can come up with 5 more idea if you are done with your first 5 ideas. You have 5 mins to sketch your solutions.
  14. Now it’s time to share your sketches with your partner! Partner A, share your sketches with Partner B first, and then we will tell you to switch after three minutes. This is not just about testing your ideas. This is another opportunity to learn more about your partner’s feelings and worldview. Fight the urge to explain and defend your ideas—see what they make of them! Spend the time listening to your partner's reactions and questions.
  15. In section 7, we will reflect and generate a new solution. Take a moment to consider what you have learned both about your partner, and about the solutions you generated. From this new understanding of your partner, sketch a new idea. This solution may be a variation on an idea from before or something completely new. You are still addressing the problem statement that your partner articulated. Try to provide as much detail and color around the idea as possible. How might this solution fit into the context of your partner’s experience? When and how might they handle or encounter your solution? You have 3 mins.
  16. In section 8, You will be creating a protottype of your solution. You should not simply make a scale model of the idea to explain it. You should create an experience that your partner can react to. If your solution is a service or a system, create a scenario that allows your partner to experience this innovation. Use whatever materials are available to you (where the materials are)—including space! Be scrappy and quick—you only have 6 minutes!!
  17. Now you’re going to have the opportunity to share your prototype with your partner. Validation of the prototype is not the point—it should be an artifact that facilitates a new, targeted conversation. When you test, LET GO of your prototype, physically and emotionally. Your prototype is NOT PRECIOUS, but the feedback and new insights it draws out are. Jot down what your partner liked and didn’t like about the idea, as well as questions that emerged and new ideas that came up. Partner A share your solution with partner B and collect feedback, and after 3 mins we will call switch.b
  18. So here we come to the end of our activities and it’s time for debrief. Grab your prototypes and set them on the table in the middle of the room. We’re going to huddle around and see what innovations you’ve created for your partners!” “Who had a partner who created something that you really like?” “Who sees something they are curious to learn more about?” “How did talking to your partner inform your design?” “How did testing and getting feedback impact your final design?” “What was the most challenging part of the process for you?” “How do you see this relating problems that you are passionate to solve?”
  19. Go forward and innovate!!!
