New York State Organization = New York State Socialist Party

Political Position = Left-wing (Economic + Social)

Ideology = Democratic Socialism
Historical Background
The predecessor to SPUSA was the 'Socialist Party of America' [1901 - 1972], which
dissolved on December 31, 1972.
It was the primarily the result of deepening divides and a diminishing political
influence. The party had not nominated a presidential candidate for 16 years at that
point.
The dissipation produced three new groups.

These three groups were the
●

'Social Democrats, USA' (relatively right)

●

'Democratic Socialists of America' (relatively centre)

●

'Socialist Party USA' (relatively left).

The latter would be the legitimate continuation of the historical Socialist Party.
The 'Socialist Party USA' was the minority in the split.
Historical Background Continued

The only group classified as a political parties from the split, the SPUSA
recommenced nominations for political office, whilst reorienting their
focus on local and grassroots politics.

Additionally, they inherited their predecessor's dedication to labour
politics and advocation of the democratic socialist alternative, proposed
to radically augment the living and working conditions of the national and
world population.

Perceiving the United States' electoral process as prohibitive, debarring,
and oftenly undemocratic, the Socialist Party observes the quadrennial
event as an opportunity to educate the voting public on democratic
socialism and the positions of the party.
Historical Background Continued

The Socialist Party has elected a candidate every year since 1976, excluding
1984 where they endorsed the nominee of the 'Citizens Party'.
Their most successful run was in 1976, where they procured an approximate 0.1%
of the vote.

Although the SPUSA has noted receiving an influx of younger voters, the party
continues to be rather insignificant despite their strong image, presence, and
bygone history of significance. In the left-wing to far-left of American
politics; the 'Party of Socialism and Liberation', 'Socialist Workers Party',
'Peace and Freedom Party', and 'Green Party' beget more substantial support.
Philosophy Regarding Government
The Socialist Party advocates the radical
substitution of conventional government and
capitalism with a new social and economic order of
democratic socialism, attained through
international democratic revolutions that will
dissolve the structured inequality and dismantle
power derived from profit, corruption, and
political/social domination that serves the
interests of the corporations and ruling class.
This would be executed in a manner that
fundamentally alters the structure and quality of
economic, political, and personal relations in
society.
Philosophy Regarding Government Continued
A new system of production would be
cooperatively and democratically owned by
workers and consumers, with a focus on
quality, human need, and mutual benefit.
Cultivation of resources would be rationally
configured upon the needs of humanity.
Community residents would control their own
local entities and their own lives,
establishing a radical and secular political
and economic consensus democracy. This would
assert civil liberties for all. A new
malleable society would be composed as to be
fit for all humanity, establishing
egalitarianism across all aspects of life,
eliminating oppression, inequality,
exploitation, class, organized greed, forprofit wars, and environmental degradation.
Philosophy Regarding Government Continued
All of this can be achieved through
widespread comprehension,
consciousness, and participation
through the direct action and unity of
the working people, and not performed
by a political and/or economic elite
purportedly acting on behalf of the
people. The working class will
ascertain its own future from its own
virtues, a socialist future that can
benefit all of humankind, establish
equality for all, and prioritize human
rights before property rights.
Logo/Mascot
The SPUSA logo is a
modernization of the
historical 'Socialist Party
of America' logo.
The logo represents
international proletarian
unity, discarding divisive
bias such as nationality or
race. The slogan is an
excerpt from Karl Marx's “The
Communist Manifestio”. It has
become a popular and common
left-wing political slogan.
Military Spending
The United States is the sole remaining global superpower. The U.S. government uses its overwhelming
military power to consolidate its strategic hold over the entire world and to defend and advance the
interests of U.S. owned corporations as they exploit the working people and natural resources of the
entire planet. We stand in total opposition to U.S. imperialism and the current “war on terror” which
is just another subterfuge for U.S. imperialism.

We call for the closing of all U.S. military facilities at home and abroad that train foreign
military and paramilitary personnel.
We call for the United States to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Iraq and
Afghanistan.
We call for an end to the U.S. occupation of the province of Guantanamo, Cuba.
We call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank-East Jerusalem and Gaza, and an end to
all U.S. aid to Israel, as a precondition for peace.
We support an immediate cutoff of all U.S. military aid to Colombia, and all other recipients.
We call for the abolition of the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and all
other institutions of covert warfare.
We stand for unconditional disarmament by the United States.
We call for an international treaty outlawing all weapons of mass destruction, including the use of
depleted uranium in conventional weapons.
We call for an immediate 50% cut in the military budget, followed by additional cuts, with the aim
of rapidly reducing the military budget to less than 10% of its current level, with the "peace dividend"
directed to essential social services and to the cost of cleaning up contaminated military sites.
We call for the disbanding of NATO and all other aggressive military alliances, and the closing of
all overseas bases.
We call for an end to U.S. arms sales throughout the world.
We call for the U.S. to pay off its debts to the United Nations, an end to veto power in the UN, and
an end to permanent membership on the UN Security Council.
We call for a constitutional amendment requiring a binding vote of the people on all issues of war
or military intervention.
We support the right of soldiers to form unions to represent their views and interests.
Immigration
The Socialist Party works to build a world in which everyone will be able to freely move
across borders, to visit and to live wherever they choose. We recognize the central role
global capitalism plays in forcing the immigration of people from the less developed to
the more industrialized countries, often leading to further economic and social
injustice.

●

●

●

●

●

●

We support secular democratic states, assuring equal rights to every citizen and
resident in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We oppose the militarization of the United States/Mexican border, and an increase in
the service budget instead of the "military" budget of the INS.
We defend the rights of all immigrants to education, health care, and full civil and
legal rights and call for an unconditional amnesty program for all undocumented people.
We oppose the imposition of any fees on those receiving amnesty.
We call for an end to the use of "secret evidence" in deportation hearings, a ban on
all immigration detentions and military tribunals, and full due process and habeus corpus
rights in U.S. courts for all non-citizens on U.S. territory or in U.S. custody.
We demand an end to police raids in areas where immigrants congregate.
We oppose "guest worker" programs. We call for full citizenship rights upon
demonstrating residency for six months.
Health Care
The Socialist Party stands for a socialized health care system based on universal coverage, salaried doctors
and health care workers, and revenues derived from a steeply graduated income tax.

●

●

●

●

●

●

●

●

We give critical support to the demand for the immediate abolition of all private health insurance
companies through the creation of a single-payer health system. We see single-payer as an important step in
the direction of a fully socialized national health program with full standard and alternative medical,
dental, vision, and mental health coverage for all. This system would be publicly funded through progressive
taxation and controlled by demo-cratically elected assemblies of health care workers and patients. The
National Health Program should improve, and replace, Medicare and Medicaid.
We call for a health care system that emphasizes preventive care, respects patients' privacy, gives
special attention to the needs of the physically and mentally disabled, and conducts treatment and research
unimpaired by sexism, racism, or homophobia.
We call for full funding for AIDS research, prevention, and treatment. We demand full civil rights for
people living with AIDS.
We call for public ownership and worker and community control of the pharmaceutical industry.
We call for educational programs to help prevent drug addiction; for voluntary treatment programs for
addicts and alcoholics; and for the availability of free, sterile needles for those still using IV drugs.
We call for the reinstatement of funding to community mental health services so that low-cost or no-cost
treatment is available on a voluntary basis, with clients' rights respected. We oppose involuntary
incarceration for treatment without due process.
We support the right to choose or refuse medical treatment, the right to die, and the right to assisted
suicide.
We call for full community decision-making regarding the creation, organization or elimination of public
health care facilities.
The Economy
The Socialist Party stands for a fundamental transformation of the economy, focusing on production for need not profit. So-called fair trade is meaningless as long as the world
economy is dominated by a few massive corporations. Only a global transformation from capitalism to democratic socialism will provide the conditions for international peace,
justice, and economic cooperation based on the large-scale transfer of resources and technology from the developed to the developing countries.
●

We demand the immediate withdrawal of the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement
(CAFTA), and oppose the creation of a widened Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

●

We call for worker and community ownership and control of corporations within the framework of a decentralized and democratically determined economic plan.

●

We call for a minimum wage of $15 per hour, indexed to the cost of living.

●

We call for a full employment policy. We support the provision of a livable guaranteed annual income.

●

●

●

●

We call for all financial and insurance institutions to be socially owned and operated by a democratically-controlled national banking authority, which should include credit
unions, mutual insurance cooperatives, and cooperative state banks. In the meantime, we call for re-regulation of the banking and insurance industries.
We call for a steeply graduated income tax and a steeply graduated estate tax, and a maximum income of no more than ten times the minimum. We oppose regressive taxes such
as payroll tax, sales tax, and property taxes.
We call for the restoration of the capital gains tax and luxury tax on a progressive, graduated scale.
We call for compensation to communities-- and compensation, re-training, and other support service for workers-- affected by plant and military base closings as stop-gap
measures until we reach our goal of creating a socialist society totally separate from the global capitalist economy.

●

We oppose the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization as instruments of capitalist oppression throughout the world.

●

We demand cancellation of Third World debt.

●

We call for a National Pension Authority to hold the assets of private pension funds, and a levy against corporate assets for any pension fund deficits.

●

We call for increased and expanded welfare assistance and increased and expanded unemployment compensation at 100% of a worker's previous income or the minimum wage,
whichever is higher, for the full period of unemployment or re-training, whichever is longer.

●

We support a program of massive federal investment in both urban and rural areas for infrastructure reconstruction and economic development.

●

We support tax benefits for renters equal to those for homeowners.

●

We call for the elimination of subsidies and tax breaks that benefit corporations and all other forms of corporate welfare.

●

We oppose the court-created precedent of “corporate personhood” that illegitimately gives corporations rights that were intended for human beings
Eugene V. Debs

Four-time 'Socialist Party of America'
Presidential Candidate, receiving 6% of the
popular vote in 1912, the highest for any
left-wing or socialist presidential
candidate.
One of the founding members of the
'Industrial Workers of the World'
(IWW/Wobblies).

1855 - 1926

Through their work in the labor movement in
the early 19th Century, Debs became the most
prominent socialist in United States
History, enabling a tenuous mainstream
interest in socialism and is the strongest
individual influence for left-wing politics
in America since.
A renowned orator, they were arrested a
second time for a speech denouncing US
participation in the first World War. The
Socialist 1920 Campaign ran Debs for
President while they were in prison.
Frank Zeidler

Was the most recent Socialist mayor of any
major American city from 1948-1960.
[Milwaukee, Wisconsin]
Milwaukee grew industrially during Zeidler's
administration and never had to repay loans,
the city doubled in size, the park system
was updated, and Zeidler was an early
proponent of civil rights in the local area.

1912 - 2006

Instrumental in re-establishing the
'Socialist Party USA' and was its most
successful presidential candidate (by
percentage of popular vote).
Daniel Hoan

1881 - 1961
Held the longest continuous
Socialist administration in U.S.
History as mayor of Milwaukee,
Wisconsin from 1916-1940.
Produced a large number of
progressive reforms, initiated the
country's first public housing
project, municipal ownership of
public sanitation facilities,
reputation for a honest and
efficient government. Highway
system plans resulted in the Hoan
Bridge.

David McReynolds

1929 - Present

Significant member in SPUSA,
notable role in forming SPUSA,
notorious pluralistic peace
activist, was in a group of five
who were the first to publicly
burn their draft cards after it
was determined to be a felony,
two-time presidential candidate
for SPUSA, first openly LGBT
presidential candidate in 1980.

  • 6. Philosophy Regarding Government Continued A new system of production would be cooperatively and democratically owned by workers and consumers, with a focus on quality, human need, and mutual benefit. Cultivation of resources would be rationally configured upon the needs of humanity. Community residents would control their own local entities and their own lives, establishing a radical and secular political and economic consensus democracy. This would assert civil liberties for all. A new malleable society would be composed as to be fit for all humanity, establishing egalitarianism across all aspects of life, eliminating oppression, inequality, exploitation, class, organized greed, forprofit wars, and environmental degradation.
  • 7. Philosophy Regarding Government Continued All of this can be achieved through widespread comprehension, consciousness, and participation through the direct action and unity of the working people, and not performed by a political and/or economic elite purportedly acting on behalf of the people. The working class will ascertain its own future from its own virtues, a socialist future that can benefit all of humankind, establish equality for all, and prioritize human rights before property rights.
  • 8. Logo/Mascot The SPUSA logo is a modernization of the historical 'Socialist Party of America' logo. The logo represents international proletarian unity, discarding divisive bias such as nationality or race. The slogan is an excerpt from Karl Marx's “The Communist Manifestio”. It has become a popular and common left-wing political slogan.
  • 9. Military Spending The United States is the sole remaining global superpower. The U.S. government uses its overwhelming military power to consolidate its strategic hold over the entire world and to defend and advance the interests of U.S. owned corporations as they exploit the working people and natural resources of the entire planet. We stand in total opposition to U.S. imperialism and the current “war on terror” which is just another subterfuge for U.S. imperialism. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● We call for the closing of all U.S. military facilities at home and abroad that train foreign military and paramilitary personnel. We call for the United States to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Iraq and Afghanistan. We call for an end to the U.S. occupation of the province of Guantanamo, Cuba. We call for an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank-East Jerusalem and Gaza, and an end to all U.S. aid to Israel, as a precondition for peace. We support an immediate cutoff of all U.S. military aid to Colombia, and all other recipients. We call for the abolition of the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, and all other institutions of covert warfare. We stand for unconditional disarmament by the United States. We call for an international treaty outlawing all weapons of mass destruction, including the use of depleted uranium in conventional weapons. We call for an immediate 50% cut in the military budget, followed by additional cuts, with the aim of rapidly reducing the military budget to less than 10% of its current level, with the "peace dividend" directed to essential social services and to the cost of cleaning up contaminated military sites. We call for the disbanding of NATO and all other aggressive military alliances, and the closing of all overseas bases. We call for an end to U.S. arms sales throughout the world. We call for the U.S. to pay off its debts to the United Nations, an end to veto power in the UN, and an end to permanent membership on the UN Security Council. We call for a constitutional amendment requiring a binding vote of the people on all issues of war or military intervention. We support the right of soldiers to form unions to represent their views and interests.
  • 10. Immigration The Socialist Party works to build a world in which everyone will be able to freely move across borders, to visit and to live wherever they choose. We recognize the central role global capitalism plays in forcing the immigration of people from the less developed to the more industrialized countries, often leading to further economic and social injustice. ● ● ● ● ● ● We support secular democratic states, assuring equal rights to every citizen and resident in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We oppose the militarization of the United States/Mexican border, and an increase in the service budget instead of the "military" budget of the INS. We defend the rights of all immigrants to education, health care, and full civil and legal rights and call for an unconditional amnesty program for all undocumented people. We oppose the imposition of any fees on those receiving amnesty. We call for an end to the use of "secret evidence" in deportation hearings, a ban on all immigration detentions and military tribunals, and full due process and habeus corpus rights in U.S. courts for all non-citizens on U.S. territory or in U.S. custody. We demand an end to police raids in areas where immigrants congregate. We oppose "guest worker" programs. We call for full citizenship rights upon demonstrating residency for six months.
  • 11. Health Care The Socialist Party stands for a socialized health care system based on universal coverage, salaried doctors and health care workers, and revenues derived from a steeply graduated income tax. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● We give critical support to the demand for the immediate abolition of all private health insurance companies through the creation of a single-payer health system. We see single-payer as an important step in the direction of a fully socialized national health program with full standard and alternative medical, dental, vision, and mental health coverage for all. This system would be publicly funded through progressive taxation and controlled by demo-cratically elected assemblies of health care workers and patients. The National Health Program should improve, and replace, Medicare and Medicaid. We call for a health care system that emphasizes preventive care, respects patients' privacy, gives special attention to the needs of the physically and mentally disabled, and conducts treatment and research unimpaired by sexism, racism, or homophobia. We call for full funding for AIDS research, prevention, and treatment. We demand full civil rights for people living with AIDS. We call for public ownership and worker and community control of the pharmaceutical industry. We call for educational programs to help prevent drug addiction; for voluntary treatment programs for addicts and alcoholics; and for the availability of free, sterile needles for those still using IV drugs. We call for the reinstatement of funding to community mental health services so that low-cost or no-cost treatment is available on a voluntary basis, with clients' rights respected. We oppose involuntary incarceration for treatment without due process. We support the right to choose or refuse medical treatment, the right to die, and the right to assisted suicide. We call for full community decision-making regarding the creation, organization or elimination of public health care facilities.
  • 12. The Economy The Socialist Party stands for a fundamental transformation of the economy, focusing on production for need not profit. So-called fair trade is meaningless as long as the world economy is dominated by a few massive corporations. Only a global transformation from capitalism to democratic socialism will provide the conditions for international peace, justice, and economic cooperation based on the large-scale transfer of resources and technology from the developed to the developing countries. ● We demand the immediate withdrawal of the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), and oppose the creation of a widened Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). ● We call for worker and community ownership and control of corporations within the framework of a decentralized and democratically determined economic plan. ● We call for a minimum wage of $15 per hour, indexed to the cost of living. ● We call for a full employment policy. We support the provision of a livable guaranteed annual income. ● ● ● ● We call for all financial and insurance institutions to be socially owned and operated by a democratically-controlled national banking authority, which should include credit unions, mutual insurance cooperatives, and cooperative state banks. In the meantime, we call for re-regulation of the banking and insurance industries. We call for a steeply graduated income tax and a steeply graduated estate tax, and a maximum income of no more than ten times the minimum. We oppose regressive taxes such as payroll tax, sales tax, and property taxes. We call for the restoration of the capital gains tax and luxury tax on a progressive, graduated scale. We call for compensation to communities-- and compensation, re-training, and other support service for workers-- affected by plant and military base closings as stop-gap measures until we reach our goal of creating a socialist society totally separate from the global capitalist economy. ● We oppose the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization as instruments of capitalist oppression throughout the world. ● We demand cancellation of Third World debt. ● We call for a National Pension Authority to hold the assets of private pension funds, and a levy against corporate assets for any pension fund deficits. ● We call for increased and expanded welfare assistance and increased and expanded unemployment compensation at 100% of a worker's previous income or the minimum wage, whichever is higher, for the full period of unemployment or re-training, whichever is longer. ● We support a program of massive federal investment in both urban and rural areas for infrastructure reconstruction and economic development. ● We support tax benefits for renters equal to those for homeowners. ● We call for the elimination of subsidies and tax breaks that benefit corporations and all other forms of corporate welfare. ● We oppose the court-created precedent of “corporate personhood” that illegitimately gives corporations rights that were intended for human beings
  • 13. Eugene V. Debs Four-time 'Socialist Party of America' Presidential Candidate, receiving 6% of the popular vote in 1912, the highest for any left-wing or socialist presidential candidate. One of the founding members of the 'Industrial Workers of the World' (IWW/Wobblies). 1855 - 1926 Through their work in the labor movement in the early 19th Century, Debs became the most prominent socialist in United States History, enabling a tenuous mainstream interest in socialism and is the strongest individual influence for left-wing politics in America since. A renowned orator, they were arrested a second time for a speech denouncing US participation in the first World War. The Socialist 1920 Campaign ran Debs for President while they were in prison.
