through effort. Intelligence can be
improved. Talents can be learned.

● Avoids challenges
● Sees effort as a waste of time

● Accepts critique and feedback

Don’t protect from failureDiscipline: analysis and growth

Problem with ‘go to’ phrases…
“You learned that so quickly….you’re so smart!”
If I don’t get it I’m not smart?
“ Wow, you did so well without even studying much, you’re brilliant!”
If I study I’m not brilliant?
“ Gorgeous drawing! You’re the next Picasso!”
Oh no… I better only do things I’m ‘good at’

  • 3. Fixed vs. Growth Mindset Fixed Growth Intelligence and ability is innate. People are either smart or not. They are born with talent. Intelligence and ability is developed through effort. Intelligence can be improved. Talents can be learned. Traits: ● Blames others ● Ignores feedback ● Gives up ● Avoids challenges ● Sees effort as a waste of time Traits: ● Takes responsibility ● Accepts critique and feedback ● Persists ● Accepts challenges ● Sees effort as a path to improvement

Problem with ‘go to’ phrases… “You learned that so quickly….you’re so smart!” If I don’t get it I’m not smart? “ Wow, you did so well without even studying much, you’re brilliant!” If I study I’m not brilliant? “ Gorgeous drawing! You’re the next Picasso!” Oh no… I better only do things I’m ‘good at’
  • 12. 1) Process Vs. Product Growth mindset:(On process) Fixed mindset: (On product) I see you’re struggling to keep your room clean. What about trying…. (brainstorm) Stop being so lazy!! I’m proud that you didn’t procrastinate You’re so smart, you’ll do great. I’m sorry you were frustrated, what can you do different next time? Math isn’t your thing, it’s OK I noticed that you put in a lot of effort to work collaboratively with others You’re the smartest one in the group It always takes lots of practice to learn new things Here, I’ll do it for you Give it a try- here’s an idea of a way to do it No one in our family was ever good at that Let’s work together to get to know each other… Such a stubborn baby
  • 14. 2) Don’t protect from failure! -Scenario of Elizabeth: Dweck pg. 180 DO NOT: - Protect kids from failure. DO: - Analyze failure and support improvement
  • 15. 3) Discipline: Discipline: The purpose: To teach. DO NOT TEACH: Children who break rules are punished and shamed DO TEACH: Think through issues. Always Think: “Am I judging and punishing you or am I helping you think and learn”
  • 16. What Growth Mindset is NOT: Talent = Effort + Persistence Effort = product/outcome The Spectrum!
