4. he Indian plastic industry has undergone revolutionary
Tdevelopments since its inception with the initial production of
polystyrene in 1957. It is growing at a rapid pace, gradually
achieving numerous milestones. The industry is enduring major
technological advancements and developments in the field of polymer
technology and machinery processing. Its cost-effective manufacturing
is quickly replacing other materials in different segments and
industries. Moreover, in terms of value added, India’s plastic products
industry has a share of about 0.5% of the country’s GDP. Plastic
products also contribute in around 1% of the country’s exports. This
industry also provides employment to around 4 million people in the
country, including more than 2000 exporters. It also has a major
presence in the medium and small scale industries, which contributes
for around 50% turnover.
This industry is gradually making its mark in the global markets with
12% growth rate. India is rapidly emerging as a center of gravity as it
provides numerous opportunities for the global plastics industry. The
country is on its way to become the world’s next plastic destination
owing to its mammoth size and the rapid growing domestic demand.
Experts believe that the plastic industry will play a major role in
assisting the government in achieving the goal to increase the exports
to $900 billion by 2020.
Plastic companies have received the impetus to grow locally and
internationally due to globalization, prompt technological changes, and
growing consumerism. These have, in turn, introduced far-reaching
changes and endless opportunities. In India, the per capita consumption
of plastic is about 10 kg per person compared with around 90-100 kg in
the US and 50 kg in Europe. With the increase in per capita
consumption, the industry will also witness increase in investments in
the years to come.
The Indian plastic industry is facing environmental and technological
challenges. Moving forward, companies are expected to increase
recycling and reusing of plastic to nurture sustainability and
innovation. Emerging technologies and growth in the usage of
polymers in various fields like construction, healthcare, and so on are
increasing the demand of plastic products. In the years to come, the per
capita consumption of plastics is set to escalate, which will in turn
stimulate the growth of the plastic manufacturing sector.

2. What are the different products and services provided
by the company which is setting you apart from your
competitors?
We manufacture artificial leather/PVC Vinyl for
automotive, footwear, Furnishing, Bags & accessories,
Upholstery etc, segments. MUL works in a different way in
the competition although everyone tries his best to be on
top in the market. We have very strong marketing and R&D
team. It is very important to know in which direction
market is moving and analyze the change in the pattern of
customer’s requirement.
Just to elaborate we are the only company from India who
is supplying directly to US automotive companies –
Chrysler and Ford & maintain very good quality. We are the
preferred supplier to Chrysler, Ford, GM overseas &
Honda, Lear,Maruti, GM, Mahindra, Tata, Nissan,
Hyundai, LML, in India and VKC ,Purgeon, Action,
Liberty, Relaxo in footwear sector. We export our products
to USA, Srilanka, UAE, Russia, South Africa, Belgium, UK
& Saudi Arabia.
3. Brief about the Founder/Director/CEO and what is
the source of inspiration for the company to be in the
plastic industry?
Suresh Poddar entered the Artificial Leather trade and
distribution business in 1968 when he was 22 years old as a
commission agent for the National Leather Cloth Company.
At that time, he used to supply to Hindustan Motors and
Bata. By 1976, he got distributorship for eastern India. It
was the time of early 80's when Sanjay Gandhi’s lifetime
dream came true and Maruti Suzuki came into existence.
Maruti used to import door pads from Japan and Mr. Poddar
began toying with the idea of manufacturing door pads for
Maruti-Suzuki locally. Soon after that, he was offered to
set up a manufacturing facility near the Maruti plant. That is
how Mayur Industries came into existence and the first
plant was set up at Jaipur and after that, there was no
looking back.
4. What are the few challenges faced by the company in
the plastic industry today?
The main challenge is competition from China. In India, we
manufacture PVC coated fabric for making artificial leather.
In China, most of the products are from PU coating which
is very close to leather look like and very lightweight and
more eco-friendly than PVC. Now India is importing 20
million meters from China of PU artificial leather every
month. Therefore MUL decided to go for making PU
leather for which 25 acres land has been bought in Gwalior,
MP.
5. The Technology used in manufacturing our products.
We manufacture artificial leather/PVC vinyl using release
paper transfer coating technology. We have spent more
than Rs 4 – 5 crores on developing world-class laboratory
to test any type of requirement of PU/PVC leather produced
for the automotive industry. Today MUL is having well-
equipped testing facility in-house which saves a lot of time
in developing products and manufacturing quality product.
Today we are in a position to manufacture any type of
knitting fabric required for this industry. We have more than
35 knitting machines & the process house.
6. How the company is contributing to its sector in the
industry and what makes you a unique player in this
field?
Customer friendly products presence & penetration in the
market has changed the presumption of people to utilize the
benefits of our products suitable to their needs which was
not the case before. MUL could achieve this by offering
various innovate products which can be used for multiple
purposes. MUL has become the biggest exporters of
artificial leather to automotive market in USA like Chrisler
and Ford with its strict conformance to specifications given
by these customers.
7. Explain advantage over peers.
Our great Focus on Research and Development: -
Rapidly progressing technological revolution has also
created the need for the industry to focus on R&D and
market intelligence to offer the right product mix to the
market.
Environment-friendly approach: - Synthetic
leather/textile industry consumes a large amount of
resources. Hence it becomes much more important to adopt
the ‘greenway’ for growth. The first step we have taken is
building an Environmental Management system.
Implementation of standard systems & processes:
INTERVIEW WITH INSIGHTS SUCCESS

20. Implementation of standard systems & processes and
lean manufacturing systems reduced/eliminated waste
of the source thereby increased efficiency, better
quality of products and resource optimization.
Shortening of lead time: Lead time is shortened
through continuous monitoring of production processes
to reduce/eliminate faults and rework.
High-performance training: High-performance
training is the need of the hour. People need to unlearn
traditional/outdated methods and relearn the skills
required by the industry today. It is important for our
workforce to upgrade their skills so as to be able to
operate the advanced technological systems.
8. Benefits gained by clients while doing business
with Mayur.
We always strictly ensure that the customer gets the
best quality product & services. We ensure Timely
delivery of products & consistency in supplies and
provide competitive & best pricing, innovative designs,
and products suitable for the new generation scenario
along with providing immediate and timely attention to
customer complaints or issues & expressing
willingness to serve and customers get a feeling that
they have been heard and understood.
9. How do you see yourself and the company in the
future ahead?
As a step towards expansion, we are setting up a PU
leather plant in Gwalior, MP for which 25 acres of land
has been acquired. Construction is going on and
hopefully, production will start in April 2019. This will
increase the company’s sales immensely since hardly
any manufacturer in India exists in this segment. We
are planning to add 3 more PVC lines in the next 3 – 4
year time looking at the future of the market. As per
plan we have great opportunity for 20% growth on year
to year basis. At the moment our full focus is on
automotive industry, domestic sales and export. We
have very good growth in sales for next 3 years since
we are supplying to USA market and going well in
European market. The new car models are going to
enter India soon demanding very different quality of
artificial leather for which we are equipped and
qualified as we are already supplying to car
manufacturers in USA.

24. Bioplastics
A STRONG SUBSTITUTE FOR THE FUTURE
Bioplastics are offering the most promising solutions to plastic menace to disturb the
ecology of the planet. These represent the group of materials with different properties
and applications, composed of chemicals which are synthesized by microorganisms
such as bacteria. Bioplastics are bio based, derived from the natural renewable resources, and
are biodegradable. The inevitability of developing the economic system in accordance with
the way nature works is increasingly recognized by the industry experts. Therefore, their
efforts are directed towards the industrial scale production of bio-plastics.
Recycling of bioplastics is a big opportunity and has a potential to emerge as a major area of
bio-plastic industry. It is worth noting that only nine percent of traditional plastic has been
recycled since it became common all over the world. Bioplastics look and sense very similar
to regular plastics and should be avoided in same recycle chain to maintain the quality of both
categories. Separate dedicated recycling systems are required to operate everywhere to re-use
each type of bioplastic with the aim to completely substitute the petroleum-based plastic.
Bioeconomy for the Sustainable Development
Bioeconomy is the novel concept of creating an entire economy based on renewable biological
resources for sustainable production and their application in food and healthcare, energy,
industrial products. Bioplastics are the important component of bioeconomy. Innovations in
bioeconomy are creating numerous employment opportunities and can develop a diversified
market in the rural and coastal regions. Around eighty percent of byproducts in petrochemical
industry are used for manufacturing the polymer materials. Replacing them with biomass is
the only way ahead for bioeconomy to cause a sweeping change.
In Search of the Absolute Material
Bioplastics are essentially polymer compounds with a variety of chemical compositions. They
can be broadly categorized into two parameters - one is bio-based and another is
biodegradable. Commodity plastics like PE, PP, and PVC can be made bio-based with the
renewable resources available in nature like the agricultural waste. Bio based and non-
biodegradable polymers are Bio-PE, Bio-PET, etc. The third category embraces the bio-
plastics materials such as PBAT, PCL and the fourth category is most eco-friendly which
consists of starch blend polymers like PHA, PLA which are sourced from bio-based raw
materials. Non-toxic additives are mixed to maximize the useful properties of these materials.
These materials have different chemical compositions which can be listed as below -
May 2018|
™
22
™
26. - PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) is made by genetically engineered microorganisms and often
used for medical applications
- PLA (polylactic acid) is an edible plastic made from the sugars in cornstarch or sugarcane.
- PBAT (polybutyrate adipate terephthalate) is biodegradable and compostable.
- PBS (polybutylene succinate) is biodegradable polyester with properties like polypropylene.
- PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate) is temperature resistant, durable polymer.
Scientists and industry experts believe that these bio-plastic materials are the substitute in
future for traditional plastic.
Implications of using Bioplastics on the Industrial Scale
The environmental value of bioplastics is based on the level of its biodegradability.
Photodegradable bio-plastics use sunlight and oxo-degradable use heat and light to degrade
more quickly. Biodegradable plastics use microorganisms to degrade within days and produce
carbon dioxide and water.
There are challenges like the availability of biomass on industrial scale and complications
involved in processing and refinement but alternative solutions are also being searched.
Independent studies have indicated that marine red algae were previously used for producing
biofuels which can be a crop for bio-plastics also. Seaweeds can be an alternative biomass
crop which is cost effective and has the minimum disturbing effect on ecological systems.
Bioplastics properties like weak water resistance and mechanical fragileness are found in
certain materials produced from crops like maize and potato. This makes even more sense to
use alternative biomass resources rather than food crops.
Bioplastics are the most effective substitute for many products of daily use and can have an
immensely positive impact on the environment. It is contributing to the reduction of
greenhouse gas emissions. It decreases the carbon footprint by providing energy savings in
production for achieving sustainable development goals. According to independent reports,
global bio-plastics market is estimated to increase from seventeen billion USD around a year
to reach thirty-six billion USD in coming two to three years.
A Vivid Future of Bioplastics
Research and development efforts are expected to provide solutions to improve the current
situation and hurdles for the commercial use of bio-plastics. Universities are collaborating to
establish a cooperative research center devoted to the development of biologically made
plastics. This will further strengthen the environmental claims made for bio-plastic
substitutes. Their efforts will be focused on increasing the biodegradability and the biomass
content. The ultimate aim is to have accurate and specific information on a variety of
substitute materials available.
Bioplastic Packaging market is also booming across the world. Especially in North America,
Europe, China, Japan, Southeast Asia and India, it is expected to increase manifold in near
future. Global annual production capacities of materials like PBAT are currently around ten
thousand tons. Companies are strengthening the business with a considerable investment in
research and development. They are co-operating with government authorities, regulators, and
consumer forums. Initiatives are being taken by the manufacturers for implementing rigorous
quality testing parameters of bioplastic materials and degradability.

applicable to industrial production
where raw materials are processed into
finished goods on large scale. Indian
Industry mainly focused on services

various factors and productivity is the
leader. The productivity of Indian
Manufacturing industry is not more
when we compare it with other
international sectors. Greater Noida,
Nasik, Mumbai, Aurangabad,
Bangalore are the main hubs of
manufacturing in India.
Benefits of Manufacturing in India:
Make in India Campaign: Because of
this campaign, Indian Government is
giving lots of attention and high
priority to manufacturing industry
including sufficient investment and
development.
High Quality Production: Most of the
Indian manufacturers use high-quality
machines and tools to produce good
quality products. Many Indian
industries are well known for the care
and trustworthy for their work and
business deals. Unlike China, India
does not carry the stigma of poor
quality production.
Availability of labour and Cheap
Labour Cost: As compare to China,
labour cost is very cheap in India. India
has a huge number of labours who are
skilled as well as unskilled. The Skilled
educated workers like researcher,
engineers are able to contribute cost-
effective development support to
manufacturing operations.
Domestic Market: Due to attractive
domestic market, India can easily enter
into in-country manufacturing
operations
Challenges of Manufacturing in
India:
Power availability: The major
challenge in Indian manufacturing is
Low power availability. Due to
unavailability of power 24 hours per
day, there is decrease in productivity
and efficiency, and lower output rates.
Labour Productivity: Labour
productivity is lesser in India than
many competing countries. This is
because of lag in supply chain
management, transportation,
production planning, and maintenance.
Intellectual Property Protection and
Enforcement: IP protection and
enforcement is an expensive and high
risk in India. Another challenge with IP
rights in India is that India is currently
going through some significant IP
reforms, which make things more
complex and, at least for now,
uncertain.
Cost and Fragmentation of
Transportation and Logistics:
Transportation is very costly and slow
in India. It can take long delivery time
to get products to the coasts from some
places in India. Furthermore, logistics
are inferior. The positive point is that
the Indian government notice this
problem in infrastructure and is
working to resolve it.

38. Rotational Molding is one of the specialized techniques that
are used to create a hollow plastic product with a high
precision. In this process, heat is used to melt and fuse the
plastic resin in a closed mold.
This Plastic Rotational Molding embraces different stages,
namely—loading the resin into the mold, heating and fusing
the resin, cooling and finally extracting the product from the
mold. With the great advancements in technology, a wide
variety of materials are used to produce the plastic products
using rotational molding. Materials such as polyethylene,
plastisols, nylon, fluoropolymers, polycarbonate,
polypropylene, polyurethane, and elastomers can be used.
One of the important and economical plastic products can
be developed in various sizes and shapes from Rotomolding
plastic, which would be impossible to produce by any other
process.
Rotational Molding Plastic for Manufacturing
Advanced Plastic Products
Though having many manufacturing processes; Rotational
Molding offers a unique set of rewards. It is one the
important plastic product manufacturing process, which is
rarely used to develop highly durable and long-lasting
plastic products. However, polyethylene is a commonly
used material; this process offers the freedom to use the raw
material. Ease of use is another advantage of this process.
As the process requires a mold; it can be built using
different methods such as, casting, machining or fabricating
a mold.
Plus Points of Rotational Molding
One of the most unique manufacturing processes,
Rotational Molding is the advanced method of
manufacturing plastic products. In this process heating,
shaping, melting, and cooling occur after the resin is placed
in the mold. Interesting thing is that it can be used to
produce small to large, simple to complex parts in a very
less time.
Affordable manufacturing process, low initial tooling costs,
economically help to manufacture large products and parts,
developing durable products, less time consuming to
develop plastic products are some of the positive points of
Rotational Molding. It also offers designing flexibility,
which is the attractive aspect, stress-free manufacturing of
plastic products, multiple options in choosing raw
materials, hollow part can be made in one piece with no
weld lines, multilayer products can be possibly made, and
inserts are relatively easy to mold.
Wide Applications of Rotational Molding
Extremely versatile limitless products manufactured by the
Rotational Molding plastic due to the customizable nature
of the manufacturing process.
Rotational Molding finds applications in the varioussectors
such as:
• Automotive Industry
• Agricultural Industry
• Furniture Industry
• General Industry such as lighting solutions,
namely—double cone, lamp cover, spheres, and cubes
• Packaging Industry such as stackable containers, pallets,
and tanks
• Sports and leisure Industry
• Water Treatment Industry
• Marina offshore buoyancy and marine safety equipment
Industries- e.g. navigation aids, mooring and marker buoys,
boom floats, SOLAS-approved lifebuoys, fuel tanks, and
net floats
• Construction Industry
Futuristic Expansion of Rotomolding
New materials are being developed by the major
companies, including smaller compounding companies
focused solely on the Rotomolding process. Future
evolutions include biopolymers, and new versions of
polyolefins. Rotomolding is occupying less than 2% of the
global needs for polyethylene which will surely go on
increasing. The positive aspects for Rotomolders can also
bring in drawbacks in the sense that the industry is
fragmented and limited in terms of materials or easy-to-
access product ranges. However, the scope is wide for the
analysis, from political to environmental, from cosmic
matters to microscopic and from people to robots.
Population trends, micro-finance, communication, artificial
intelligence, climate change, the microbiome &
microbiology are the prime areas whose relevance makes a
broader background for Rotomolding.

5-10% of the organization has placed

Most of the customers are very fond of

Cloud was the first choice as scalable

are moving their mission critical setup
to consumption base model- this is due
to increased cloud maintenance cost.

42. When we move to manufacture
industry now Smart Manufacturing
trend is a word which we hear every
day from system integrators but the
catch is- do organization really want to
be smart as require a courage to get out
of not only legacy software’s but from
old manufacturing machines also. That
requires a huge-capex investment and
if we do it half way then your
recording, tracking and analyzing data
will not lead to any fruitful decision
making.
On the other hand, if we have an
objective such as machines at shop
floor operate autonomously and can
communicate directly with
manufacturing systems and that should
that employs computer control and
high levels of adaptability to achieve
the goal of Smart Manufacturing.
Crises
Definitely, there is a shortage of skilled
personnel to control these emerging for
e.g. Artificial Intelligence that has
become so powerful in some cases that
we have to have a Kill Switch to
control else it becomes a problem for
creator itself.
So business needs to understand their
working model and with the help of
these technologies, they have to
prepare a final wish list for achieving
success. It could be used to change
customer experience, for predictive
maintenance, creating new business
model or disrupting the existing ones.
So crises are at the both end that is at
Skill and also with the business
understanding level the key here is
opting by getting engaged for some
time during POC and post seeing the
applied results to the business.
Those who lack the skill or who think
that with smart manufacturing, human
jobs will go- yes it would but that
would also create a demarcation
between ordinary and extra-ordinary
work force and that employment will
last longer so this change will keep
both organization and employees on
their toes of achieving success.
Revolutions Currently Prevailing in
the Current Industry Environment
Yes, definitely there are different
revolutions we are seeing which are
prevailing in the industry and we have
examples all around be it a Cab
Service, Delivery Service, Grocery
Service, Mobile Wallets etc. all of them
have created a better market
completion and place for their
customers and delighted their
customers with their service
experiences.
This has given a shift from reactionary
practices to predictive ones which deal
with predicting customer mood, buying
the pattern, and pursuing them till
closer.
This helped the organization to achieve
the goal of optimizing concept
generation, production, and product
transaction and this is a value addition
towards addressing a dynamic and
global market. It has also given an
insight to the manufacturer to create a
Safe Work Environment to attract the
future workforce.
So, future is only promising for those-
who are really serious and adopting the
path of digitalization but never
forgetting the basics of a support
system which is very much required.
As going digital will rapidly open
channels where your customers would
find you but same way you have to
follow the revolutionary idea to
support that customer, when they need
you else your complete work would be
a failure. As people value most of the
brands because they really care about
their customers and about innovatively
giving new experiences.

51. picture of disposing off anything
made of plastic became a
disadvantage.
Ascent to Universality
Plastic was a material that started
finding a lot of uses. From the
tiniest of items such as a spoon to
a massive Boeing Dreamliner
aircraft – all of it majorly consists
of this easy to make substance.
The material can be found in
packaging with regard to food as
this helps in keeping it fresh, thus
reducing wastage. That aside,
plastic also keeps food clean and
safe from contamination. This has
also made the lives of humans
easier as it lasts longer and if it
isn't required it can just be
disposed of. It is also a major
component in the transport
industry with most vehicles
consisting upto 50 % of plastic
like the steering wheels,
windshield wipers and also the
protective features like the
airbags and seatbelts. Majority of
the electronics such as the
hen Leo Hendrik, a
WBelgian born
American invented
plastic in the year 1907, little did
he know that humans would
exceed its usage limit and bring
forth chaos in nature. The world
as we know it is a complete
contrast of the 1900s and it
requires a lot of efforts to bring it
back to its former glory.
Plastic was initially not a much
sought after material, because it
couldn’t maintain its shape or
stay stable at high temperatures.
But, when Charles Goodyear
unexpectedly discovered the
process of vulcanization, it
opened up an array of
discoveries. This is where the
workability of plastic was found.
Post this, the material became
pervasive in medical as well as
technological fields. It was used
in the manufacture of computers,
prosthetics, automobiles etc.
Though the rising consumption
was an advantage, the bigger

52. television, radios, microwaves, hair dryers etc are plastic
products. The medical field uses plastic as a life saver.
Hearing aid, prosthetics, syringes, X ray machines,
medicine bags etc. are just a few of them. When an element
like this, is easy to produce and use, it’s bound to be
excessively used.
Easy Access, Easy Riddance
Upon knowing the extent to which plastic is used, we can
perceive how easy it is to create it as well. Bakelite was one
of the first synthetic plastics to come into large scale use.
Originally created as a natural insulator, it could be forged
into any shape. Soon enough a trail of newer forms
followed such as nylon, polyester, plexiglass etc. All these
new material were put into full production mode for various
other products. During World War 2, the use of plastic rose
immensely and this led to worldwide consumption of the
same. It slowly turned into the most convenient material to
have in any form. Apart from its availability, the easy to
dispose part also worked well with people.
Plastic is one such element that can be used and thrown
without a fuss. For instance, a pack of noodles remains in
its cover until the contents are removed. The wrapper easily
goes into the bin. In this way, there are around seven billion
people doing the same, which doesn’t seem like best thing.
Let’s Talk Numbers
India was initially a country that depended upon eco-
friendly ways of packaging as well as consuming food in
bio-degradable materials such as the banana leaf. But, over
the years technological advancements as well as awareness
have given rise to the usage of plastic in the country. The
concept of how plastic is more durable and economical
compared to the other products. It can be observed from a
recent survey that in the year 1996 the amount of plastic
used was calculated to be 61,000 tonnes. Though it may
seem like a lot, the difference 11 years later is alarming
where the consumption is calculated to be 8,500,000
tonnes.
1996 onwards the country was starting to develop and adapt
to all the changes in the food, travel, technology industry
etc. Indians were now slowly getting used to the concept of
microwaves, food processors, printers, laptops etc. And by
2007, the number of plastic products in a household
increased. For lunch purposes, steel boxes were replaced
with plastic ones, stone grinders were replaced with
processors and so it went. This tremendous rise also meant
that the country would now go overboard with plastic.
And to add to the statement, it’s said that an average Indian
uses approximately 25 pounds of plastic every year. This
includes 27% plastic bottle. This is leading to a large scale
imbalance where the plastic consumed has nowhere to go
and most of it is dumped in the sea. And as far as
predictions go, researchers say that in a span of 30-40 years
there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
Ways to Solve the Impasse
The element causing imbalance in the environment, plastic,
has a decomposition timeline of about 500 years, depending
on the kind of product. A normal plastic bag takes close to
200 years to disintegrate. So to see, the amount of plastic
present on the earth today will take thousands of years. But,
with advancing technology, the best solution that is
available today is recycling. Plastic as said earlier can be
turned into any shape and size. Presently the only kinds of
plastics that can be recycled are PET (Polyethylene
Terephthalate), HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and
PVC (Plasticised Polyvinyl Chloride). The various
recycling units across the country gather plastic segregated
by rag pickers and upon recycling turns it into a different
object within a month. Various startups have also been
taking the initiating the need for recycling.
A lot of states in the country have taken to banning plastic
entirely to curb its usage and encourage the use of cloth or
jute bags. Though the ban will indeed not add on to the
existing crisis, a more efficient mode of recycling is yet to
be developed.
Self-starter solutions
The people of the country need to do their own bit and
voluntarily reduce how much plastic they use. Where
plastic plates are used in weddings, social occasions etc.
plates made of banana leaves or coconut leaves can be an
option. These were already in use since the age old times.
Copper bottles can be used instead of normal water bottles,
apart from its added health benefits; it’s an element that can
easily be broken down into a new product. As far as storage
is concerned, instead of food being stored in plastic
containers, it can be replaced with glass jars or glass mugs
which will help in making sure that plastic is limited
indoors.
These minuscule steps if taken by each and every individual
can make a huge difference in the way the world changes.
The environment can breathe a sigh of relief and so can
human beings.
