How We
Can Help
3. HOW MUCH DIFFERENCE CAN
ONE CHOICE MAKE
At first, it doesnât seem like a big deal. Sharing
an idea, speaking up for others, or pausing to
listen to those around you may be small acts
of kindness. However, the magic unfolds when
we add consistency, intentionality, and time.
It shapes our entire environment, overt time
defining the culture of how things are done and
how things can be in the future. In other words,
every decision we make has the power to create
a ripple effect. We have the key to shifting the
narrative at every moment in our lives. But
how often are we aware of this?
The pandemic woke us up to our blind spots.
Weâve all been so busy working that we forgot to
be human. We forgot to just be. As COVID halted
our travel plans and âbusiness as usual,â it also
stopped us from running in the hamster wheel
of mindless action. For the first time, everyone,
including us at InnovatorsBoxÂź
, found ourselves
asking if this is really the best way to do what we
do at work.
For us, that meant rethinking how and what
we serve the clientele. For me, while I loved
in-person engagements, the weekly travel
was starting to take a toll on my health. I had
forgotten when I last felt physically healthy
and recharged. I was juggling multiple projects,
email threads, and communication timelinesâ
frequently waking up at hotels, feeling
confused about what city I was in. This was not
sustainable. I also wondered how we could
provide more proactive content and creative
resources that others could use on their own,
instead of only creating customized services
when clients reached out to us for specific
projects. Still, I didnât know any other way. Until
the pandemic shook everything up, I thought
this was all there was.
18 months later, weâve grown to realize weâre
more resilient, human, and creative than we
thought. Learning how to serve online took time,
but I started to notice that the small moments
were adding up. The intentional follow-up
emails, hosting global innovators meetups to
bring people together, creating free resilience
guides, making music to celebrate innovatorsâ
stories, and creating mascots to tell the story
of creativity in a new way all brought us closer
to helping one more innovator, team, or
company who was feeling burned out, stressed
and fatigued. It reminded me of how every
small decision creates a powerful ripple effect.
So yes, while the pandemic marked a halt to
our pre-2020 growth, on looking back, it also
helped us to grow in a transformative way that
I had already been longing for. It pushed me
to reconsider the power of small decisions,
including making the time to look back at the
past three years, even as we look at how we
want to develop with you in the future.
We may not know what life will give us, but
we can always choose to be the protagonist
and decide what to do, how to respond, and
how to live the life we want in any situation.
Looking back, Iâm reminded of this key fact: we
always have a choice, even in moments when
it feels like we donât. Even when youâre facing
a pandemic that makes you feel powerless,
the choice is always yours. You can make your
dream a reality, but you have to work with
intention.
I humbly share our past three-year journey, in
commitment to continuing those small decisions
to make this world a better place with you. I
hope this reflection encourages you to join us
in the coming years as we move boundaries,
help more people around the world, and teach
them how to meet their full potential, no matter
where they are or how they use their creativity.

Sincerely,
Monica H. Kang

3 YEARS IN REVIEW
In three years, we expanded our capacity and capabilities as we deepened our agility, humility, and creativity. Some things didnât go as planned, and a
lot of things grew faster than we thought. While initially, the pandemic felt like a full force stopper to our rapid growth, a year later, we found ourselves
wiser and scaling our services further.

6. People come to us to change something important that felt impossible
before. How can we build a happy culture or a fast-growing team that
feels like one? How can we stay creative when we donât feel like we
can trust each other? How can we work better together while working
remotely? I get a twinkle in my eyes when I hear these questions. While
the how and the what may differ in every project we work on, all projects
stem from people wanting to bring out the best in each other. A desire for
good culture, leadership, and team building stems from people wanting
to be understood, valued, and loved for who they truly are. Weâre hungry
to be seen as human beings in the workplace, not just cogs with stringent
stations doomed to transactional relationships. This is why the more
difficult questions we get with each project, the deeper I challenge myself
and my team to reflect on how we can understand people and bring out
the best in them. This is the nuance that Iâm grateful to have embraced in
the past few yearsâprioritizing growth within ourselves so that we can be
a better partner to our clients and communities. If we arenât growing as
a company, as teams, and as people, how can we help others to see how
they can grow? Looking back, there were three things in particular that we
doubled down our efforts on.
BUILDING OUR NICHE
Innovation is a broad space. We knew we could do a lot of different
things in it, but to serve our audience best, it was important for us to
dive deeper into a niche. This is why we decided to specialize in creative
workplace and people development. No matter who we worked with, it all
came back to the same key questions:
» How can we build a creative workplace where everyone is free to thrive?
» How can we encourage more empathetic, creative, and caring leaders?
» How can we offer more tools and resources to help build creative
resilience?
While the projects we undertook with NBCUniversal, Dell, Bristol Myers
Squibb, Johns Hopkins University, Freddie Mac, PepsiCo, One America,
Georgia Tech University, and the Asian Leadership Conference were all
different and unique, they were all connected to the niche in which we
hoped to serveâhelping to create a workplace where all could thrive
and be creative. This meant honing how we deliver our services but also
exploring how workshops, facilitation, and coaching could be expanded
and repositioned. A lot of our worksheets stemmed from conversations
we had with clients, who told us that they were so busy in day-to-day
life that there wasnât time to develop businesses as they wished toâ
strategically and intentionally. I understood that feeling all too well. The
busier we get and the faster we grow, the more we forget that every
interaction is an opportunity to connect, rethink, or get hurt. So from
our client delivery to project management, we put a lot of care into
doing more with less and designing the process to bring more ease and
playfulness to our clientsâ journey into adopting creative culture. Changing
the way we work takes time, so we must consider new ways of working
that feel enjoyable and stress-free. This is why over the past three years,
while our projects were diverse, we were also more selective, in order to
give our full focus to the culture, leadership, and team-building programs
where our clients needed help. Weâre honored to have been their guide
in adopting a workplace for all, and we look forward to honing our craft
further and helping other leaders to build their new workplace homes.

DOING MORE BY TRAVELING LESS
Even before the pandemic, I was hungry to explore how we could do
more without travel. At the time, I was traveling domestically (weekly) and
internationally (quarterly). Thatâs not healthy or sustainable, and while
our team is fully remote and working well across all time zones, I wasnât
able to give them full development support, as I was busy traveling,
networking, and doing business development. When the pandemic forced
us to stop all travel, the digital service development and creative content
ideas I had put on hold for a long time finally came into full ideation and
development. In fact, in 2020â2021, my schedule did a 180-degree turn
as I went from weekly plane travel to a single flight for the entire year.
Everything else was done online.
Monica delivers! Her deep subject-matter expertise combined with
her creativity, flexibility, and empathy make Monica an unbeatable
facilitator. Monica is exceptionally skilled at meeting both people
and business needs. She crafted an outstanding webinar for my
company, and I would gladly work with her again.
- Middle Border Forward
It wasnât easy at first. When we were first forced to cut out travel, we
lost 90% of our business because we didnât have an alternative program
online. I wasnât comfortable using Zoom and only downloaded it for the
first time in March 2020. Now, 18 months later, we are finding more
effective, easier ways to connect with our clients even when working
remotely with one another. In the past, I could only do one project at a
time, as we couldnât be in multiple locations. But today, we serve clients
in South Korea, catch up with team members in London, and do multiple
client workshops and coaching sessions within the same day! Plus,
reducing travel costs meant I could invest that back into digital assets
such as more worksheets, creative productions like podcasts, music,
and games, and more internal resources to permit cross-collaboration
between the InnovatorsBox teams. Iâm really excited to see how we can
continue to serve more clients and communities while finding more
creative ways to help access creativity learning and play at work.
HOW WE GREW WITH OUR PEOPLE AND PARTNERS
Weâve also grown our team during the pandemic and have team
members from 7 different countries and cities including Colombia,
Canada, Spain, Indonesia, South Korea, United States, and the United
Kingdom.

In 2018 we were mapping out a new program, and in need of a
facilitator for a key partâthe Innovation Slam. When we came

I was introduced to Monica through a mutual friend. We began
talking about her work with organizations to achieve creativity and
innovation. Our work is educating the next generation of leaders,
and we invite leaders like Monica to teach and lead conversations
with young leaders.
After
Monica consistently delivers in two areas. First, she creates a safe
space for young leaders to talk about their shared experiences and
challenges, such as career development and network engagement,
and receive support from their peers. Second, Monica guides our
young leaders to step out of their comfort zones and think more
creatively. This helps them communicate more effectively and
become more impactful.

14. BUILDING MORE WITHIN
All of this growth was possible because we spent a lot of time looking
inward. What kind of culture did we want to build at InnovatorsBox?
What did we want to speak up about in society? Who did we want to
bring onto our team and why? How could we have workflows that
empower our people? As our team grew from five to twenty across seven
countries, I realized how important it was to invest more time inward and
really listen, in order to improve how we do things every day. Without
a strong internal structure of our own, how could we help others build
their foundations? With that in mind, we spent a lot of time listening,
optimizing, and improving how we work, how we show up, and how we
listen to one another. Thatâs where all the new magic evolved and how
it fueled our creativity and innovation in how we serveâall while having
fun.
Two priorities stood out that helped to build the culture we have
today. First was listening and creating spaces for team members to
speak up. The best ideas, such as our quarterly team meetings, Slack
implementation, and new operational processes, started because our
team members asked for them. Our people continue to express how
they wanted more time to get to know each other and work together.
That led to finding more ways to include different team members in
projects, as well as initiating our IB BackStage blog series. In August 2021,
in celebration of our 6-year company birthday, we started highlighting a
different team member every Monday to share why they do what they
do and why they love it. This permitted everyone to share their thoughts
with others, who may not otherwise have known the depth and care they
have brought into the team!
Our second priority was optimizing workflow to bring out the best
in everyone. I loved the question that one of our colleagues raised:
âHow can work feel more like play?â When we work based on our
strengths and see opportunities to voice our thoughts, it feels more
fun. Our voices matter, and we are more likely to contribute and
create! So, we spent a lot of time learning more about each other and
our strengths, communication styles, work styles, and preferences for
project bandwidth. Weâre all in different time zones, on different project
plans, with different communication styles. Having one workflow and
forcing everyone to follow it isnât enjoyable or productive. So as the
project manager and arranger lead, I focused on optimizing every step
we could to make everything more pleasant and easier to do. If we are
coordinating eight people to get one thing done, how can we streamline
the process so that all eight people have clarity on where the project is
going? This permitted us to explore new software and workflows that not
only brought out team membersâ strengths but left us all feeling better
able to grow because we were enjoying what we were doing. Personally,
I know that what I was able to do in the past three years was significantly
greater than what I used to think because I focused on amplifying my own
strengths and those of my team. I canât wait to bring out our voices even
more as we continue to grow together in the coming years.

16. CREATING MORE FOR SCALE
We also thought a lot about how we could scale impact. How can we
help more clients to create a happy workplace? How can we help more
innovators to build their creative muscles? The pandemic pushed us
to reimagine scale and sustainable impact. Not only have we learned
to serve online, but weâve been challenged to rethink what tools and
resources we can invest in that will really help innovators and leaders
to rethink growth, even when theyâre not sitting in a workshop. This
question led us to host virtual Global Innovators Meetups and create
space for innovators around the world to connect, producing creative
content (in the form of podcasts, music, videos, cooking shows, childrenâs
books, and games) that inspires our audience to rethink how they can be
creative, no matter what they do. It also led to the birth of InnovatorsBox
Academy, where we launched online training courses such as Rethink
Facilitation, Rethink Diversity, and Rethink Leading, and InnovatorsBox
Studios, which produces original music, podcasts, videos, and more! The
challenge of finding different ways to learn outside of a workshop and
make learning feel like play inspired us to reimagine learning itself. We
got to experiment and build a lot of new content, which empowered
both existing and new fans around the world to realize that they are not
alone. We look forward to continuing to challenge methods of learning
and training, ever-redefining content consumption on a global level.
Of course, we plan to do all of this while still expanding our workshop,
coaching, facilitation, and consulting services to scale.
âWe are always pushing the edge with training facilitation to
empower youth and equip caring adults to better build relationships
so in learning about InnovatorsBox and the training techniques it
provides, it was an easy choice to use Monicaâs materials to inform
our work with youth and adults. We will use these products in
our virtual and in-person training workshops to provide a great
experience for all involved.â

GIVING FIRST
While weâve always been a give-first company, we focused more on this
aspect during the pandemic. While we lost 90% of our initial review in
Spring 2021, we still dove deep and tried to help others as much as we
could. We created remote working EQ guides and meeting tip resources,
as everyone was struggling to stay connected online. We created global
meetups and mindset workshops to bring innovators together and
remind them that they could do this. We also created a product donation
campaign in Fall 2020, donating over 600+ InnovatorsBox card games to
over 20+ organizations in the United States to make creativity learning
accessible and permit diverse communities to find connectivity, creativity,
and courage with one another. These efforts were made to serve our
community and let us continue to do what we do best: transform our
society into a more creative, people-first, culture-centric place. Weâre
so happy to hear how these contributions made a difference in these
communities! It encourages us to create even more tools that will help
others to find the courage and reimagine how they thrive at work.

17. WE WANT TO IMPROVE TOO
While weâre proud of all that weâve done and humbled by the recognition
and support, we know that thereâs still a lot of room for growth. Weâre
eager to continue growing and learning to be a better partner, a better
company, and better people, serving innovators like you around the
world.
A few things that we still struggle with but hope to do better at are:
(1) Consistent community development and
(2) Finding our audiences faster
While weâve provided a lot of community programs since 2016, serving
high-quality programs, events, and content consistently (for free) requires
a lot of attention and details that we havenât been able to do well
enough. Not having a dedicated team member to focus on community
development has sometimes made it hard to continue at full steam
when we get busy with client projects and other internal development.
Weâve also been more mindful not to allow team burnout, as I found
myself getting tired, forced to post articles on schedule. In order to
focus on providing content that was truly driven by joy, we let go of the
expectation that it had to be done monthly or on a certain timeline.
While our monthly newsletter is one space that weâve kept up regularly
since 2016, weâd love to get better at producing other resources to serve
our audiences more consistently. We also want to improve at reaching
our new fans and communities. As we continue to work online, itâs
become important to make our tools and resources more accessible and
easier to understand, as we canât explain them in person in a conference
hallway like we used to. Describing the importance of peopleâs work
and culture development is a marathon project, and at times, I realize I
need to do a better job explaining in order to find the people who need
our support faster. At the same time, while serving online has made it
easier, there are still a lot of barriers to timeline accessâlike working
with certain time zones or internet access situations. As we continue to
support our clients and new fans, we hope to find more ways to make
creativity learning accessible, playful, and sustainable, no matter where
they are.
Our intention is to help billions upskill with creativity, and we know that
all of our efforts will help make a difference to someone out there who
really needs this support to rethink creativity and thrive.

18. THE YEARS AHEAD
What will really matter ten years from now? Now that six years have
passed, Iâd argue itâs not the how but the why that matters. Just when I
thought that the year-long projects made the most difference, Iâd get an
email from a fan sharing how a podcast episode we did a few months
back gave them the confidence to speak up for the first time. Itâs a
humble reminder that you never know how you can help others find new
courage and perspective. So, Iâve stopped overthinking about what will
be impactful or not. Everything you do can make an impact if you focus
on that one audience or individual that really needs it. Whether itâs a
free resource guide (like the one we made during the pandemic to help
remote EQ building) or a year-long culture development program where
clients share how this is the first time theyâve felt safe to talk about their
workplace challenges, all engagements matter equally when you put in
the intention. Thatâs how I want to move forward at InnovatorsBoxâas
a company that treats all steps as equally important catalysts for new
thinking and hope.
One thing the pandemic affirmed is how fast the way we work evolves
and how much we all hunger to connect as human beings. As our
surroundings change and push us to adapt how we serve, we commit to
staying true to our why and making sure that everything we do is really
helping to unlock creativity for all. Looking at the next few years and what
we hope to accomplish, Iâm excited to focus on our consistent dedication
to growing together with you. So whether you work with us in year-long
culture and leadership training programs or see us at Spotify, YouTube,
GIPHY, or even in Hollywood one day, I hope weâll register as the same
heartwarming friend who wants to bring more color and possibility to
the world and help everyone to live their best lives, no matter where they
work or live. Weâll continue to listen more carefully and work harder to
note how we can help you as you grapple with all the questions regarding
the future of work. Upskilling and reskilling for the future will only
increase, but how we learn has to evolve even faster. This is why, as we
continue to provide quality custom culture, leadership, and team-building
programs, we look forward to diving deeper into podcasts, music, games,
and other creative storytelling content and services to make creativity
access and learning more fun, available, and relatable. We hope that
through these developments, youâll learn more about your creativity
while you play. All we ask in return is this: Please continue to work
with us to help make this world shine with more color. For some,
that means continuing to invest in your teamâs creative thinking and safe
room building, while for others, itâs learning how to step into your voice
of courage as who you really are. Wherever you may be, I want to remind
you that you matter, and your voice matters. Thank you for taking this
journey with us. We look forward to unlocking more possibilities together.
GRATITUDE
Weâre here today because of you. Thank you for all of your support, care,
and trust in our mission to help unlock creativity for all. I want to give a
special shoutout to our team in particular, both old and new members.
In the past six years, weâve had over thirty different people come and
go, and without their touch and care in what we do, we wouldnât be the
company we are today. The same goes for our dedicated fans, friends,
families, and clients who go out of their way to share their love, thoughts,
and feedback. I thank you for helping us continue to be better people and
a better team. Thank you also for your support and care in the future,
because knowing that you are here with us gives us the courage to step
into tomorrow with a bolder vision and intentions. Letâs paint this world
with more possibilities and perspectives together.
