Barnet Big Society Innovation Bank
Big Society - individuals, groups and organisations taking control of the things that really matter to them.
Innovation - something new to Barnet, or at least a new method of delivery
3. TIME IS RUNNING OUT
By 2016 Barnet will have 23% more 5-14 year olds & 17% more people over 90.!
If things carry on the same, by 2023 the council won't have money for anything except for social care.!

“
ABOUT LIVING

”
..
...but I never invite my friends round, there's nothing to do.
This sounds like an invitation to do something new. Right?
CONNECTEDNESS
6. Who's still
missing the
connection?
Large numbers of people missing out on the digital revolution in Burnt Oak.
There must be a business opportunity in this.
CONNECTEDNESS
7. Widening gap between
rich & poor
Average house prices 10x the median income.
Fewer people know their neighbours and anti-social behaviour is a worry for many people.
COMMUNITY
8. 40,000
VOLUNTEERS
Only 35% residents feel involved in local decision making (compared with 50% London average).
Yet an enormous 40,000 Barnet residents are volunteers.
COMMUNITY
9. Youth
unemployment
more than
doubled since
2008
The Council has created 22,500 new jobs at Brent Cross Cricklewood, but 4.4% of 16-18 year olds are still NEET.
WORK & ENTERPRISE
10. Business

London
Barnet is an enterprising borough with all the opportunities that brings.
WORK & ENTERPRISE
14. Uncovering unmet needs
Afia Kamal saw that many women in the Manchester Asian community needed to improve their health but
weren't using local facilities. With a few simple changes she transformed cultural expectations around
exercise to make it easily accessible.

15. UNLOCKING NEW
CARING capacity
Elderplan is a health insurer running a timebank where members gain time credits for supporting other
Elderplan subscribers. Elderplan found that volunteering to support others had such a positive impact on the
volunteer's own health that they allow members to pay 25% of their insurance premiums with time credits.

16. New kinds of
relationships
Slivers of time is a market place for short, one-off jobs for people who don't have the time for 9-5 work.
Flexible re-entry to the work place has proven very effective for many long-term unemployed people.

17. strategy
User needs and Long term sources
desires of revenue
Connect user needs to income streams
Barnet Big Society Innovation Bank is not about ongoing grant funding. It's about giving people a leg up to
start something that can be sustained. from a financial perspectve that probably means either creating
something that the council would like to commission, or something that individuals value enough to pay for.
18. Learn from
your target
market
Go out and talk to people you think might want your idea
Who else can you learn from?
Use this information to improve your idea and show that
people want it
USER INSIGHT
19. Push your
imagination
How would the world be if everybody was in my target market?
Can I make any of that happen?
What are the resources of the people and organisations involved in my idea?
How can I make the most of those resources?
IMAGINATION
20. Get
critical
feedback
on your
idea
Remember, 'I like it' is about the most useless
piece of feedback you can have. Ask
questions that generate answers that tell you
what you need to work on
