May – August, 2013: Promoting the Rhodope Wild Flower Festival among the communities in the
location of Upper Arda River Valley and motivate their participation in the events of the Festival,
presenting the floristic diversity in the Rhodope region, on one hand, and on the other hand – to
improve their economic gains by better presentation of the traditional knowledge of the communities
on flower and herb use (in traditional culinary products, making balms, herbal drinks, etc.). Cresta
EOOD also carried a follow-up survey on the impact of the Festival upon improving local communities’
awareness on plant diversity in the Rhodope Mountains and the impact of the Festival on motivation
of tourist visits in the location from other regions of the country. Environmental organization “Rhodope”
- Smolyan was the beneficiary of the Culture 2007-2013 Programme grant for the project entitled “The

Activities: Planning, preparation and management of projects for Smolyan Municipality, funded by EU and other
international programs, including EAA grants, the bilateral Norway-BG and Swiss-BG programs. Project application
development and management of municipal project teams, implementing projects funded by the national
operational programs – Regional Development, Environmentt, Technical Assistance, the pre-accession Phare CBC
Bulgaria Greece 2000-2006 and the ETC GR-BG 2007-2013. Responsible for planning and carrying out public
forums by the local community-lead development approach as an instrument for long-term public policies
formulation at local and regional level in order to improve transparency in public administration operation and
improving the range and quality of services delivered to citizens and businesses. Directly responsible for
identification, planning and implementing municipal tourism development policies and of planning and implementing
the annual Municipal Tourism Develipment and Promotion Action plans. Projects:
 2004 – 2005: Drafting a Strategy for Tourism Development in Smolyan Municipality,
based on diversification of existing tourism services supply, building new specialized tourist infrastructures to
support diversification planned, branding the territory and preparation of cross-border tourist trails that would
connect to identical trails on the Greek territory after Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. The project was implemented
in partnership with Bulgarian Alternative Tourism Association and Regional Tourist Association “Rhodope” –
Smolyan.
 2006- 2007: Development and Management of projects for creation of new tourist
products in Smolyan Municipality , with the financial support of Phare CBC Bulgaria-Greece
2000-2006 pre-accession programme:
Development of project application and implementation of project “Rhodope Biodiversity – Life
Underground and in the Daylight”, in partnership with the Local Authorities Union – Xanthi (LAUX) and Extreeme
Tourism and Spleology Club “Mursalitsa” – Smolyan. The purpose was to explore caves in Upper Arda River Valley
and consequently built tourism trails offering adventure tourism opportunities and trails presenting the biodiversity in
the mountains. The project applied an integrated approach to product development including scientific activities –
caving expeditions to explore and assess the potential of wild caves in the area, on-the-site survey toby ihtiologists,
ornithologists, fauna and flora experts to identify habitats to be included in the six hiking trails to be created, an ex-
ante assessment of impact of expected tourist flow upon the rare and protected species habitats in the area,
selection of caves and habitats to be presented within the new adventure and biodiversity product; clearing the
tracks of the trails and placing information and guiding signs along them, establishing rest places along tracks with
shades, benches, panoramic view platforms; renovating a premises in Smilyan village (at the entrance of the
location) and turning it into a Tourist Visitor Center with interactive facilities for environmental education of kids, a
reception area and a training and meeting hall; training of 10 young people to acquire qualifications for mountain
guides and speleologic guides; supply of specialised speleology equipment to make for tourists taking guided tours
in wild caves, or benefiting the via ferrata, alpine pendulum, the alpine trolley, all established within the project;
marketing and promotion activities – design and printing of leaflets, brochures for the new six trails established and
producing six short movies promoting the new products offered; presentations at regional and national tourism fairs,
exchanges and events. The new six tourist trails were designed in a way that allows their connection to existing
hiking trails in the Greek part of the Rhodope Mountains after Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. The project generated
A Common Action Plan for Green Tourism Routes for the period 2007-2010, to set harmonised standards for cross-
border tourist trails and routs and be the basis for future applications of both Bulgarian and Greek project partners.
Trainingg of
 Development and Implementation Management of project “Momchil’s Fortress – Myth and
Reality” in partnership with Samothraki Municipality, Greece. The project set a bench mark for Smolyan region for
restoration, conservation and socialisation of archaeology sites for tourism as Momchil’s fortress is the first
archaeological site in the region to be socialised and promoted as part of the tourism opportunities to visitors. It
included finalization of archaeological excavations at the site, design and implementation of works – conservation
and restoration of fortress’ gate-tower and partially of its two side flanks, signification of a Thracian sanctuary at the
top of the fortress hinterland, building the track and access facilities within the archaeological site, building a 1,6 km
car and buss road from Gradat village to the foothill of the fortress, a parking lot and a small Visitor reception area
near the parking lot, as well as the trail from the parking lot to the top of the hill where the Gate tower and the
fortress are located. Road guiding signs signifying distance and location o Momchill Fortress were placed
alongside all national network roads –providing access to it. A set of printed promotion and a movie on a DVD
carrier were produced to inform visitors of the role of the Fortress for the difference of the Second Bulgarian state
in the years of Ottoman Invasion, and its connection to Peritor Fortress near Avdera, Xanthi and the fortress above
Hora, Samotraki island.
Development and Implementation Management of projects within ETC Greece – Bulgaria 2007-2013
Program:
 THRABYZHE „Thracian and Byzantine Cultural Heritage in the Rhodope Mountains and the
northern Aegean Sea coast” in partnership with Samothraki Municipality, Greece, and Smolyan Regional
History Museum, Contracted 2011, completed 2013. Via THRABYZHE first phase of conservation and restoration
works of two fortresses – Kaleto , above Smolyan and Kaleto at Passage Cave near Koshnitsa village – were
accomplish, as well as footwalking access to the two archaeological sites was built, with the corresponding resting
places, shades, panoramic view platforms , marking of the trails and signifying key historical spots within the
fortresses wit information boards. Though partially, their restoration, along with that of Momchil Fortress in 2007,
allowed the municipality to launch the first historical tourism route within its territory – THE GARDIAN TRIANGLE
OF SMOLYAN – based on the visits to the three fortifications and their history in Antiquity and in Middle Ages. A
map with a sets of cultural tours based on Thracian and on Byzantine heritages sights in the cross-border area,
appropriate for organized groups or for fly and drive tourists was developed, published and distributed along with
a promotional movie. Two info-tours for tour operators and specialized tourism media were organized in to present
the suggested cultural routes.. Archaelogists from smolyan History Museum made a terrain registration of non-
surveyed till then areas in the formerly closed border area, and based on their finds and finds in the archaeological
funds of the museum a database of Thracian and of Byzantine heritages sights and exponents was developed
with two level of access: restricted – only for museum scientists and explorers, and public – accessible to all
visitors of museum web-site – either being students in History and Tourism, or tourists interested in heritage sights.
Within the project a scientific conference on Thracian and on Byzantine history was held to promote further
scientific interests in the heritage of the CB region. Two specialized scientific publications were circulated – a
collection of reports presented during the conference and a Best Case Book on projects for utilization of cultural
resources to add value to tourism in the cross-border region.

Projects:  2004 – 2005: Drafting a Strategy for Tourism Development in Smolyan Municipality, based on diversification of existing tourism services supply, building new specialized tourist infrastructures to support diversification planned, branding the territory and preparation of cross-border tourist trails that would connect to identical trails on the Greek territory after Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. The project was implemented in partnership with Bulgarian Alternative Tourism Association and Regional Tourist Association “Rhodope” – Smolyan.  2006- 2007: Development and Management of projects for creation of new tourist products in Smolyan Municipality , with the financial support of Phare CBC Bulgaria-Greece 2000-2006 pre-accession programme: Development of project application and implementation of project “Rhodope Biodiversity – Life Underground and in the Daylight”, in partnership with the Local Authorities Union – Xanthi (LAUX) and Extreeme Tourism and Spleology Club “Mursalitsa” – Smolyan. The purpose was to explore caves in Upper Arda River Valley and consequently built tourism trails offering adventure tourism opportunities and trails presenting the biodiversity in the mountains. The project applied an integrated approach to product development including scientific activities – caving expeditions to explore and assess the potential of wild caves in the area, on-the-site survey toby ihtiologists, ornithologists, fauna and flora experts to identify habitats to be included in the six hiking trails to be created, an ex- ante assessment of impact of expected tourist flow upon the rare and protected species habitats in the area, selection of caves and habitats to be presented within the new adventure and biodiversity product; clearing the tracks of the trails and placing information and guiding signs along them, establishing rest places along tracks with shades, benches, panoramic view platforms; renovating a premises in Smilyan village (at the entrance of the location) and turning it into a Tourist Visitor Center with interactive facilities for environmental education of kids, a reception area and a training and meeting hall; training of 10 young people to acquire qualifications for mountain guides and speleologic guides; supply of specialised speleology equipment to make for tourists taking guided tours in wild caves, or benefiting the via ferrata, alpine pendulum, the alpine trolley, all established within the project; marketing and promotion activities – design and printing of leaflets, brochures for the new six trails established and producing six short movies promoting the new products offered; presentations at regional and national tourism fairs, exchanges and events. The new six tourist trails were designed in a way that allows their connection to existing hiking trails in the Greek part of the Rhodope Mountains after Bulgaria’s accession to the EU. The project generated A Common Action Plan for Green Tourism Routes for the period 2007-2010, to set harmonised standards for cross- border tourist trails and routs and be the basis for future applications of both Bulgarian and Greek project partners. Trainingg of  Development and Implementation Management of project “Momchil’s Fortress – Myth and Reality” in partnership with Samothraki Municipality, Greece. The project set a bench mark for Smolyan region for restoration, conservation and socialisation of archaeology sites for tourism as Momchil’s fortress is the first archaeological site in the region to be socialised and promoted as part of the tourism opportunities to visitors. It included finalization of archaeological excavations at the site, design and implementation of works – conservation and restoration of fortress’ gate-tower and partially of its two side flanks, signification of a Thracian sanctuary at the top of the fortress hinterland, building the track and access facilities within the archaeological site, building a 1,6 km car and buss road from Gradat village to the foothill of the fortress, a parking lot and a small Visitor reception area near the parking lot, as well as the trail from the parking lot to the top of the hill where the Gate tower and the fortress are located. Road guiding signs signifying distance and location o Momchill Fortress were placed alongside all national network roads –providing access to it. A set of printed promotion and a movie on a DVD carrier were produced to inform visitors of the role of the Fortress for the difference of the Second Bulgarian state in the years of Ottoman Invasion, and its connection to Peritor Fortress near Avdera, Xanthi and the fortress above Hora, Samotraki island. Development and Implementation Management of projects within ETC Greece – Bulgaria 2007-2013 Program:  THRABYZHE „Thracian and Byzantine Cultural Heritage in the Rhodope Mountains and the northern Aegean Sea coast” in partnership with Samothraki Municipality, Greece, and Smolyan Regional History Museum, Contracted 2011, completed 2013. Via THRABYZHE first phase of conservation and restoration works of two fortresses – Kaleto , above Smolyan and Kaleto at Passage Cave near Koshnitsa village – were accomplish, as well as footwalking access to the two archaeological sites was built, with the corresponding resting places, shades, panoramic view platforms , marking of the trails and signifying key historical spots within the fortresses wit information boards. Though partially, their restoration, along with that of Momchil Fortress in 2007, allowed the municipality to launch the first historical tourism route within its territory – THE GARDIAN TRIANGLE OF SMOLYAN – based on the visits to the three fortifications and their history in Antiquity and in Middle Ages. A map with a sets of cultural tours based on Thracian and on Byzantine heritages sights in the cross-border area, appropriate for organized groups or for fly and drive tourists was developed, published and distributed along with a promotional movie. Two info-tours for tour operators and specialized tourism media were organized in to present the suggested cultural routes.. Archaelogists from smolyan History Museum made a terrain registration of non- surveyed till then areas in the formerly closed border area, and based on their finds and finds in the archaeological funds of the museum a database of Thracian and of Byzantine heritages sights and exponents was developed with two level of access: restricted – only for museum scientists and explorers, and public – accessible to all visitors of museum web-site – either being students in History and Tourism, or tourists interested in heritage sights. Within the project a scientific conference on Thracian and on Byzantine history was held to promote further scientific interests in the heritage of the CB region. Two specialized scientific publications were circulated – a collection of reports presented during the conference and a Best Case Book on projects for utilization of cultural resources to add value to tourism in the cross-border region.
