Badges increasingly being used to encourage continued
'brand engagement' online
– e.g. Four Square, Quidco,

Also used to represent achievement within a domain
– e.g games (XBox, Playstation, Steam [PC])
•
However, all separate
•
'Open Badges' allows badges from multiple sources to be
gathered together

6. Why the buzz about Open Badges for
Education?

Growing recognition that lots of learning happens outside
the classroom
•
Grade transcripts hide the 'truth' about learning
•
Strong links with current trends such as MOOCs,
Gamification, Mobile Learning
– but can be used independently of these

Significant motivational potential in some situations

would support both individual and competitive goals
Why?
– To stand out when apply for jobs
– To help students monitor their progress
• personal and relative to peers
– To recognise effort in formative tasks

But, important not to issue too many
– each badge must represent a genuine achievement
