Baggage Checked-in with RFID at HKIA
An RFID-enabled Sorter Monitoring System to
enhance the existing system in the monitoring and
controlling of baggage sorting and loading
processes
Benefits achieved
♦ Customer service with transparent operation and
accurate baggage delivery
♦ Enhanced operational efficiency and capacity of BHS
Deployment experience
♦ About 40,000 bags, 90% of all departing bags, from
around 50 airlines use the new baggage tags each
day
♦ Improved read-rate: accuracy reaches 97% vs 80% by
barcode only

A large scale transportation hub in HK---RFID Baggage Handling System
In 2006, the client recruited ETIC to improve the baggage delivery service level in the baggage handling system. ETIC team, working with engineers, studied the baggage handling process and devised an RFID-based technical solution. Subsequently, ETIC implemented an end-to-end solution, namely, RFID-enabled Sorter Monitoring System, includes both hardware integration and software development. This solution has been running at the baggage hall that processing more than 600,000 baggage per day, since its launch in early 2007. The solution effectively improves the baggage handling service level.
2. A large scale transportation hub in HK---Fault-Tolerant System for RFID Baggage Handling
In 2008, the client drives a series of improvement projects to expand its baggage handling capacity. ETIC has participated in these projects to provide its expertise in both system software development as well as RFID engineering work. In the project, ETIC has developed a fault-tolerant system application that effectively extends the processing power of the baggage handling core system to cope with the target baggage handling capacity. At the same time, another ETIC team is constructing an RFID solution in the newly-added facility. The project is in the mid of the system integration testing and targets to complete and rollout for production by end of 2009.
3. A renounced local bank in Hong Kong
In 2006, ETIC acted as a System Integrator to deploy an RFID Document Tracking solution for a listed bank’s mortgage loan division. ETIC provided the RFiDY middleware together with the hardware including RFID readers and labels.
4. The Main Library of The University of Hong Kong
In 2008, ETIC introduced the RFID Library System at the Main Library of The University of Hong Kong. The RFID system is integrated with Innopac Library Management System via SIP2 interface. Over one million of books were tagged in the library; the solutions provided by ETIC included 3 units of circulation stations, 5 units of self-check kiosks, 1 unit of return box and 4 units of RFID handheld inventory systems for stocktaking and book searching. This technology improves economic efficiency and provides cost saving measures, while at the same time providing better protection of library resources. In addition, the use of RFID reduces the amount of time required to perform circulation operations. The most significant time savings are attributable to the facts that information can be read from RFID tags much faster than from barcodes and that several items in a stack can be read at the same time.
5. Wing Hung Group
ETIC implemented an RFID inventory system using RFiDY middleware to support different RFID devices.
6.RFID Library Management Solution
A Secondary School at HK Island
ETIC integrated the RFID Library Management System with the existing LibraryMaster library management system.
The RFID System includes a librarian station, a self check station, an inventory handheld device and a security gate.
ETIC converted ~20,000 books/CD/DVD from barcodes to RFID label tags.
7. RFID Educational Starter Kit
-NLSI Lui Kwok Pat Fong College
-Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Kwok Yat Wai College
-Kwun Tong Kung Lok Government Secondary School
The schools apply RFID Educational Started Kit as a teaching material to demonstrate RFID basic technology concept to their students.
8. Toppan Forms ---RFID Asset and Document Management Solutions
The client installed the solutions in their demo center to illustrate RFID applications
