2. EU DEFINITION –NEXT GENERATION ACCESS
2
The term next generation access (NGA) is commonly
used to describe the requirement of fibre coming closer
to the end-user, or providing the direct connection. As a
result, the copper or cable wire is to a larger extent or
fully replaced with fibre-optic technology. Wireless
technologies can also be considered as
NGAs. Indeed, wireless can provide a vital
option to extend and improve broadband
coverage.

Feasibility testing was performed against the following criteria
• Chosen technology must be capable of NGA speeds (>30Mbs)
• Chosen technology must be able to maintain these criteria even in
relatively high destiny deployments (Individual modulation)
• Chosen technology must be spectrally efficient to allow for expansion,
possibility of 5GHz backhaul and UK compliance (GPS Sync / 20MHz band)
• Chosen technology must be discrete with a small physical footprint (Listed
buildings etc.)
• Chosen technology must not be cost prohibitive for domestic roll out
Cambium’s PMP 450 was the best fit for our criteria

Further testing during deployment (in conjunction with University of Hull)
• Limits of the technology in LoS, nLoS and NLoS
• Limits of the technology in attenuating and non-attenuating geo types
• Limits of the technologies in different deployment densities
• Comparisons with other technologies (including emerging technologies)

Pilot Outcomes
• To what % can wireless technologies deliver superfast services in Phase 3
• To what % can wireless technologies deliver basic services in Phase 3 and of what
quality
• What is the true cost of delivering into the final percentile
• Hopefully a blue print to deliver true superfast services to as many people as
possible in that last 5%
