This document summarizes Friendship's approach to transitioning vulnerable communities from emergency aid to resilience and development. It uses a holistic approach involving community groups, local government, and NGOs. Interventions include capacity building, demonstrations, savings programs, and advocacy. Outcomes include infrastructure development, increased savings and assets, and more families accessing social programs. Challenges include low literacy rates and needing more advocacy meetings.

Founded in Bangladesh in 2002 by Runa Khan,
Friendship is an international Social Purpose Organisation
guided by a vision of a world where people — especially the
hard-to-reach and unaddressed — have equal opportunities to
live with dignity and hope.
Friendship works together with vulnerable communities
in a holistic and needs-based approach with 4
commitments: Saving Lives, Poverty Alleviation, Climate
Adaptation and Empowerment.

Our Approach:

4. Why Transition Fund
An initiative to bridge the gap between the immediate
disaster aids (relief) and development.
Targeted communities:
the ultra-poor with no capital for starting income
generation nor even be entitled to enter the normal
microfinance system
no knowledge of their ecosystem in terms of rights,
facilities, techniques or govt resources
Linkages and advocacy to ensure some infrastructure
needed for the community from the Govt

5. Interventions
Improve economic opportunities for the
underprivileged people through capacity building,
using modern technology and financial support.
Ensure access to governmental and financial
institutions in order to receive all support given by
these institutions to its citizens to improve their
livelihood condition.
Advocacy to address geographic poverty and
improve local infrastructure.

6. Friendship Disaster Management
Committees (FDMC)
FDMC = community groups to
exchange ideas, learning and develop the skills,
strengthen community preparedness in case of disaster,
raise awareness and empower communities to better
adapt to climate change.

On-farm demonstrations are one of
the most effective education tools for
teaching the most appropriate
farming techniques, to test and
demonstrate new methods side by
side with traditional methods

10. Trainings and Capacity Building
Training for soil preparation
Training on making of organic
pesticides and fertilizer
Homestead gardening with appropriate farming
techniques such as fertilization, irrigation and pest
control as well as seeds treatment and storage for
later use.

11. Livelihood support with livestock
 Livestock distribution = first good
step out of poverty
 Livestock brings daily income,
high productivity, high selling
value and low feeding cost.

12. Training of Para-Veterinarians
Livestock distribution is pointless if animals are not properly cared for
Animal Health Worker from within the communities trained to
 increase productivity by controlling or preventing animal illnesses
 improve animal husbandry practices
 provide vaccination, primary health care, castration, etc.
 inform farmers on various livestock issues and proper fodder
cultivation

13. Poverty Maps
 Poverty maps identify the main causes of poverty and
vulnerability due to geographical or related to lack of
infrastructure
 Based on the poverty maps, local communities can
prioritise problems and find feasible solutions.

14. Friendship Civil Society Groups (FCSG)
 To discuss any social, family, land rights, etc.
 To raise awareness for women and inform them about their legal and
civil rights, existing legal aid, family and social issues and education.
 A direct outcome is the increase of the government's social safety net.

15. Char Theater Show
To sensitize local people more widely on issues such as early marriage,
domestic violence, social stigma, government legal support, disaster
management, deforestation, safe drinking water, forbidden
environmental practices, etc.

16. Advocacy & Awareness

 Advocacy and liaison with local authorities to get their
commitment and effective support towards previously neglected
community concerns.
 Thanks to the poverty maps, infrastructure works are carried out
in each community, fully funded by the local government.

 108 community poverty maps drawn and problems addressed
by the local govt.
 Approximately 199 million of BDT equivalent invested and 122
local infrastructures developed by local government
 The savings of 3390 beneficiaries raised 2 million BDT

Adult literacy is low, hence difficult to maintain Family
Income Expenditure Card.
More follow up meetings needed to conduct
advocacy with local govt to solve more issues such as
cover more families under social safety net program,
addressing more infrastructural barriers of the
community, etc.
