IDC defines an SDS solution as a storage system (hardware plus software) that delivers a full suite of persistent storage services via an autonomous software stack that can run on any industry-standard (rather than proprietary or custom) hardware platform (known as server-based storage or SBS).
These industry-standard platforms must be commodity off-the-shelf (COTS) products, including (but not limited to) x86-based servers running Windows, Linux, or other off-the-shelf operating system distributions like AIX or Solaris. Note that storage can be consumed by applications either as a service (the cloud model) or through traditional methods (accessed through storage protocols like SCSI or NFS). SDS solutions can support block, file, and/or object and be deployed as either disaggregated (shared network) storage or hyperconverged storage, depending on vendor implementation.
The worldwide software-defined compute (SDC) software market, previously named virtual machine (VM) and cloud system software. While customers are still using virtualization as default builds and expanding to cloud architectures, there is saturation and commoditization of virtualization. The shift to public cloud or hosted and remotely managed private clouds will have a negative impact on the SDC market. While these clouds extensively use hypervisors, containers, and cloud system software, a large percentage of this is unpaid or open source. They are also integrated with a larger software platform that delivers IaaS, platform as a service (PaaS), or SaaS, and this as-a-service revenue is not recognized in the SDC market. Again, a unit or shipment view will capture this usage, but a revenue view will not reflect these deployments.
Cloud system software is a potentially large area for new growth, but this market has been slow to develop because of product immaturity, the complexity of the software, and the transformation required for customers to successfully become a private cloud service provider. While there are signs of increasing adoption, it is still relatively nascent, and cloud system software won't become a significant revenue generator for several years. Cloud system software may also be increasingly delivered as a service (hosted, remotely managed, etc.) rather than licensed do-it-yourself software, which would not be reflected in the SDC market. Software containers are also a potential area for growth, but the commercial market is still nascent and won't generate significant revenue for several years, although it will likely grow faster than cloud system software because of its simpler technological nature and easier onramp.
Driven initially by the needs of web giants and large cloud service providers, SDN was devised to ensure that the network became more responsive to applications within the context of cloud computing. The SDN "stack" features layers of abstraction that provide southbound and northbound interfaces for enhanced policy-based management and programmability that extend all the way (up and down) from business-critical applications to the network infrastructure that supports and delivers them.
SD-WAN leverages hybrid WANs, but it includes a centralized, application-based policy controller; analytics for application and network visibility; a software overlay that abstracts underlying networks; and an optional SD-WAN forwarder (routing capability) that together provide intelligent path selection across WAN links, based on the application policies defined on the controller. SD-WAN solutions include products (hardware/software) and services (CSP, MSP, and cloud managed). All revenue projections are for in-use SD-WAN offerings.
