Our world is changing with more technology (instrumented), greater connectivity among all parts of the world (humans and machines) and therefore, more intelligent. This creates a set of new challenges and new opportunities for all of us. Full Script (based on Sam’s remarks to Council on Foreign Relations, Nov 6, 2008): First, our world is becoming instrumented: The transistor, invented 60 years ago, is the basic building block of the digital age. Now, consider a world in which there are a billion transistors per human, each one costing one ten-millionth of a cent. We’ll have that by 2010. There will likely be 4 billion mobile phone subscribers by the end of this year… and 30 billion Radio Frequency Identification tags produced globally within two years. Sensors are being embedded across entire ecosystems – supply-chains, healthcare networks, cities… even natural systems like rivers. Second, our world is becoming interconnected: Very soon there will be 2 billion people on the Internet. But in an instrumented world, systems and objects can now “speak” to one another, too. Think about the prospect of a trillion connected and intelligent things – cars, appliances, cameras, roadways, pipelines… even pharmaceuticals and livestock. The amount of information produced by the interaction of all those things will be unprecedented. Third, all things are becoming intelligent: New computing models can handle the proliferation of end-user devices, sensors and actuators and connect them with back-end systems. Combined with advanced analytics, those supercomputers can turn mountains of data into intelligence that can be translated into action, making our systems, processes and infrastructures more efficient, more productive and responsive – in a word, smarter. All of this progress poses new challenges and new opportunities for all of us (Transition to Next Slide) You want to optimize your business; especially in the current economic environment it’s essential that you look at operating differently if you want ensure success today and into the future. On a Smarter Planet, new business challenges and conditions (information overload, need for intelligence, more instrumented/interconnected world) have triggered a shift in spend towards optimization and a need for a new kind of intelligence… • Clients require analytic capabilities beyond sense and response to perceive, predict and perform real-time... • This shift will be as transformative as ERP and SCM in the way businesses work So this is the situation we find ourselves in… information is raging out of control, resulted in waste, inaccuracy and a high volume of missed opportunities. Enterprises are handling more information than ever before, but at the same they know they are not keeping pace. In effect, more information is available, and yet organizations are not optimizing the use of this information to understand past and current performance and plan for the future. Less of this information – and radically less of the information being created in real time -- is being effectively captured, managed, analyzed and made available to people who need it. The leading case in point is the current situation in global financial markets, where among myriad breakdowns, one vast gap was the ability to accurately assess risks. Fortunately, we are crossing a new threshold in our ability to manage pervasive information, analyze it to gain insight, predict risks and opportunities, and drive faster, smarter decisions and actions. Also, current economic times require corporations and governments to analyze new information faster and make timely decisions for achieving business goals! Full Script There are several factors driving the need for a new way of looking at information and the way we make decisions based on that information… Volume of Digital Data: The data explosion, of course, but also shifts in the nature of data. Once virtually all the information available to be &quot;processed&quot; was authored by someone. Now that kind of data is being overwhelmed by machine-generated data – spewing out of sensors, RFID, meters, microphones, surveillance systems, GPS systems and all manner of animate and inanimate objects. By 2010, the amount of digital information will grow to 988 Exabytes (equivalent to a stack of books from the sun to Pluto and back) Every day, 15 Petabytes of new information are being generated. This 8 times more than the information in all U.S. libraries The number of emails sent every day is estimated to be over 200 billion By 2010, the codified information base of the world is expected to double every 11 hours Variety of Information (diversity and heterogeneity): With this expansion of the sources of information comes large variance in the complexion of the available data -- very noisy, lots of errors -- and no time to cleanse it in a world of real-time decision making. 80% of new data growth is unstructured content, generated largely by email, with increasing contribution by documents, images, and video and audio 38% of email archiving decisions receive input from a C-level executive and 23% from legal/compliance professional The average car will have 100 million lines of code by 2010; the Airbus A380 alone contains over 1 billion lines of code Velocity of Decision Making: This is about optimizing the speed of insight generated as well as confidence that the decisions and actions taken will yield the best outcomes based on more proactive, planning around the management and use of information sources, and creating far more advanced predictive capabilities: Every week, the average information worker spends 14.5 hours reading & answering e-mail, 13.3 hours creating documents, 9.6 hours searching for information, 9.5 hours analyzing information For every 1,000 knowledge workers, $5.7 million is lost annually in time wasted reformatting information between applications. Not finding the right information costs an additional $5.3 million per year An Institute for Business Value Agile CFO Study in 2007 indicated that only 9% of senior finance executives believe they excel at gathering, interpreting & conveying information to senior management 42% of managers say they inadvertently use the wrong information at least once per week New Data New Information: All of this data is creating challenges – It also provides an excellent opportunity for driving new information and business insight! Companies are governments are looking at ways to sort through the data, understand and connect the key pieces of information and drive smarter business outcomes based by leveraging the information assets! Despite this abundance of information, too many businesses are not putting it to use to drive better decisions. 1 in 3 managers frequently make critical decisions without the information they need 3 in 4 business leaders say more predictive information would drive better decisions And over 19 hours each week is spent by knowledge workers searching for and understanding information. What does this mean? It means we can’t just keep doing what we’ve been doing… Additional statistic: 3 in 5 organizations don’t share critical information with partners and suppliers
Most organizations have invested heavily over many years in a variety of applications and systems to automate their business processes. The information from these applications is typically locked in silos or consolidated into a data warehouse for historical analysis and reporting by expert business analysts. These systems enable “macro-optimization;” that is, the analysis is designed to support major business decisions such as production planning, sales management, and capital investments. While these investments generate many benefits for the business, the majority of the daily decisions made by individuals throughout an organization are still based primarily on intuition and instinct. Indeed, most employees and departments don’t have access to run the customized analyses they need to support the specific real-time decisions that need to be made. The next generation of efficiencies can be achieved by providing precise, contextual analytics and insight at the point of impact – answering the question “is this a risk or opportunity and what is the best action that should be taken.” Doing so will drive “micro-optimization,” improving insight into customers, processes and business patterns to drive better real-time decisions and actions in every corner of the organization. Imagine if you could: … predict infection in premature newborns 24 hours earlier? … apply social relationships of customers to prevent churn? … adjust credit lines as transactions are occurring to account for risk fluctuations? … determine who to offer discounts at time of sale instead of offering to all? Organizations are starting to do so today, by accelerating their progression along an information-led transformation . These organizations are not only removing blind spots and optimizating their “macro” decisions (e.g., which new products to introduce to market) ) but also their “micro” decisions (e.g., how a call center representative can maximize a sale by factoring in new information and on-the-spot analytics to create the optimal offer ). Capturing this next generation of efficiencies comes from enabling all users – especially those close to the point of customer contact, or the point of greatest impact – to run analytics that are tailored to the current situation. The result is decisions made in real time that are much more closely aligned than historic approaches have allowed for. This is the critical distinguisher for an information-led transformation
As organizations proceed along their information-led transformation – in this example having started by establishing a strategy for their information through the IBM Information Agenda approach, they will reach a tipping point when they start to bring in real-time predictive analytics and the necessary information platform and infrastructure to support it. The result is a marked acceleration in their ability to optimize their business. The gap between their original path and this accelerated, steeper path represents the benefits they see from being able to make rapid, informed, confident decisions that are consistent across the organization - from a new kind of “ micro -efficiencies” that come from enabling all users to run real-time analytics, applying analytics as close as possible to the point of customer contact.
To realize these breakaway capabilities and accelerate the journey along an information-led transformation, organizations need to focus on three areas: Planning an information agenda: Organizations must have a strategic plan to align their information with their business objectives, including situations that may be unique to their industry or organization. Applying business analytics to optimize decisions: Organizations need to be able to make better, faster, more accurate decisions through planning, monitoring, reporting and predictive analysis of their information. Establishing a flexible information platform: Organizations need to have the necessary agility in their technology platform, infrastructure and common software services to support their needs at an optimal cost and to ensure that information can serve as a trusted asset that can be shared and securely accessed by all who need it, when and where they need it. While organizations can start anywhere – from taking a strategic view of the business, or tactically looking to expand on a data warehouse or master data management project, for example, best practices have shown that for an information-led transformation, all three elements (information agenda, analytics & optimization, and information platform) must be addressed. According to research from the IBM Institute for Business Value, industry out-performers are 8 times more likely to pursue information-led transformation at an enterprise level than industry under-performers. By undertaking these three areas, organizations will reach a tipping point in their ability to optimize their business, accelerating along their information-led transformation by applying predictive analytics at the point of impact, customized to each specific situation. They will discover a new kind of intelligence and capture new efficiencies that result from making actionable insight available at the point of greatest impact. Let’s look at each of these three areas in turn, starting with the importance of planning an information agenda.

Full Script Customer Need: LVMH Perfumes & Cosmetics realized that in order to remain competitive and tap on the growing consumer market in Asia Pacific, they needed to understand the drivers behind its customers’ buying behavior and their preferences. Customer Loyalty programs are the key to the success of any luxury brand. A well planned and executed loyalty plan aims to help attract customers and retain existing customers. Very often, the sales and profitability of a luxury brand is directly proportional to the success of the loyalty plan. CRM deployment to address the need LVMH initially started with an application based approach and invested in a CRM system. Although it did provide some much needed functionality it did not provide competitive advantage. The CRM system could not adequately meet brands’ needs for fast, simple yet comprehensive reports and analyses. The system, as with most applications, was built to serve one specific purpose. JB Hunt is one of the largest transportation logistics companies in North America. A huge percentage of the goods that drive commerce in North America are transported on trucks. However, the logistics around delivery have not always been well coordinated. Trucks can arrive when the receiving client is not prepared to unload and take delivery resulting in inefficiencies in time, cost and fuel. In 2000, J.B. Hunt made an initial investment in IBM ECM (Enterprise Content Management) to address these problems. Based on the success of the initial application, they applied their experience and deployed additional IBM ECM capabilities to address more complex business challenges, attacking three problematic areas - billing, dray carrier management and driver delay management. Billing : The existing billing process was complex, labor intensive and time consuming. Data was being entered manually. Customer service agreements required invoices to be generated using different rules for each customer, yet there were no means to centralize and coordinate the numerous billing rules. It became increasingly difficult to produce timely and accurate billing at month’s end, requiring additional customer service efforts. Billing issues threatened to affect J.B. Hunt’s customer service reputation and cash flow. Dray Carrier Management: J.B. Hunt often relies on independent carriers to transport rail containers to the nearest railway terminal. Coordinating shipment assignments and payments for independent carriers - known as dray carrier management - was primarily a manual processes, dependant upon knowledgeable staff to coordinate hundreds of independent carriers transporting thousands of containers annually. J.B. Hunt realized ECM could be leveraged to significantly improve dray carrier management by replacing manual work with automated processes. Driver Delays: Upon pickup or delivery, carriers allot a certain amount of wait time – typically one to three hours, depending on the service level contract. When a driver is detained longer than the allotted time, charges accrue. Tracking and reporting “detention” time was primarily the responsibility of a large administrative staff. In reality, accurate tracking and reporting was difficult to obtain. When delays were reported, the process of accurately applying these customer charges required extensive searches through data-intensive mainframe screens, e-mail documents and printed customer agreements. Legitimate charges were sometimes missed due to interpretation errors, time constraints and volumes of information requiring manual processing. Solutions J.B. Hunt initially applied IBM ECM capture, imaging and business process management capabilities to deal effectively with the high volumes of documents – bills of lading, delivery receipts, claims documents, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and driver logs – associated with customer transactions. Hunt staff and transferred these responsibilities to the individual carriers who could remotely access the web-based portal, accept or reject pickup or delivery assignments and submit paperwork required for payment. Business Challenge Background Customer is one of the largest insurance companies with worldwide operations. The Chairman of the Board of this large US Insurance company had a problem. Not only did the company have a very large email system, as you can see here. Also, the company had been ordered to preserve emails related to complaints about a specific insurance product. The judge’s hold order was not communicated to the IT department, and some of the email was deleted. The judge found the company in violation of the record hold order, and fined the Chairman, personally, $1 million. Immediately, the IT Department had a critical Compliance project to complete. On the one hand, whenever we deal with the financial markets, of course, this is very, very fast paced. So there, we need real-time information on our trading positions, and more and more, we also need real-time information on the risks that we are running and the limits that we set. And then we, more and more, get not real-time, but near-time requirements also in our core processing areas in retail and corporate banking, where, for example, we now have the new tax law change in Germany, where we have to withhold tax at the same point in time when we actually book the securities transaction, we have to book the taxes as well. Bank of Spain The Bank of Spain has implemented their AML solution over the last 6 months to improve the detection of money laundering activities and to better assign their staff to investigations. The central bank receives information relating to money transfers from many different organisations, such as international payments details from banks, gambling wins from casinos, property transactions from notary publics. The data arrives in different formats and the solution implemented analyses individual or related payments to discover whether they might be associated with money laundering, perhaps because of a relationship to known criminals or people on watch-lists, or perhaps due to the pattern of payments. The complexity of the task is money launderers seek to hide their identities and their activities. By comparing name and birthplace against a census of over 1 billion names, the solution is able to detect possible false identities. It also allows the users to discover whether similar names may in fact be the same person - regardless of where they come from in the world. And performing advanced analytics on all the data that the bank receives, the solution can identify money laundering activities involving groups of people that it would have taken manual systems months or years to discover. Technically the solution uses InfoSphere Information Server to read-in the source data, to eliminate duplicates and to normalize the data (Information Analyzer, DataStage and QualityStage). The normalized data is passed to Global Name Recognition (GNR) for analysis and matching of international names (Chinese, Arab, Russian etc) before it is loaded into EAS where it is analysed to detect transfer patterns that could indicate criminal activities.

This project is part of a larger enterprise wide Performance Management strategy. There are 10 BI – PM projects currently being deployed at SNCFincluding this one. Business Challenge Background SNCF ( Société Nationale des Chemins de fer français ) (French National Railway) SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer français) (French National Railway) is a French public enterprise. Its functions include operation of rail services for passengers and freight, and maintenance and signalling of rail infrastructure owned by RFF (Réseau Ferré de France). It employs about 180,000 people. The rail network consists of about 32,000 km of track, of which 1,800 km is high-speed line and 14,500 km electrified . About 14,000 trains are operated daily. The chairman of SNCF is Guillaume Pépy . Business Challenge 2 major business challenges SNCF manages hundreds on investment decisions each year. The 100 + program directors submit their projects to Corporate Headquarters - in charge of the strategy and budget allocation- for validation and prioritization of projects. Projects were submitted via spreadsheets and SNCF managed requests on an ad hoc basis. There was no consistent approach to information sharing, this made any investment decisions a cumbersome and lengthy process. Financial lifecycle of approved projects : SNCF had a legacy home grown financial system to manage the budgets for each project throughout the investment lifecycle. They had multiple ERPs( purchasing, accounting, infrastructure, vendors ) all hard wired together. This application environment made it difficult for SNCF to efficiently manage the budgets allocated to projects. Solution: In the 1 st phase of the project SNCF consolidated all their data sources into a single ERP running on Peoplesoft. They implemented dashboards built on Cognos8 BI to track the budget, amounting to several million euros, on each infrastructure project and during its entire lifecycle. For project submission and approval SNCF implemented Cognos 8 Planning. Solution Details: Cognos 8 BI , Cognos 8 Planning , Infosphere, Cognos services. Business Benefits Thanks to their New Intelligence solution SNCF has a streamlined and consistent investment decision making process. We have discussed how transforming one’s business through information involves thinking about not only the macro-optimization made possible by existing solutions, but also the additional micro-optimization that comes by optimizing decisions and transactions at every contact point without requiring that all users be analytical experts. On the left we see the situation that is typically in place today. Organizations are using large historical data stores with modeling & analysis done by experts, pushing that analysis out to the end users. While the macro-optimization made possible by these solutions are important, and have led to large productivity and efficiency gains by companies, there is still more opportunity that can be captured. Are we missing opportunities? Questions like these pervade businesses today—in any industry, in any geographic location, in any company large or small. However, at Irish Life & Permanent, the largest provider of personal financial services (life insurance and pensions) in the Irish market, obtaining the answers to such questions is becoming easier thanks to IBM Information Management. Irish Life & Permanent was formed from the merger of Irish Life plc, Ireland’s largest life assurance company, and Irish Permanent plc, a leading retail bank and the leading provider of residential mortgages in Ireland. Customers typically required different PIN numbers for each policy, making logging on to the Web site to obtain account information a difficult and time-consuming process. Creating a single source of truth – 360 degree view of customer relationship.. To achieve its goals, Irish Life & Permanent launched a master data management initiative that would integrate information in real-time and provide a single, complete and accurate record of customers across the company. Leveraging service oriented architecture (SOA) principles, the company hoped to integrate customer information into a single hub that could be accessed by any business process or service. As a first step, Irish Life & Permanent executives created a Client Data Council through which key business staff across all divisions worked together to define where and how data could be standardized and connected across systems After a thorough evaluation of several technologies and recommendations from industry consultants, the company selected IBM InfoSphere MDM Server and Information Server. Using a phased approach, Irish Life & Permanent first loaded and standardized client data from its insurance division into the central customer hub. Recently, they have added data from its banking division. Through this process, staff can quickly identify and resolve common data errors. Irish Life has standardized customer names and address data using InfoSphere products. They can identify, match and merge duplicate records to create a single view of their customers. Irish Life has also developed the right data governance policies to validate information when it is first captured. Improving customer service and satisfaction With information integrated in real-time, Irish Life & Permanent expects to improve customer satisfaction, increase sales and reduce costs. For example, when customers call the bank to update their contact information, the new information is automatically reflected across the organization. This helps eliminate the need for customers to call different divisions and the chance that policy information is sent to the wrong address. It also helps improve compliance with internal and external governance requirements. Additionally, customers will soon be able to log on to the company’s Web site to review all their holdings—from their life insurance policies to their pensions to their bank and credit card accounts —with a single PIN number. Company executives expect that this not only will strengthen customer satisfaction, but also will increase the use of self-service options to help reduce costs. Gaining greater insight into customer needs Customer service staff will also be able to access a full profile of each customer, including contact history.
