Cloud as an Enabler for Business Innovation Keith Stewart, Tivoli Technical Leader North East Europe, IBM Software Group
Cloud Computing – NIST* Definition Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. but ….. this is a technology centric definition (*National Institute of Standards and Technology)

IBM recognizes cloud adoption differs by client needs Cloud Enabled Data Center Cloud Platform Services Cloud Service Provider Business Solutions on Cloud Integrating cloud service management, automation, provisioning, self service , and reducing cost while maintaining service quality Improving the delivery of a integrated infrastructure that helps clients accelerate service release cycle, and automated deployment Designing and delivering advanced, reliable, highly secure and scalable platform for creating, managing, and monetizing cloud services Capabilities provided to clients for using a provider’s applications running on a cloud infrastructure integrated and managed through my on-premise command center
Infrastructure Teams Line of Business Teams Operations Teams How can I accelerate my application release cycle and optimize its deployment ? How can I improve my resource utilization and reduce cost ? How can I scale my infrastructure to support scaled, accelerated deployment while reducing operational costs ? How can I improve the performance of my infrastructure, gain insight into my operations and deliver service assurance ? How can I ensure continued business operations, deliver resiliency and security ? What are IBM clients and partners asking for?

Lockheed Martin SOA Competency Center Cloud Business Description Lockheed-Martin is global information technology and defense firm principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems for Defense, Civilian and Intelligence customers. Client Objectives Agility to meet new customer requirements, Faster time to market with R&D innovations, Competitive advantage through emerging technology insertion Business Problem Lockheed-Martin required an approach to rapidly enable it's Research & Development teams with access new technologies, tools, techniques and existing corporate IP involved in the innovation of new space and ground systems. Solution Approach Lockheed-Martin established a private cloud infrastructure, suitable for development, experimentation, and testing of command and control (C2), advanced intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), secure cyber, and logistics solutions. Dubbed the SOA Competency Center, it leverages deep-client domain knowledge and technology expertise, applying them in a consistent SOA engineering approach all delivered from the Cloud. Lockheed-Martin uses IBM's Service Delivery Manager (ISDM) to provide on-demand access to Corporate IP and development environments via a self-service Private Cloud. This has made the Competency Center more agile; reducing provisioning time from 4 days to hours and sometimes minutes, more dependable; minimizing environment installation errors through automation, and better governed; tracking demand by line of business using ISDM's built-in consumption-based accounting metrics collection

Editor's Notes

  1. Progression toward transformation starts with optimizing existing assets/processes and leverages best in class technology at each transition Each step balances improvements in efficiency and effectiveness and can be measured by business returns. An organization can move to cloud systematically taking one step at a time, or they can move right to a public OR private cloud deployment if it aligns best with their strategic vision for the business. As your clients’ IT partner, you are in a unique position to help them understand their options and lay out a roadmap to cloud. Readying the infrastructure requires the implementation of a Dynamic Infrastructure: consolidate your servers and storage, implement virtualization technologies to increase utilization, standardizing processes for operational efficiency, automating procedures for a more flexible delivery and enabling clients for self-service. Then you identify common workloads and set up shared resources, and finally, to achieve a true cloud-enabled environment, clients must be able to provision the workloads in a dynamic fashion.
