“GENERATION OF COMPUTERS”
“Computer generations are based on when major
technological changes in computers occurred, like the use
of vacuum tubes, transistors, and the microprocessor. As
of 2020, there are five generations of the computer..”

“FIRST GENERATION
Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)”
The first computer systems used vacuum tubes for
circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and were
often enormous, taking up entire rooms. These
computers were very expensive to operate and in
addition to using a great deal of electricity, the first
computers generated a lot of heat, which was often the
cause of malfunctions.

“FIRST GENERATION
Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)”
First generation computers relied on machine
language, the lowest-level programming language
understood by computers, to perform operations, and
they could only solve one problem at a time. It would
take operators days or even weeks to set-up a new
problem. Input was based on punched cards and paper
tape, and output was displayed on printouts..

“FIRST GENERATION
Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)”
The UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples
of first-generation computing devices. The
UNIVAC was the first commercial computer
delivered to a business client, the U.S. Census
Bureau in 1951.

“SECOND GENERATION
Transistors (1956-1963)”
The world would see transistors replace vacuum tubes
in the second generation of computers. The transistor
was invented at Bell Labs in 1947 but did not see
widespread use in computers until the late 1950s.
Computer Diary
Huzafa Tuition Centre
A place to learn life…
“SECOND GENERATION
Transistors (1956-1963)”
The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube,
allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper,
more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first-
generation predecessors.
Computer Diary

A place to learn life…
“SECOND GENERATION
Transistors (1956-1963)”
Though the transistor still generated a great deal of
heat that subjected the computer to damage, it was a
vast improvement over the vacuum tube. Second-
generation computers still relied on punched cards for
input and printouts for output.
Computer Diary
Huzafa Tuition Centre
A place to learn life…
“SECOND GENERATION
Transistors (1956-1963)”
In this generation, magnetic cores were used as the
primary memory and magnetic tape and magnetic disks
as secondary storage devices.
In this generation, assembly language and high-level
programming languages like FORTRAN, COBOL
were used. The computers used batch processing and
multiprogramming operating system.

A place to learn life…
“THIRD GENERATION
Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)”
The development of the integrated circuit was the
hallmark of the third generation of computers.
Transistors were miniaturized and placed
on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which
drastically increased the speed and efficiency of
computers.
Computer Diary
Huzafa Tuition Centre
A place to learn life…
“THIRD GENERATION
Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)”
Instead of punched cards and printouts, users interacted
with third generation computers
through keyboards and monitors and interfaced with
an operating system, which allowed the device to run
many different applications at one time with a central
program that monitored the memory.
Computer Diary
Huzafa Tuition Centre
A place to learn life…
“THIRD GENERATION
Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)”
Computers for the first time became accessible to a
mass audience because they were smaller and cheaper
than their predecessors. High-level languages
(FORTRAN-II TO IV, COBOL, PASCAL PL/1,
BASIC, ALGOL-68 etc.) were used during this
generation.

The main features of third generation are −
IC used
More reliable in comparison to previous
two generations
Smaller size
Generated less heat
Faster
Lesser maintenance
Costly
AC required
Consumed lesser electricity
Supported high-level language
Some computers of
this generation were −

“FOURTH GENERATION
Microprocessors (1971-Present)”
The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of
computers, as thousands of integrated circuits were
built onto a single silicon chip.

“FOURTH GENERATION
Microprocessors (1971-Present)”
What in the first generation filled an entire room could
now fit in the palm of the hand. The Intel 4004 chip,
developed in 1971, located all the components of the
computer—from the central processing unit and
memory to input/output controls—on a single chip.
Computer Diary

A place to learn life…
“FOURTH GENERATION
Microprocessors (1971-Present)”
As these small computers became more powerful, they
could be linked together to form networks, which
eventually led to the development of the Internet.
Fourth generation computers also saw the development
of GUIs, the mouse and handheld devices. All the
high-level languages like C, C++, DBASE etc., were
used in this generation.

  • 4. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “FIRST GENERATION” Computer Diary
  • 5. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “FIRST GENERATION Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)” The first computer systems used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and were often enormous, taking up entire rooms. These computers were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, the first computers generated a lot of heat, which was often the cause of malfunctions. Computer Diary
  • 6. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “FIRST GENERATION Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)” First generation computers relied on machine language, the lowest-level programming language understood by computers, to perform operations, and they could only solve one problem at a time. It would take operators days or even weeks to set-up a new problem. Input was based on punched cards and paper tape, and output was displayed on printouts.. Computer Diary
  • 7. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “FIRST GENERATION Vacuum Tubes (1940-1956)” The UNIVAC and ENIAC computers are examples of first-generation computing devices. The UNIVAC was the first commercial computer delivered to a business client, the U.S. Census Bureau in 1951. Computer Diary

  • 9. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION” Computer Diary
  • 10. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION Transistors (1956-1963)” The world would see transistors replace vacuum tubes in the second generation of computers. The transistor was invented at Bell Labs in 1947 but did not see widespread use in computers until the late 1950s. Computer Diary
  • 11. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION Transistors (1956-1963)” The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first- generation predecessors. Computer Diary
  • 12. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION Transistors (1956-1963)” Though the transistor still generated a great deal of heat that subjected the computer to damage, it was a vast improvement over the vacuum tube. Second- generation computers still relied on punched cards for input and printouts for output. Computer Diary
  • 13. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION Transistors (1956-1963)” In this generation, magnetic cores were used as the primary memory and magnetic tape and magnetic disks as secondary storage devices. In this generation, assembly language and high-level programming languages like FORTRAN, COBOL were used. The computers used batch processing and multiprogramming operating system. Computer Diary
  • 14. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “SECOND GENERATION Transistors (1956-1963)” Computer Diary The main features of second generation are….. Use of transistors Smaller size as compared to first generation computers Generated less heat as compared to first generation computers Faster than first generation computers Still very costly AC required Supported machine and assembly languages Some computers of this generation were − IBM 1620 IBM 7094 CDC 1604 CDC 3600 UNIVAC 1108
  • 15. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “THIRD GENERATION” Computer Diary
  • 16. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “THIRD GENERATION Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)” The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of the third generation of computers. Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers. Computer Diary
  • 17. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “THIRD GENERATION Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)” Instead of punched cards and printouts, users interacted with third generation computers through keyboards and monitors and interfaced with an operating system, which allowed the device to run many different applications at one time with a central program that monitored the memory. Computer Diary
  • 18. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “THIRD GENERATION Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)” Computers for the first time became accessible to a mass audience because they were smaller and cheaper than their predecessors. High-level languages (FORTRAN-II TO IV, COBOL, PASCAL PL/1, BASIC, ALGOL-68 etc.) were used during this generation. Computer Diary
  • 19. Huzafa Tuition Centre A place to learn life… “THIRD GENERATION Integrated Circuits (1964-1971)” Computer Diary The main features of third generation are − IC used More reliable in comparison to previous two generations Smaller size Generated less heat Faster Lesser maintenance Costly AC required Consumed lesser electricity Supported high-level language Some computers of this generation were − IBM-360 series Honeywell-6000 series PDP (Personal Data Processor) IBM-370/168 TDC-316
