3. National Voices
• The coalition of charities that stands for:
• People being in control of their health and
care
• An integral role for the third sector
4. Why do we need people powered
approaches?
• Health creation is powerful…
• Unfortunately it doesn’t eliminate
sickness, disease, disability, frailty, and
death! Millions of people live with long
term conditions.
• But “asset-based” – or people powered -
approaches make a big difference
• What is your role?
5. Questions for participants
• How familiar are you with people
powered approaches to health &
wellbeing?
• How important do you think they are?
• How important is it for you to embrace
these approaches in your own work?
• How much difference can you make by
doing so?
6. The basis in law
• Health & Social Care Act 2012 – duties to
involve patients & carers in care & treatment
decisions – and public involvement in
commissioning
• Care Act 2014 – duty to promote individual’s
wellbeing, with guidance on care planning and
personal budgets etc
• Social Value Act 2012 – duty on
commissioners to consider wider social,
economic, environmental benefits
7. The basis in evidence
Partnering and enabling people delivers better results.
Evidence-backed approaches for improving outcomes
include:
• Shared decision making
• Personalised care and support planning
• Education for self management
• Peer support
• Health coaching
• Group activities
• Asset based approaches in a health context

9. Making it real: whole system
responses
• Act & invest in line with the evidence of what
works – and the law. Make it a priority
• Target the things that matter to people,
measure what matters, hold people to account
for it
• Pay for outcomes that matter to people
• Train the workforce in asset-based approaches
12. What can I do? Values & mind-set
• Wanting to improve things
• Valuing what matters to people
• Focusing on those with the most to gain (worst
outcomes, least access etc)
• Valuing what people can contribute
• Being humble (“I don’t want a service, I want a
life!”)
• It’s about social leadership
13. What can I do? Some practices
• Having better conversations
• Collaborating
• Setting shared goals and reviewing progress
• Forming networks – team up with like minded
colleagues
• Making friends with your third sector (and 1st &
2nd)
