Data Visualization – Trend Overview
5 Data Visualization: A 2015 HorizonWatch Trend Report27 Jan 2015
Drivers
 Huge growth in Big Data…both structured and unstructured
 Business Leaders need the insights presented in simple
visual formats that aid and speed decision making
 Advanced Data Visualization applications and capabilities
with rich graphics and interactivity
Challenges
 Demand for easy to use / self-service tools and dashboards
 Implementing and embedding Analytic and Visualization
tools into daily activities and onto different mobile platforms
 New processes = New skills required (e.g. storyteller)
 Managing Data Quality
Implications
 The ability to present insights effectively can have a
significant impact on decision making
 Requirements for future visualization tools
 Very easy-to-use self service tools designed for
business users.
 Full integration with big data / analytics platforms
 Real time capability
 Available on mobile devices
 Embedded predictive and cognitive capability
“The key to effective analysis
of big data is the integration
of visualization into analytics
tools so that all kinds of
users can interpret big data
from a wide range of
sources—clickstreams,
social media, log files,
videos and more.” IBM
“Organizations with real-time
visualization are able to obtain
critical information within the
decision window 78% of the time,
or 22% more often than
organizations without real-time
visualization.” Aberdeen

Data Visualization Trends for 2015
1. Interest Grows: In 2015, we will see increased
interest by LOB for all types of data discovery and
visualization tool information, demos, and case
studies
2. Spending Grows Too!: Many enterprises are
further along the purchase cycle. Expect continued
spending growth in data discovery, exploration, and
visualization tools
3. Analytics Integration: For mature users, expect a
movement towards advanced big data & analytic
platforms that have embedded visualization
capabilities, rather than a separate visualization tool
on the backend
4. Real Time: Increasingly, execs are interested in
real-time analytics and visualizations. Expect
increased interest in this area in 2015.
5. Self Service: Driven by consumerization, self-
service is a key trend as users want to be able to
manipulate the data themselves, simulating
expected changes in data in real-time to see impact

Data Visualization Trends for 2015
6. Mobile: Users will expect to have data discovery and
visualization capabilities on they BYOD tablets and
smartphones. And the expectation will be that all enterprise
apps will have visualization capabilities embedded as part
of the mobile application.
7. Cognitive: An emerging trend where users will expect that
the applications to interact with them and learn how that
user likes to discover, analyze, and visualize information.
8. 3D Visualizations: Used in product development for
years, 3D is being increasing applied to business analytics
as a way of helping decision makers understand insights in
big data.
9. Story Telling: Decision makers want the data to tell a
story that will help them arrive at a decision. Visualization
tools will increasingly support that process and some will
even allow for video output as part of that capability.
10. Broader Tool Set: Advanced visualization tools are still an
emerging product area. Expect vendors to announce new
versions with a broader set of smarter data integration
tools, tighter integration with analytics platforms, better
insight discovery tools and improved visualizations.
8 Data Visualization: A 2015 HorizonWatch Trend Report27 Jan 2015
“Widespread adoption of
mobile technology and
social computing has
driven interest in
visualization capabilities
and real-time analytics.”
Forrester
“Good data visualization
practices help not just to
solve issues but also to
pose new questions,
encouraging the discovery
and research process to
go beyond common tasks
to explore new patterns
and trends that can
potentially boost business
efficiency.” TEC

Data Visualization Trends for 2015
11. Hall of Fame: Vendors and media websites
highlight best of breed visualization examples to
help educate and sell.
12. Implementation Challenges: The main
challenges of skills, culture, and data quality will
impede the full rollout of data discovery and
visualization tools
13. MS Excel 2013: Many individuals and small
business users will discover that MS Excel offers
much of what they need without the need.
14. Specialized Vendors: Focused vendors like
Tableau, Qlik, and Spotfire continue to innovate
and grow at a rapid pace as decision makers
demand improved data visualization capability.
15. Large Vendors: Larger IT vendors will increase
investments in this market to complement Big
Data and Analytic capabilities. They will focus on
integrating visualization and data discovery
capabilities into their analytic platforms.

“Identifying patterns, anticipating outcomes and proactively optimizing a response will
be the basis for competition in the future. In the next 10 years, the companies that don't
have analytics deeply embedded in their business model will most likely cease to exist”
Gartner
“The jury is still out as to whether most

repositories.” Gartner
“On average, those using data
visualization tools report it would take
an average of nine hours longer to
see patterns, trends, and correlations
in their company’s data without data
visualization.” SAP

new processes and skills will be required
22 Data Visualization: A 2015 HorizonWatch Trend Report27 Jan 2015
“The challenge is that if management
teams do not consciously build in great
visualizations, their organizations will
waste an inordinate amount of time sifting
through the river of bits, and not get the
effective insights they need” HBR
“So what should CIOs do? Lead by
example. Constantly and critically look at
how information is being presented within
the organization and ask themselves and
others "Is this the best way to represent
this data?” Forrester
“As people begin to experiment with the creation and interpretation of visualizations and
including them in presentations, a not-so-apparent shift will take place in the background
where the traditional ‘analyst’ role slowly morphs to give way to a new breed — the
storytellers — who will be more strategic and consultative in nature and not data-waiters,
statisticians or always comfortable with extreme analytics.” Ruben Alcaraz

Data Visualization Trends for 2015 1. Interest Grows: In 2015, we will see increased interest by LOB for all types of data discovery and visualization tool information, demos, and case studies 2. Spending Grows Too!: Many enterprises are further along the purchase cycle. Expect continued spending growth in data discovery, exploration, and visualization tools 3. Analytics Integration: For mature users, expect a movement towards advanced big data & analytic platforms that have embedded visualization capabilities, rather than a separate visualization tool on the backend 4. Real Time: Increasingly, execs are interested in real-time analytics and visualizations. Expect increased interest in this area in 2015. 5. Self Service: Driven by consumerization, self- service is a key trend as users want to be able to manipulate the data themselves, simulating expected changes in data in real-time to see impact 7 Data Visualization: A 2015 HorizonWatch Trend Report27 Jan 2015 HBR: Webinar: The Visual Organization “Adopters of interactive visualization achieve faster decision making, greater data access, and stronger user engagement, in addition to desirable results in several other metrics.” Aberdeen

As Advanced Data Visualization capability becomes more common, new processes and skills will be required 22 Data Visualization: A 2015 HorizonWatch Trend Report27 Jan 2015 “The challenge is that if management teams do not consciously build in great visualizations, their organizations will waste an inordinate amount of time sifting through the river of bits, and not get the effective insights they need” HBR “So what should CIOs do? Lead by example. Constantly and critically look at how information is being presented within the organization and ask themselves and others "Is this the best way to represent this data?” Forrester “As people begin to experiment with the creation and interpretation of visualizations and including them in presentations, a not-so-apparent shift will take place in the background where the traditional ‘analyst’ role slowly morphs to give way to a new breed — the storytellers — who will be more strategic and consultative in nature and not data-waiters, statisticians or always comfortable with extreme analytics.” Ruben Alcaraz Resources  Bill Shander Data Visualization Fundamentals  MIT Open Courseware: How to Process, Analyze, and Visualize Data  Fell in Love with Data How to Become a Data Visualization Expert: A Recipe  Flowing Data Tutorials, Books and Guides  Visualising Data Essential Collection of Visualization Resources
